A glorious expedition to Bastogne.
« on: 01-07-2011, 17:07:37 »
Together with my best friend I shall set up a expedition to rebellious lands, to acquire intelligence about the area.

And after we have done that, some sightseeing. So what fun is there around Bastogne? And yes, we only go there for the war stuff.

Leaving July 15th, setting up camp. So we can go have fun on 16, 17, 18 and 19. On the 20th we return to our own lands. We at least want to spend one day digging, don't tell the coppers.

And if anyone went there before on a budget, what's a good campsite? If not, we will take a random one.

Yeah I didn't post there on purpose as it would just disappear in the giant mess of other posts. I'm quite the punk.

we should only have one big thread called "the discussion thread" to keep the forum uncluttered

At first I was like: Oh, cool thread about a place I haven't heard much about when it comes to traveling.

Then I read this

And yes, we only go there for the war stuff

No beer, not interested.

And you call yourself a Dutchman!

Beer?! No!

I am quite certain they drank booze during the war, we will deal with that.

And that said, I have no interest in a drunken vacation. Not my style.

Except for your stated intention to loot an archaeological site, I support visiting Bastogne.

Bastogne area bin there a lot, plan from Bastogne as center, visit Foy and the woods around it (foxholes etc) Houffalize with Panther, there was a good place there to get a good meal (forgot it) Trois Ponts, La Gleize (With King Tiger) Etc.

Back. It was great. Germany, I forgive everything you ever did, just keep those no speed limits on the Autobahn will you? All in all drove about 1,500 KM. We didn't get to digging sadly, only one fully dry day and that was arrival day. We didn't want to bring out that piece of electronics in a rainstorm. Let alone dig holes while getting wet by rain..

We didn't really plan anything and just went for it.

Day 1 - Arrival

Day 2 - Bastogne sightseeing and one museum there, sadly the Historical Center was closed as we knew. After that to Diekirch in Luxembourg. In Diekirch there is a very nice museum, I was there 5 years ago but they improved it. Very neat entrance now and a extremely large collection.

Day 3 - Quest for breakfast (we forgot to order bread) made us end up in Rochefort, after that we found Grottes de Hotton on our map so we went to explore that. Neat cave, after that into Hotton itself. Being a tourist and all, eating Belgium food.

Day 4 - Another museum, this one was in the British sector so it focused heavily on that. And some more random cruising, found a Firefly turret and all that.

Day 5 - Ride home, cruising the Autobahn with 170 KM/H. And the car was alright.

All in all nice trip. If you plan to go around Bastogne while wanting to see alot of the sights, prepare for plenty of driving. Seriously, prepare because in Wallonia they don't know how to make roads. Or they did knew it 100 years ago and never bothered to try again.

I think the proper name for that was "Unite & Revolt".

Anyways, Fuchs, why shouldn't your car be alright? Even my 60PS hopper packs 170km/h. Unless you were driving a Kübelwagen, suited for your epic history inspired task, no?  :) And actually, the lack of a general speed limit was being discussed a lot in the past years.  :-\

Well I never imagined my horsecart could move that quick.

It's just that I doubted this car had even driven that hard, once on speed he was getting very optimistic. The speedcounter said 200 km/h but the navigation thing said 180 km/h. But seems that this old Audi still got it. He runs a lot better after it, the engine just runs smoother. Pedal to the metal is only good for a car, therefore, suspend all speed limits. Everywhere!
