A Sukhoi Superjet 100 went Missing in West Java

A Sukhoi Superjet 100 went missing in West Java after they lost contact with local ATC during the joyflight demonstration.

As it said, the plane circles around southern Java island coastal lines and then turn back north to Jakarta but requested a change it flying altitude from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet. There is a huge mountainous area in-between, some like the active volcano of Mount Salak is over 7,000 feet high. The mountain range is quite a popular recreation destination for those who live in Jakarta and surrounding area.

The plane for the moment is still said to be "missing." Let's hope for the best for all 46 people on board the flight.

My friend posted a few pictures of the plane while it is still being displayed in the tarmac this morning.

Thankfully he didn't join the unfortunate flight.

That Sukhoi has just received a few orders from local startup airline Sky Aviation this morning. This is quite an awkward and worrisome moment for sure.

Am I the only one who finds it in bad taste that on a developing story like this the BBC site points to "Related Articles: Air Disasters Timeline."

I hope it's something such as trouble with electronics rendering them unable to contact anyone for the moment to say theyre all safe an unharmed.

Well, their fuel would have been depleted hours ago, so they assumed the worst. They already began the search with helicopters and such, but currently the area is being showered with heavy rain and thick clouds, so the SAR copters have been called off.

On 9 May 2012, a Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 airliner went missing on a demonstration flight with 42 passengers and eight Russian crew members on board after it took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. The airliner began descending shortly after taking off but vanished from radar screens at approximately 14:12 local time (07:12 UTC) at 6,200 feet (1,900 m) in a mountainous area over Jakarta. The Sukhoi Superjet is presumed to have crashed.[9

Well.....thats great marketing..

They finally found the wreckage. It hits straight into steep cliff edge of that suspected dormant volcano. Only 1.7 miles from the early estimated coordinate. Currently they are trying to evacuate the bodies and retrieve the FDR & Voice recorder (the "black box")

Hope this never happen again.

"Controlled flight into terrain" again?

Most probably. They are flying low in mountainous area.

Aw damn :( So close to get over the ridge if you look at that photo. I find it a bit careless to fly so low in general in a region like indonesia. Why not make test flights over flat landscape ?

I mean, this was probably a pilot/flight controller fault but still unnecessary risk to fly a lately developed jet in such a terrain. Especially when the pilot changes height and performs maneuvers for demonstration purposes, like it's usually the case with such flights. Sad.

No, they are not doing such "flight test" more like a "joyride." They carried 42 passengers consisted of potential customer airline officials, technicians, would-be flight attendants, journalists, and Sukhoi's own team crew (8 people). So 50 victims in total.

It was a sight-seeing joy flight, bound for southern Java. They flew twice during that day, the morning flight was okay (said to be following the same route), my friend boarded that flight. The second flight resulted in this accident.

Air Force pilots in certain countries would get into trouble for flying that low with a much smaller and more capable jet fighter (not in all situations but at least in some where he endangers the lives of others etc), I don't know which knob thought it would be smart to fly that low in a passenger jet.
Epilepsy is bad.

Yeah, but the guy is Sukhoi's experienced test pilot. Don't know what he was thinking or what was happening in the cockpit at that time.

A bit interesting, I could have been on that plane two months ago, or some other Russian plane to Indonesia. I'm uneasy at the thought of it.

this is wierdly similar to the C-130 accident in Sweeden`s highest mountain where the plane was lost from radar and hit the cliffside just meters from the top... the impact zone looks excactly the same

Guess people already started making comments like "It was russian, you expected what".
Loosing part of their employees was probably the worst part of the accident. But as there were future customers inside, then I guess this one is the worst part.
