GTX 260 going into safe-mode
« on: 15-01-2012, 21:01:02 »
Hello Everyone,
I am facing a big problem which I need to get fixed ASAP. Whenever I play a game that consumes a lot of resources (In my case ARMA II), my GPU quits on me (It is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 192 core, 65NM). I OC'd it to very reasonable levels, and the cooling is much better than before (increased the fan speed to 80%; temperatures always stay below 65°C). My settings are: core clock: 626 shader clock: 1350 memory clock: 1053, stock settings were: Core clock: 518 shader clock: 1080 memory clock: 1008. While I play it occaisonally resets to the 400MHZ safe-mode with no obvious reason. I knowingly put this into the Off-Topic
section, since my OC works perfectly fine with FH2. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Please note that the very same card is often being shipped with the very same values that I make use of in my OC.

I have the same card... dunno what it does, but it surely is wonky for me also.. sometimes the fan stops, sometimes I get "purple patterns" on the screens and it does a bunch of other silly things as well.

could be it also goes in to safe mode... dunno how you know that though... thinking about a new card  >:(

Many people barbecued their videocard with ArmAII, from what I can see. If you browse ArmAII forums, you'll find many sardonic comments.

I can give you my opinion, though i can't proove anything. But the engine is old and uses old standards that modern videocards/drivers are not optimized for. So by default the required fan speed is too low and it seems like the sheer amount of these outdated routines being processed spams the videocard to death. However this is just my personal "feeling", I'm not an expert into coding or anything. But I expirience these crashes in ArmAII as well. And I'm not overclocking. It just doesn't run stable for more than a couple of hours.

If you wanna prevent the crashes in ArmAII, don't overclock the videocard and raise the cooling level for the videocard to max. There is nothing more demanding and un-optimized than ArmAII.

And all those guys I've seen playing ArmAII for 6-8 hours without interruption OC'ed their Fans and still had crashes.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom

It suddenly started to work rather properly, but I will still get a new PC this year to play ARMA II. at maximum detail. However FH2 with Vsync and 16X CSAA Antialiasing and 16X Anisotropic filtering looks so amazing, I don't think there's anything better than FH2 (regarding content AND graphics!) !

Well,
I bought a GTX 550TI and am happy now-almost. I'm running ARMA II with no lower than 33 (usually ~50) FPS but am having an extremely annoying case of micro-lag/stuttering. This however occurs only when I move (it's moreover the act of movement that is stuttering), the game itself runs flawlessly (this issue suddenly popped up without warning)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just a note aside: I am sellling my GTX 260 now, the card works perfectly fine and can cope with FH2 all maxed out; if you'd like to buy it, please pm me.

I think the problem here would be ArmAII and not your card.
