Unarmored Vehicles
« on: 25-05-2009, 01:05:01 »
Currently I feel that soft-skinned vehicles like the Opel Blitz are too resistant to small-arms fire, in particular from SMGs. It takes about 50 rounds point blank to the cabin or engine compartment from either the MP40 or Thompson to kill a Opel Blitz-a volume that's practically impossible to get off even with the barrel-fed Thompson given the trucks' speed.

I can't really claim this isn't realistic since I have no idea how much punishment the engines on those trucks could take, but I've worked with miniature aircraft engines and while they're not fragile, I can't imagine them standing up to getting shot 40+ times, and the engine is probably to toughest component of the truck. Plus, softening up trucks would promote people to use halftracks, which are currently pretty underutilized, and stop people from trying to blitz through enemy lines in supply trucks.

Hmm, I thought about something similar these days.
I know you'll crush it, but...

We had that thing with tanks going woozah when below 10% health or something.

Wouldn't it be possible that with health <20% or similar trucks just stop? And make them a tiny bit more vulnerable at the part where the motor is packed.

the real problem is, that all passengers die as soon as the truck blows up. If you had a chance to leave the disabled vehicle it would be possible to crank down the health a bit.

See, that's what would make it cool for the motor the die at some point. With some awful sound at best.

If you could disable the truck engine like you disabled the tracks on tanks, it would stop and the soldiers could bail in time. Would also prevent trucks whose engine is already burning from being driven around. Looks a bit silly.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom

Can you make it so certain parts don't stop bullets, and let them pass through and hit the passengers?

Also, could you make the engine compartment more vulnerable to damage, perhaps the way you make different parts of a tank take different damage?

If you did both of these, and made the vehicle take 1/4 the damage from collisions it does right now, you could set the engine to fail at 75% health, and make side panels take very little damage from bullets, but let them pass through, you would have a very realistic vehicle.

Now why should a sub machine gun be able to stop a truck?
If you're lucky perhaps. Most effective is to take out the driver with a well aimed shot. Works 75% of the time.

Hell in short time I would think a truck in desert heat would stop via a couple 9mm rounds.  Hell I have killed a modern car dead with one lame ass .30 carbine shot.  And that was from the rear and into the engine compartment.

AT Rifles and Normalrifles penetrate the the complete hull of a truck. it simple flies throu it. so no damage. if you hit a soldier he will die. the Truck will not or slow die from it. we did that on purpose

Not to be a pest but...Did you guys rig AT rounds from the anti-tank guns to go through the canvas on the trucks as well?  I thought I noticed that when trying to wack a truck before..That could have been my lack of skill or BF2 hitboxes....But if you guys coded it that way...BRAVO!

The canvas on the trucks has no collisionfor soldiers or ammo so people, bullets, grenades, rockets and all go through it., atleast I think that's the case.

I always aim for the motor block, otherwise the shots seem to do no damage.

You've had situations where you've shot the driver dead and that doesn't stop the truck?
