IRC?
« on: 29-03-2009, 23:03:12 »
I just tried to get onto the IRC server, but I stumble upon a problem.

I tried mIRC, but it has a 30 days trial. Then I wanted to try Leafchat, but it won't install.

Has anyone got any idea how I can join?

Cheers,

Danger

Don't worry about the 30 day trial.  Once that's over, a pop up window will appear asking you to register.  Wait a few seconds, and a continue button will appear.  Click it, and it passes you right on to IRC, no probs.

Use Pidgin:

http://www.pidgin.im/

Beware of some IRC clients. They do all sorts of naughty things. Pidgin is safer, and it works for MSN, ICQ, and AIM and more.

Or if you use Firefox you can install a plugin/addon called Chatzilla. It is what I use.

I use that too and it's nice. Never had a problem with it.

I know I should probably already know this, but what is the FH2 public IRC channel?

I use Cygwin on Terminator, to ssh to a remote shell running irssi on screen.

But kidding aside, I'd recommend KVIrc as an mIRC alternative; it's better in every possible way. There's also 2 webapps on http://www.gamesurge.net/
Quote
The mibbit IRC widget which replaces the Java applet on http://www.gamesurge.net/chat allows you to connect to GameSurge without using any ports but the regular http port (80) which is open almost everywhere. Just in case you prefer the Java applet, it is still available at http://www.gamesurge.net/javachat.

For those who want to add the widget to their website: either you can link the one on the GameSurge site and pass channels via the URL (/chat/CHANNELNAME; e.g. /chat/gamesurge for #gamesurge or /chat/CHANNELNAME/DEFAULTNICKNAME)...

Opera has a built in IRC client, which I use. I rarely see anyone talk on #fhmod, though. :P

Maybe I just don't stick around long enough.

Is it just me or is irc.gamesurge.net down atm? I keep trying to connect, and even pinged them with cmd, but I keep timing out...

just try some other server or wait

thing is the irc channel has many user in it bur nobody says something.

most people idleing there are testers and some devs and the usual people.
most "traffic" can be seen on the secret internal channels there is always something going on. but due to the secret content displayed and portrait in the channel public access is restricted and most testers, devs just stick to one channel than writing stuff in more than one.

still irc is a quick way to get some answer on some question or stuff like that.

Nice, this made my day ! A command line client to use with screen is just perfect.
But why do you use cygwin instead of putty for ssh?

I can also recommend pidgin IM. It can handle icq, irc, jabber, aim, msn, sametime, and and and. ;)

Edit: Oh, almost forgot to mention that it's open source too!
