Suggestions / Re: The war 1939-1940
« on: 16-09-2009, 17:09:53 »

I have a feeling that the  bf1942 engine was a bit to immature for this kind of gameplay. I think that a 1939-1940 setup might work out now, if the maps are well thought off, preferably with lots of chokepoints or a push map system. The problem with early war maps for FH1 was IMHO the fact that warfare was too spread out. This is nearly for all FH1 maps so, but in a 1944/45 scenario it seemed to work(everybody takes a zook and hides in the bushes), but a 1940 it always seemed to take to long to get something done.

Agreed,

To say early wars will be a server emptier in FH2 is too premature (although i never played online). The infantry game play for us SPers© back then during FH for BF1942 quite suck big time because of the engine limitations. We also feel the same about it. Basically, infantries are cannon fodder in that game. There are too few things a player can do while being an infantry in BF1942. So, LANfest players certainly would immediately jump into any available vehicles rather than marching with boring style to the fights.

But its entirely different when i experienced FH2's infantry map like Giarabub, Tunis, and other smaller version maps. They're basically tankless maps, and notice that Giarabub even only has early war vehicles. I guess with more interesting environment (lush green European terrain) rather than bland dusty dessert of North Africa, and better gameplay as an infantry in BF2, the earlier combat would be more interesting.

Speaking about the environment, i feel that the FH2.2's Normandy far exceeds my expectation, and feeling like playing a CoD X or MoH:FH or some sort of ultra cool FPS in BF2 engine. Perhaps it is because of the "greenies". Love the Normandy maps.

Counterattack! was the coolest map that was ever made.  Only ignorant fools could not see that!

Love that too!

General Discussion / Re: FH pet hates.
« on: 16-09-2009, 06:09:40 »
My new pet hate are the people who think tanks are immobile bunkers. Not an hour ago, I was in the WaW public Goodwood server, and this guy just camped with the King Tiger at a crossroads far from ANY action the whole game. If anyne called him out on it, he claimed that they didn't know wartime tactics, and until we were a 'West Point graduate' like he was, we could just 'stfu'. I guess you could file this under the 'Swarm of newbie idiots with a new patch' thing

Maybe he wanted to simulate the lack of fuel for the Germans in later wars. j/k

Anyway, ambush tactics also works in FH, i don't get why people always want to be aggressive (perhaps getting bigger stats altogether?). "A good offense is a great defense" doesn't apply to all situations. Particularly if the flags are quite far from the rest and no decent weapons spawn there. The great thing about LANfest is that you don't need VOIP or any other desperate measure communication devices (a fist to the chin is always possible, since you're all within reach). Just body-language the guy to hide his StuGs between buildings and surprise the reckless enemy tank driver.

One person taking off on in a Jeep or Kubel at the start of a round without any passengers, getting killed immediately after in a vein attempt to cap a flag on their own - giving the opposing team a new ride in the process.

Oh I could go on.

That's very bot-like.

My list goes from how the bots understand less commands than the vanilla BF2. They used to know "get in" and "bail out". This time they only respond to "charge!"

Bots also repairs immediately when you shout "Need repairs, quick!" given no firefights nearby. Sometimes better than human players. But in FH2 they just do like what they usually do in FH1 or BF1942, they repair anything that has less than 100% health. Sometimes it is so silly that they run directly at you holding the wrench, and get ran over if you don't stop, making you an unintentional TKer.

Bots also steal tanks, but will give up when you force him out by overtaking his position.

Bots don't care about stats, so selfless that they sometimes "camp" at the spawnpoint like a waypointless bot. This bots are usually deaf, shouting "Charge!" to them are useless. However, they will shoot if they see enemy, you'll hate it if you are the enemy, trying to sneak and knife him and eventually FAIL it miserably.

United States, for no apparent reason. Would like to visit New York City, San Francisco, Houston, and Seattle-Tacoma-Renton (for a plane freak like me, it's a must). Other than that, i would love to see Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone old faithful geyser.

Netherlands, our former colonizers. I want to see what western influences they bring down here. Visit Amsterdam (of course), Den Haag, Rotterdam, see all those historical places, and how they taught us to save space by building a house and office at the same spot (home sweet office).

Kenya, just random pick. But i want to seriously see the continent where we all came from.

United Kingdom, just not to waste my lingual ability.

