men of war series is an RTS.
its main features (imo) are each individual soldior has its own inventory with ammo, weapons, greandes, first aid stuff etc. so for example in multiplayer when you buy a "rifleman squad" you get 5 rifleman, each equipped with a rifle, ~50 shots of ammo, 2 bandanges 2 grenades and kit to make 1 sandbag wall. in addition the squad leader gets 1 at grenade. now as a battle progresses and stuff dies your guys may wanna pick up more weapons, like that juicy MG42 that german dude had, or maybe a panzerfaust etc.
same thing with tanks, limited ammo, various hitzones (turret, tracks gun, hull, engine, ammo etc) and even a fuel tank that in longer and dynamic battle needs a refill. when a tank gets hit often the shots penetrate the turret and all of the crew but the driver will die (since he is in the bow and not the turret) you can still drive the tank to safety or let the driver switch positions and fire the gun.
only if the hull is destroyed a tank is really gone.
if for example "only" the turret got destroyed it can be repaired witch takes really long time but after that the tank is operational again.
most note-able though is the direct control feature.
press a button you you get direct control over the selected soldier or vehicle. which in tanks makes aiming for weak spots easier or allows you to take shoots through buildings(the shot will loose penetration power), for infantry i mostly used with snipers, flamethrowers or when throwing grenades.
the penetration model etc is fairly realistic, same with armor values of tanks etc.
so after a long battle you may have kept one of your initial squad alive and now instead of a puny rifle he has a MG some fausts, loads of grenades and maybe even scavenged some body armor.
the tactical implications of line of sights (tanks cant see as far as they can fire but with the help of officers/sniper + binocs you can max it out), camouflage (hide in bushes) etc you get a really great battle atmosphere where every man counts.
the singleplayer is really nice too (at least in men of war, havent played much of the expansions yet).
in the end you get a great rts game with loads of action where each individual soldier can have great impact on the battle.
in the original MoW multiplayer you could play, USA, UK, USSR, Germany and Japan (which i loved so much
).
tactics are important but also skill in controlling individual soldiers/vehicles in certain situations can turn the tide of a battle.
one might say it like this
company of heroes - Men of war
day of defeat - red orchestra
while the one thing is more "arcade" the other has more depths, realism etc.
here a video
on the left is the units he has on the rights is the units he can "buy" (in multiplayer you get money over time and depending on game mode funds returned if a unit dies)
