Getting a new pc..on a budget..

My PC decided to go kamikaze last week. At first it was some blue screens of death wich i ignored.. then my D harddrive failed. And yesterday i got the call that infact my entire pc is toast. hdd, motherboard and power supply are a total loss. The GPU is working but has some damage aswel.

My bud luckily knows a thing or 2 about PCS, and he was able to get, quite cheap, a proper MSI motherboard, powersupply, coolingmaster fans and a 1 TB HD.

I only need RAM, GPU and a processor..but thats where i have a problem= i only have 510 euros to spend.
I need games like WOWS, PS2 and MWO to run propely. But my friend is nagging i should get 16gb of ram. But issent the maximum supported atm 8 gb?

To save costs, i also wanna keep windows 7.
But i think 510 euro is not enough to get a decent gpu, processor and ram. Wich is why i am thinking of going AMD this time.

I have a fat company profit bonus inbound, but thats due for another month.

Is it better to save cash and wait longer? My m8 says yes. Kinda needing a second opinion here (sorry for typos, posting on forums with a phone is difficult)

I'd recommend waiting until you have enough for atleast RX480 (8Gb) or GeForce 1060 (6Gb) and decent cpu, if that's reasonably possible. Perhaps go for 8Gb RAM and then you could always double that if you have some cash on hand.

500€ might be near enough for cpu and gpu already, but falls short ram part. That's what I remember after recently upgrading my pc and I'd suspect you can get parts for cheaper than me in Finland though.

Edit: Those gpu's are what I feel as cheapest gpu's out there, still worth of buying now.

Parts will be ordered via internet. And my bud will assemble the pc free of charge, as he owes me a favour(got his bmw from a ditch)

He said he has several options. Including one wich has a very good CPU and RAM but mediocre GPU. So basically as a temporary GPU till i get proper cash. He will then buy the other GPU for use in another PC.

I have begun selling army junk to get more cash in. Because i found out, that indeed, 510 euro barely gets me anything. Now i feel like a retard for buying a PS4 2 weeks ago...

My eyes have returned back to Nvidia. And especially the GTX 1070. Most likely i will go for this one.
As for CPU, well i always took AMD. But the intel I7 looks neat. Yet it is more expensive.

I'm no expert in this, but I heard the best way to do stuff like this, is waiting for Intel and Nvidia to release their new series, and then buy the week after the release second hand the previous gen. Apparently, quite a few people buy the newest stuff each time and sell the stuff they bought a year ago. The supply shock in those circumstances can let you get real bargains from what i've heard.

I wouldn't worry too much about having something that's a year old, I'm on a 5 year old laptop with i7-3610QM (doubled to 8 cores and with automated overclock) and with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M and it still runs everything great. I just can't run new games in ultra settings and on highest res anymore, but the rest works fine. My laptop for example doesn't kill itself over 1920*1080 "very high detail" FO4, the cooling will be audible though. As pointed out before, buy good stuff and it will stay good for many years. Btw, nice to see you'll stick to Win7, the new Windows OS are one of the main reasons I wouldn't even want another computer atm.

You need more information on the MSI mainboard.

The MSI mainboard determines which hardware can be installed.

The Mainboard supports either an Intel CPU or an AMD CPU. Not both.

The mainboard limits the RAM(-memory) used: Either DDR-3 or DDR-4. As DDR-4 is the latest development, prices started high, while DDR-3 was cheap. Currently both are at the same price, it seems.

The power supply is another limitation. If the wattage is low, you cannot obtain some high-end power hungry videocard like the ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 STRIX OC GAMING for 470,- anyway. Besides that: You're getting totally ripped at 470,-. In the moment you buy that, somebody is laughing in his chair at a pool on the Bahamas.

So get us some specs of the mainboard and PSU, then we can tell much better whether the combinations possible at 510 €uro are worth buying.

When my mainboard-CPU combo broke 2 years ago, I had little money and no choice at all. I obtained Mainboard, CPU, CPU-Cooler and Memory for about 390€, if I remember correctly. Considering that you got a mainboard already but need a videocard, 510 € is a sum that can get you some decent hardware.

I regret to have bought only 8 GB of RAM, as high end games like GTA V require 8GB minimum, and if you got a sufficient videocard, those 8GB will lead you to certain limits then. WoW, MW:O or War Thunder are no problem with 8GB though.

Yup, pretty much what Dukat said.

I bought mine November 2015, my aim was simply Fallout 4.

I bought medium home use Motherboard (Asus H170 chipset, in its Pro model), decent mid range GPU (GeForce GTX960 from ASUS' Strix series), maximised the memory at 16GB PC3000 using decent brand (TEAM), and finally, chose the decent mid range latest generation CPU (Intel's Skylake) once again, Intel i5 5600 with 6 MB cache - 3.2 GHz to get that DDR4 capability. More importantly, I bought SSD, which saves 5 minutes of my lifetime each from lesser waiting time on booting. The store nicely upgraded my power supply to Corsair model (750W) from a relatively unknown Malaysian brand one.

It will smoothly ran Fallout 4 and FarCry 4 at maximum settings. But with DLCs and Mods, you'll began to see some decrease, but still pretty much playable. Another plus is that the computer is pretty silent.

Around this time you can get at least Radeon RX4## series or GeForce GTX10## series. For Radeon, you can go for their -70 (RX470) model or -60 (GTX1060) for GeForce. AMD moderately increase the price once you go to -80 model, but Nvidia goes steeper from -60 to -70. But as a serious budget gamer, you either get their -70 or Radeon's -80 model.

Regarding the Operating Systems: Microsoft will end their support for Windows 7 soon. As the security in IT world becoming ever increasingly a big concern, you should consider 10. With my SSD at least, the OS runs way smoother than my Lollipop Android phone (HTC 10) or my mom's iPhone SE. Skip 8 or 8.1 altogether, that's a tablet wannabe for lazy users (dumbed down interfaces) that will also install more shovelwares without consent than the 10.

The motherboard i already have is a MSI MB B150M NIGHT ELF LGA1151 DDR4 SATA3 SATA-EXP. Normally 115 euro, i got it cheaper.

For Intel motherboard chipsets just look at the prefixes.

B = Business, also the cheapest. But durable, stable, and reliable. At the cost of performance. Some say, it will actually run simulations much smoother, because it is heavily focused on calculations and such instead of complex graphics / effects processing
H = Home, adequate for most of your needs. This is more like a balanced stuff, jack of all trades. My mobo is H170, the Pro model, which tuned more for gaming needs rather than picture-editing / blog article typing.
Q/Z = Whatever shiznit is this, but it is made for your insane gaming, overclocking competition, FPS bragging needs.

The bigger the number, usually means increase in overall performance.

Just get a decent SkyLake generation (as your socket dictates) i5. Mine is i5-6500

^^ What Zoologic said. Take the i5-7500 for 199,- €uro. The i5-7400 is 187,- €uro, the i5-7600 is 254,- €uro. Makes the i5-7500 a logical choice. Mine is an i5-4590.
