Total Solar Eclipse in America Today!!
« on: 21-08-2017, 17:08:43 »
The last one was in 1979, so this is a big event. Lots of Europeans have made the trip to Hopkinsville, Ky to see the 2:40 min Total Eclipse. Im about 2 hrs away from there, but in my area it will be 98.7%, so it should be spectacular!!

Ill post some pics later

The next North American Total Eclipse won't be until 2024.

The August event will go down as the first total solar eclipse whose path of totality stays completely in the United States since 1776 during the Revolutionary War.

It's getting very dark here in Maryland, like a strong thunderstorm is coming. Quite dark actually. Never experienced an eclipse before.
You are bathing in misery and hope, waiting for someone to come and pull the plug.

I just watched it from Charleston, SC. The most incredible sight I've ever seen by far. Everything gets dark and there's a ring of fire in the sky for 2 min.

A few weeks ago I watched it in Ukraine.
That other thread failed miserably and if you try to spam or flame here, I will break your arms.

Same here. I remember stores selling those cheap protection goggles made from cardboard. People were buying them like crazy and it was nearly impossible finding some as they were sold out everywhere.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

We drove up to Nebraska to see the total eclipse.  I have seen partial eclipses, and believe me when I tell you, a total eclipse is a totally different beast, and photographs of it simply do not give it justice.  It is like a completely new astronomical body is in this sky, this black circle surrounded by a huge, wafting, ethereal blue-grey mist.  It is really next to impossible to describe- you have to see it yourself.

I was 5 years then, I don't remember that much of it, sadly. But for the goggles, you're better off going to a store and buy welder's goggles. Same effect, but better and more comfortable. And those cardboard goggles indeed sell out, even at ridiculous prices.

What I remember most was the sudden cold it caused, and that creepy icy wind suddenly when the eclipse is full. I'm really tempted to travel in the next decade just to see it happen again.

This is what i saw. Not Total, but still amazing!!

Really nice picture  :)

Nature phenomenon at its best.

My real encounter was back in 1988, the eclipse only lasted a few minutes but I was at home, still a little boy. My auntie was laundering our clothes at the back alley garden. Suddenly, the bright sunny afternoon turned dark with a weird lighting, kind of overcast sky at sunset. I was told not to stare at the corona directly, so I never looked at it.

My cousins used a welders mask to look at the sun, since they couldn´t find any cardboard goggles anywhere. I remember my dad doing a little road trip to find two last pairs at an optometrists store.

It was quite a spectacle and I´m glad there was another one that people could witness. The next one that can be seen is in nine years, so quite some time to wait...
