Off-Topic / Re: Call of Duty 4 multiplayer

To my knowledge CoD4 wasn't modded very much, so you're probably not going to find any very popular mods.

The vanilla multiplayer is solid enough though, so long as you're okay with doing a lot of spraying and praying.

Looks like someone recycled the map from HoI2. :P

Never seen the game but from looking at Paradox Interactive's website I'll guess Victoria.

Destructible environments have to be the most overrate gameplay elements ever.

Not if done properly, which no game has to this point afaik. We'll probably not see well made destructable enviroments for a good time into the future.
There have been games where it has implemented well, just not any FPSs. For instance the destructible environments in CoH create some interesting situations gameplay wise and don't seem too unrealistic up until tanks come along and crush everything on the entire map.

If its an invalid CD key error your best bet is probably to just call EA.

Have fun with that  :-\

I sure hope this shows up given how much fun the old FH.7 kit that could call in a C47 was.

It has single player support on most maps but you'll be missing out on the most the game has to offer if you only play single player.

Suggestions / Re: Repair Delay for Static Weapons
« on: 31-05-2009, 22:05:02 »
This would be a terrible idea. As it stands already, AT/AA guns are massively vulnerable to tanks, planes and arty, and already take a good minute to repair as it is. And in that time, you can usually expect a plane or tank to return anyway, usually scoring an easy kill. And that's assuming an arty bombardment hasn't destroyed several guns/mg's/radios all at once... damage that would take a number of engineers many minutes to repair.

As it stands now, manning AT/AA guns is about the worst job in the game. You spend half your time repairing things (speaking of which, anyone ever seen anyone get more than 2 repair points?), and the other half generally being slaughtered by planes/tanks/arty. Why would you want to make it even more unbearable?

As Fuchs said, this applies more to some maps than others, and I could see leaving most light weapons(2 lbers, MGs, ect) as is. However, AA/AT guns are hardly that vulnerable on some maps, as any poor soul who has ever tried to take a solidly defended al Khad on el Alamien surely knows. And the thing is this wouldn't  make it take any longer to repair guns or really make them any worse in most cases, it would just give attackers a window of time to move in after an artillery barrage or bombing on fortified flags rather than having the defenses  become active again before they can even reach the flag zone.

And this would help defending infantry in a lot of cases too, since its difficult to mount a defense in areas where you're constantly getting raped by a flak cannon, such as the eastern flag on Aberdeen that is always get shot by the Flak38 at the middle flag. In that case even if you can convince a tanker to come kill the cannon it usually comes right back again almost immediately.

Suggestions / Repair Delay for Static Weapons
« on: 31-05-2009, 17:05:13 »
Would it be possible to add a short period, maybe 1-2 minutes, after a static AA or AT gun is destroyed in which it cannot be repaired? This is mostly just because some weapons are so close to spawnpoints that the player can just respawn and repair them within a minute of the gun being destroyed, a problem on maps like Crete where the Stuka is the only real weapon against them and it takes longer to land and rearm then it does to get the gun active again.

As an indication to players guns that can't be repaired could just be marked by smoking or something.

I guess they're in a pickup kit, so just a kit sitting in some tent somewhere that you can press "G" to pick up. I can't tell you of the top of my  head which maps they're in because I can't ever actually remember finding one-not that I've ever really looked though.

General / Re: BF2 Spawnsystem!

I like wave attacks. Maybe if you had a system where everyone spawns at once, and happened every minute or so...
I like this idea quite well, though it might make the problem worse since hidden SLs would become more difficult to find since there wouldn't be a constant stream of soldiers from them .

The APC system would work too, and given the limited number of APCs might even make squads work with each other. Giving APCs just a little more health, to the point that they could survive about 3 AT rifle shots, would be enough to give the squad at least enough time to bail before getting killed, and make them a lot more useful.

The biggest problem with changing the system to the APC way would be maps like 16-supercharge, which would be insanely difficult for one team without the current SL system.

Suggestions / Unarmored Vehicles
« on: 25-05-2009, 01:05:01 »
Currently I feel that soft-skinned vehicles like the Opel Blitz are too resistant to small-arms fire, in particular from SMGs. It takes about 50 rounds point blank to the cabin or engine compartment from either the MP40 or Thompson to kill a Opel Blitz-a volume that's practically impossible to get off even with the barrel-fed Thompson given the trucks' speed.

I can't really claim this isn't realistic since I have no idea how much punishment the engines on those trucks could take, but I've worked with miniature aircraft engines and while they're not fragile, I can't imagine them standing up to getting shot 40+ times, and the engine is probably to toughest component of the truck. Plus, softening up trucks would promote people to use halftracks, which are currently pretty underutilized, and stop people from trying to blitz through enemy lines in supply trucks.

Anyhow, if you complare CIV and HoI. How much heavier is HoI? Is it true that I gotta read a manual as the size of the holy bible and then play test rounds for 2 - 3 weeks and then give it a go?

The game is a good deal more complex than Civ4, but if you play as a large resource rich country that focuses mostly on ground forces like Germany or the USSR it's straightforward enough that you can pretty much jump right into a game(the fact that if you start in 1936 you get a while to familiarize with the game before combat starts helps too).

That being said I've been playing it since HoI 1 was around and I still don't fully understand how naval combat works  :-\

I've played HoI 1 and 2 and loved them both, but I the game doesn't do multiplayer very well. I tried playing with my friend a while back and the inability to pause the game made me just get overwhelmed.

Hopefully the new one will have better AI too since the current version doesn't respond as well as they should sometimes, though I've heard mods improve this.
