DRM does just more than hurt customers.
It actually has a lot of negatives than positives, much like un-needed feature, just because some incompetent people got overly paranoid over things they don't understand.
DRM serves to hackers as:
A challenge: hackers love to overcome things, because it is some sort of achievement to break something notoriously designed to be difficult.
More rewarding targets: hackers will receive a lot of fame for successfully breaking more difficult DRM, especially from pirates and haters alike.
DRM serves to developer/publisher as:
Insurance: while, there are no proven method of getting rid of pirates, DRM seems to be an acceptable assurance for old farts who never play game at the executive level or investors who don't know jack shit about computer. It is all to ensure them that all precautions against piracy has been implemented according to "industrial standard."
Extra cost: hackers will race in time to break the DRM as soon as possible, completely reversing all the investment in DRM. The return of investment (ROI) in DRM will be 0 by the time it is cracked. They turned blind eye, because of "insurance" reason.
Extra work: Some DRMs require developers to alter the design or the architecture of the game processing significantly, causing some issues and the game to break in previously unexpected areas.
DRM serves to customers as:
Extra burden: DRM takes more processing resources, be it data media reading speed, internet connection, and ultimately, electricity to adds nothing to the whole experience.
Extra cost: The cost of implementing the DRM is paid by the customer.
Potential problem: false positives and degradation of performance normally occurs with DRM. It can lead to loss of personal data (like save games, achievements/trophies, online account, etc)
I am suspecting DRM lobbyist is getting stronger and stronger. We never really needed DRM, because pirates will never buy the game anyway, and they are always succeeding. Their industry should die, they drain resources to contribute nothing to real economy. Kinda like professional ass-wiper, hired by old farts who never actually needed them when you got diapers.
