Do 'All-Vehicle' Maps have a place in FH2?
« on: 09-01-2016, 23:01:02 »
I was wondering about it while playing the CMP Battle of Britain earlier today. I'm wondering what the Community/ Devs/ Testers think about 'All-Vehicle' maps in FH2? Maps where there's no flags for infantry to cap, only vehicles to play as.

Most FH2 maps try to have something for everyone to do (infantry/tanks/planes) but sometimes history dictates that certain vehicles be removed. However, there are a lot of battles in history where the typical infantry just didn't play a role. Midway, BoB, Convoy attacks in the Mediterranean or Atlantic, Bombing runs over Europe etc...

FH1 had maps like Rheinuebung, Midway, the original BoB etc... but not everybody likes using vehicles. Playing with tanks and planes seems a bit more specialized in FH2 than it was in FH1. And with 100 player servers, 'All-Vehicle' maps can become very crowded very quickly. I wonder if an official 'All-Vehicle' map popped on the server, if a bunch of people would be unhappy and quit because they don't like vehicles.

I personally think that 'All-Vehicle' maps could have a place in FH2 if done right. But I wonder how everyone else feels. There's also a poll if you wanna vote ;D

I haven't seen a proper all-vehicle map so far, but I can image they would fit FH2.

i am infantry only, but as long as there are places for me to fire machine guns or aa,  its all good for a map = 30 minutes or so...

This would be great, especially for the last battles. The map size could be fairly modest, with less detailed buildings and such... as long as it would be fun, with old and new vehicles in the mix.

For the "last battles"? I was thinking more of something like the battle of Brody. The battles in 1945 were characterised more by a bunch of Russian tanks and lots of Panzerfausts with the occasional Panzer in support on the other side.

What I mean were the breakthrough attempts, small skirmeshes and the various kampfgruppe's, ad-hoc panzer divisions constructed from rather colourful but desperate elements. Good examples can be found throughout Panzertruppen 2, Tigers in Combat 1-2-3, Panzerwrecks series.

I think the biggest question here is the one Forgottenkevinhope kind of answered. Are there a lot of people out there that would be bored by an all-vehicle map? If a map like 'Rheinuebung' popped up on the server today, would it deplete the player numbers?

For me, I can find fun on almost any map. I'll play is infantry, tanker, pilot or whatever the situation calls for. So long as an 'all vehicle' map is made historically accurate, I'm all for it.

Last night there were full 100 people playing Battle of Britain. Was so epic that we really should have more such maps.

I think a couple wouldn't hurt. In my opinion they were a bit too common in FH0.7, but having a battle of Britain style map to play occasionally or when server populations are lower can be a nice change.

Well only 18 people voted but it's less split than I thought it would be. I'd be interested to see if some sort of 'all-vehicle' map was included how many people would complain about it on the server ;)

If there would be one all-velichles map, that would be Battle of Britain. That map has biggiest potencial for being all-velichles,in this case airplane. This map cloud be 60% of sea and 20% of simple terrain  but 20% of city/factories or some objectives. This kind of map(which would be 4km & 4km) could have bigger view of distance. This would be awsome map(Atleast for me) and FH2 has already a lot of planes for this.
P.S. Dont tell me -if you make map. I want to discus.

I would love to see Battle of Britain map without objectives like factories or radars, as it is rather difficult to potray such gameplay in non arcadish way. Battle of Britain map focused on dogfights only, like the one made by FHT (I think?) long time ago, but with a very limited ammount of tickets, would be great. Or even better with planes being "objectives", so the goal of the map would be to destroy a certain ammount of enemies fighters in order to win. On such map it will be important to stay alive, kill not to get killed, and cooperate with your team to achieve the victory. With a team of good pilots it could be a very interesting scenario, with a team of people who have no idea about piloting, such map would end within 5 minutes or even less and it would not drag for those who don't like to fly.

It could be a generic, not very detailed, 4x4km map with airfields on both sides, representing Germans in occupied France in the southern part of them map and Brits in northern part, with airfield located in safe zones, behind the ABC lines, to prevent enemies from attacking you on the ground. Fighter planes, codded as spawnpoint vehicles, spawns only once, and all spawn in the same time (for example 50 planes per side, splitted in 10 planes per 5 small airstrips in different locations to avoid cluttering, but at the same time making it possible for all 100 ppl on the server to get at least one plane). Code fighters to act as the only spawnpoints on the map and map will last as long as your team is in the air. Runnning out of fighters = no more spawnpoint = defeat.

Dogfights, and pure skills only, would determine who is the winner.

This is very interest idea which I find awsome! But still that would be too much airplanes to follow about. Thats were mid bombers come- more people and one plane. And target could be stationary ships. They have AA for players who dont like planes too much,so they have fun too and thay can repair ship. Just put 2-2 ships on different sides of 'England'. AND to make that ships are not main objectives, but enemy fighter planes like you said.Ships are better than cities and radars. Pure Idea of only fighters with little tickets is more PR? And big teamwork on FH2 server?

P.S. I would like better to FHT Battle of Britain to be in CMP and to see all dogfights

In FH0.7, The Battle of Britain map is objective-based, and of course, like jan has said, it is full of exploits, making the gameplay very arcadish. The Brits usually sports an army of engineers tightening bolts around the objective buildings. The Germans relentlessly arriving with more Ju-88s (which is a bit unrealistic) and Stukas, escorted by a handful of Bf-109Es and Bf-110s, which are more interested in hunting than escorting. Maybe it is the only map where we can find Boulton-Paul Defiant reverse-firing fighters actively hunting enemy fighters. It is also the map where ramming your Hurricane to a fully crewed bomber actually rewarding. Since most will bail out when the plane's health is nearly depleted and deny you the kill.

Now, about ships-only map. One of the main factors why maps like Rheinuebung doesn't sell is that only few people gets to taste the action. The gun stations are very limited, and the ship captain usually steers the ship either aggressively close (therefore unrealistic boarding party action) or rather play BVR, where many sailors are just crowds aimlessly wandering around the deck. There are some scout planes, but a skilled AA gunners will easily shoot them down. I saw people using it to close the distance between ships, bail out, and perform Navy SEAL-like infiltration on unsuspecting enemy ships. Developers resorted to limit the kits to rifles and knives only, but people with insta-gib talent couldn't be prevented from unleashing their skills when they have successfully boarded your ship.

The problem with FH2 is, the map will be very small compared to FH0.7, and it has very limited draw distance.

Small maps not only hinder planes and fast-moving vehicles, but also tank combat. Tanks in FH2 feel more vulnerable because of the lack of space. Any guy with Pzfaust/Bazooka/PIAT can hide anywhere and still be within perfect distance to launch the warhead. Limited draw distance, like I experienced in Gazala not only kill the fun, but unrealistic as well, the enemy completely disappears from your screen despite being visibly bigger than your gun reticle. Allowing the enemy to escape easily.

Vehicles will have more devoted users in BF1942, because it also has a very limited FPS controls, very little eye candy: e.g. reload animation sequence not fully visible, no iron sights, funny playermodel physics... you could be sent flying hundred metres high if the explosions hits you hard enough. In Kharkov, I was standing in front of a T34-76, repairing it, suddenly a shot from a Panzer IVF1 bounced from the front hull, I was sent flying high, still alive holding the wrench, died on the ground, and counted as suicide. I'd rather be on track, than on foot.
