Submachine guns
« on: 08-07-2012, 09:07:12 »
You know the deal, what's your favorite, what's your least favorite, tips and tricks, etc.

First tip: single-shot mode is underused, or at least I think it is, since I hardly ever liberate an enemy's SMG and have it in single-shot when I pick it up. The Beretta, both Stens and both Thompsons have single-shot mode (while the Grease Gun fires so slowly it may as well have it as well) and in the right circumstances it makes all the difference. Indeed, I rock the single-shot automatically and only switch to full auto when traveling from point A to point B and enemies may appear out of nowhere. You don't need me to explain single-shot tactics to any of you but I find you live longer when you're taking your time and keeping your weapon in single-shot encourages cautious behaviour.

Second tip: learn to fire from the hip. Iron sights take time to bring up, even with SMGs and every second the other guy isn't dead is a second he could be killing you. You keep a wider peripheral vision as well.

Third tip: aim for the knees. While you may inch around a corner aiming chest-high with a rifle, aiming a foot lower with an SMG allows the inevitable recoil to bring the gun up and give you more chances to hit, which is obvious, but something I often forget until it's too late.

Last but not least, I'm sure you all know how much of a boner I have for the sweetass pick-up kits on most maps, and these can be a savior for you when inevitably run into the spawnable SMG being unvavailable all round.

Observe: Trench broom always unavailable on Fall of Tobruk? Lucky there's 3 or 4 Thompson kits with HE grenades scattered around the place (replaced with MP40 kits featuring geballtes and a wrench when the Axis have the flags nearby). Sten unavailable on Goodwood, or just hate the Thompson SL kit? Plenty of Sten SL kits hanging around on tables in Cagny. US maps are scattered with Grease Gun and Thompson kits, and I've had many maps where I spawn as your bog standard rifleman every time and hunt down an SMG without ever needing to actually spawn with one.

So what are your tips and tricks for SMGs? I know there's a couple sort-of SMG threads here but let's get a really good one going and hopefully we all play the better for it. What guns do you like and what ones could you miss the God damn Hindenburg with?

I'd rank them in order from favorite to least like this:

1 Sten - ultimate room-cleaner, with the bonus of feeling like a sexy French resistance fighter with it.
2 Grease Gun - slow rate of fire allows great accuracy.
3 M1A1 Thompson - good accuracy and on seemingly every non-Africa map.
4 Thompson (20) - seems more accurate than the Thompson with the drum, never hard to find either.
5 MP40 - accurate out to great distances and easy to group shots; not a fan of the sights, though.
6 Thompson (50) - hard to control, but in single-shot works well and sheer volume of bullets is often enough.
7 Sten (silenced) - the power of the normal Sten, but unfortunately you can't make a racket while using it.
8 Beretta - Lots of you swear by it but I can't hit anything with it, the sights just piss me off.

So don't be shy, everyone who will ever make a single post on this forum will have a tip or opinion worth adding to this thread, so contribute!

1.Berreta. Hands down. Even when amazing PPSH and even more amazing KP 31 are introduced, this thing beats it all.

Really like the 20 round Thompson. Accurate, shoots fast, amazing on full auto at distances up to 150m and usually only takes about 1-4 hits to take someone down. Second favorite is the silenced sten, love being able to kill people quietly although usually have to go for a headshot.

I'm 99% sure that the 50 round thompson is identical to the 20 round one.

Nobody ever seems to know about the secret thompson on crete, with the boom boom nades. It is ALWAYS available. However I'm not giving away any secrets.

Now that I remember it, there are two hidden thompsons on crete, same flag too, iirc. You can't actually see them, you have to know exactly where they are  ;D

Edito

I like using the M3 a lot and was a monster with it before I went on a Fh2 hiatus.

Now I like using the M1A1 thompson a ton, its accurate and I get a three/four round burst across the map with ease.

The beretta is great, a little more recoil than I'd like, but otherwise fine from my experiences last night. Recoil might be attributed to lag though.

That may be, but I know of a lot of people (myself included) who find the 20-round Thompson more accurate and easier to deal with. Whether it's just because with 30 fewer bullets you're more careful, I don't know, but even on single-shot, rarely with the 20 Thompson am I endlessly firing wild shots at distant enemies like I am with the 50-round drum.

I take it you're not talking about the one with the purple HE nades that's on a few maps? I must find this kit if that is the case.

I'm another that loves the Beretta. I usually treat it more like a select fire carbine than an SMG. Usually on Giarabub or Barce I will get it instead of an M38 carbine or something. It's pretty good for medium ranges and if you're lucky you can get good with it out at longer ranges.

Other than that, I like the Thompson with the 50rnd drum. I know it can be hard to control, but if you fire in bursts you can actually hit people. The trick is not to treat it like it's got a 50rnd drum and fire in a more controlled way like other guns. For me the Thompson with the 20rnd just doesn't hold enough per mag. I can use it, but not as to the effectiveness of the one with the 50rnd.

My next favorite is the MP40. It's pretty abundant, and because of that I've gotten good with it. I can hit stuff pretty far out.

Next is the Sten. I haven't used it as much but I still love it. The suppressed Sten is pretty good but I can't hit anything with it (we need a De Lisle Carbine!)

After that it's the M1A1. I use it, it works. Not much more than that. I can hit stuff pretty far out with it but I'm not all that wild about it.

Last is the M3 Grease Gun. I love the thing, I love the rate of fire, the sound it makes, everything. But, no matter how hard I try, I can't hit a thing with it.

The difference between the 50rnd and the rest of the thompsons is just the sights, that is the only thing that makes it unuseable for me.

The ones with a red stripe through the middle.

One can be found in a bed, somewhere on the map. Somewhere

Are they M1A1 or M1928 thompsons?
