There are bad people in every religion.

You can interpret the Bible with some common sense, noticing that it was written by some men who didn´t understand a thing about the world some thousand years ago. Yet it has some morale standards as to honor your parents and care for others.

You can however interpret it word by word, which means you are going to oppress women and homosexuals.

The same applies to the Koran.

You can´t judge a whole religion on the actions of a few. Just because I´m Catholic (well, officially I am - haven´t been to church in 10 years), it doesn´t mean I share the outdated opinions of the church.

The only thing that makes me suspicious is that - among the extremists - suicide bombings and extreme brutality - seem to be only that widespread/ frequent around extremist Muslims. It´s sad that the whole religion suffers from those few. But you don´t see Christians, Jews etc. blowing themselves up in crowds.

Picture your religion 600 years ago, inquisition, witch burning, crusade, etc. I just wish they don't follow the same Abrahamic cycle.

Yeah. But we are allowed to think that way, despite it being true. And this is where the problem is being caused by left winged people. Their constant hammering of this, breeds extreme right winged Extremists. Trust me, these guys will start popping up soon. Shooting innocent muslims and probaly again jews.

That is still no excuse to do it today.
-i am fairly sure that if they took porn off the internet, there would only be one website left and it would be called bring back the porn "Perry cox, Scrubs.

Well a reason for this is that since the very beginning of Islam the Quran has been taken as the word and command of Allah and has been read and preached ever since, with great ease and native understanding. The same can not be said for the Christian Bible, it was almost always in Latin and back then that wasn't really spoken by anyone outside of the clergy, as well as certain translations being forbidden. With that in mind, as well as the fact that church and state were not always separate, Islamic rulers could be potentially more pious than Christian rulers. Even today many laws in Islamic countries come from the Quran's teachings, the Christian Bible however is not as exacting, and again wasn't really read by those with state power.

Bah, religious violence. One person responds to another's promotion of their religion with "I don't really give a shit" and he gets killed.

@slayer
Its their fault as well for not driving these individuals away. It may be the government's or foreign politics in the past that made these people do what they do now but it's also the logical people's of their circle fault for not turning them in.
Idiots and extremists will always be that. Someone has to put them in line and who better than their own.
OK, so if a Greek goes out of line in my country, you come and take him away? Please note the ridiculousness...

@ attacks: glad it's over now (somehow I knew these guys were going for some kind of suicide scenario, although it's really tragic they had to involve even more innocent people in it). I really hope people keep their sanity in the aftermath. I'm happy to see so many good reactions to this, and I'm sad there are still brainless people attacking mosks because of the attacks. But: way better than 14 years ago, nice to see some progress and also more unity instead of the us and them rhetorics of demagogues.

OK, well, I think not every muslim knows everything about all other muslims, so I think it's perfectly logical that these guys (who are as much an enemy to muslims as to non-muslims) were not reported by muslims.

In fact, they were being followed by French secret service until last summer. Then the investigation was stopped, because they did "nothing suspicious".

You are really stuck in "us vs them" thinking, maybe you should try something different for a change, it helps you to see stuff from a different angle.

The problem is not Islamic or even religious, terrorism goes beyond that. Epanastatikos Agonas, Bouras. Crazy, murdering, lunatics are to blame, the various ideologies they follow come later.

Yeah, but one particular terrorism franchise is more successful than others. Surely there must be some secret formula that makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

Also, apparently, they are the most successful in racking up body count, including people of their own religion (which consisted the overwhelming majority of the victims). Other terrorist groups are not as much blood thirsty as this one (or maybe just less competent).

The problem I think is much to how they structure their real life upon their faith: action does not constitute piety. If you being an asshole in the public like cutting queue line or litter, it is very much excusable than if you forgot to pray to God or look at porn (the later is pretty much similar to US attitude towards sex). Even if you look at porn, it is pertinent that everybody other than you (and probably God) not knowing this secret. The concept of piousness is regarded highly in Islam, and they brag to everyone about their pilgrimage trip. Yet, a lot of people never really made themselves aware of (or deliberately ignored) their daily life conduct. And from my experience, those people have always been passive-aggressive about their stance and made a lot of ironic statements.

We have yet to see something like this:

Quote
Headline: Bangor farmer Alan Graham not for turning on Rihanna
...
He said on Friday he did not "believe young ladies should have to take their clothes off to entertain".

"I am entitled to hold that opinion," Mr Graham said.

"I would have more respect and more care for that young lady than lots of the people running about who want to see her taking her clothes off.

"I wish her no ill."
...
The farmer said Rihanna had been "very gracious and respectful" when they spoke and that they had "parted company on good terms".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-15126628

You wouldn't like how my previous neighbour, who is adamant religious, would have handled similar situation that Alan Graham faced. They might be similarly soft-spoken, typical smiling charming polite old men, but my neighbour would very likely incite heated debate with his incoherent antics and pseudo-scientific understandings, if he were to speak with young people of western background.

If... only... they realised, like my Catholic school that teaches evolution and religion at the same time, that faith is not literal science to be interpreted by simpleton minds.

I'm taking my own freedom
puttin' it in my song
singing loud and strong
proving all day long
I'm takin' my freedom
puttin' it in my stroll
I'll be hop-steppin' y'all
lettin' the joy unfold