Germany, because i want to visit Europe so i pick this one as my priority. Would like to see Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich, and all those beautiful Bavarian and Alps villages, like Constanze, and lake Bodensee.

WW2 Movies recently seen:

Valkyrie -seen onboard Singapore Airline's A380 PTV

Well, i actually slept in the middle, i mean Tom Cruise is pretty boring and he is not all into the character and the tense WW2 atmosphere. But overall, a pretty nice treat for all WW2 fans out there. I gave this 5/10.

Defiance -seen onboard Singapore Airline's A380 PTV

This is quite good, and much better than Valkyrie. More interesting storyline but the guys unfortunately speak accented English (and some Russians). You can see more WW2 weaponry here than in Valkyrie, including the Panzer tanks. 6.5/10 here.

Australia - seen onboard Singapore Airline's 747-400 PTV

Entertaining, some WW2 stories about Japan invading (and landed) Australia's remote islands (fictional). Overall, it tells you a principal story (a bit exaggerated, it's a movie anyway) about Australia, nothing much. I rate it 7/10.

For comparison, i gave Band of Brothers 8/10 and Saving Private Ryan 7.5/10.

Will definitely watch Inglorious Basterds, Brad Pitt despite his many various roles, he always deliver good performance, unlike Tom Cruise, which only suits several roles (surely not WW2-related stuff).

Without commercial publishers we wouldn’t have engines to build mods and games upon. Just a thought to ground the eulogies in a dab of reality.

But i think you will agree that it is also the mods that keeps the game alive.

Microsoft's Flight Simulator series us the longest software series in "game" classification because of its numerous custom contents and modifications. The next time it releases a new edition, over 1 million purchase is a guarantee.

I bet the same for the continuation of Battlefield series. Normally, unmodded games, despite its huge success, are usually don't last that long. Casual players easily got bored. BF series have this highly moddable and brilliant concept. I praise the idea, but unfortunately the game has to accommodate the demands of all kinds of gamers. However, thanks to FH, they really exploit the concept to the full and repeatedly blaming "engine limitations" in some aspect.  ;D

I'll be the first to negative out!  ;D

This mod is too underrated! But somehow it also made it very exclusive and prestigious amongst WW2 enthusiasts and gamers alike.

Quote
Games are made to make money, and as such are usually constrained by schedules etc. IMO the quality of the content and build of FH2 blows 99% of comercially made games out of the water!

Amen to that silian, i have the same opinion too. The commercial games are made to accommodate the demands of all kinds of gamers, and also the annoying ones. The smacktards, statwhores, and so on. Despite its commercial success, off-the-shelf WW2 games like CoDs, CoHs, are only popularity poll winners, not a quality excellence. One of many examples is that you can shoot and damage Panther Tank's frontal armor with Sherman's 75mm cannon (although greatly reduced). In CoD2 they parry Crusader III Tank against Panzer II and implied that the Panzer II's gun is superior! Yet it rants about realism and authenticity, something that FH devs gentlemanly seldom brag about.

Other games' extensive amount of WW2 vehicles is just like a list from newbie-clopedia. The realism they brag about is just a show-off of resource-hogging effects. Totally lack of creativity with such amount of resources (I can see now why so many l33t gamers usually disliked major commercial game publisher).

I bought BF2 (FH2/PR), BF1942 (FH), and C&C Generals: ZH (CWC) just for the mods. FH smoked out any other WW2 games out there with the balance between realism, authenticity, and fun. CWC beats any other modern warfare RTS realism-wannabe with its mildly toned realistic 1980-1990era weaponry.

You don't really think this war is going to be won by bullets.

Of course this war isn't going to be won by dodging shell splinters.

But i criticize the way of winning "the hearts and minds" of the Afghani people. It is not like you have to overreact towards civilian casualties issues or other casualties. It is the war, and casualties are common in war as McDonald's are common in major USA cities.

Moreover, i think it has to be more like Machiavellian way in ruling Afghan than Liberalism "all fair" style. Like i said earlier, "Not so many society in world today has advanced towards the level of western people mind consciousness." Learning their languages and understanding their cultures won't help much. ISAF troops are as foreign as non-native races in western countries. Maya Lin received racial based criticism about her winning Vietnam War Memorial design because of her Asian background, despite being born in the US and a lawful US citizen. This goes as far as independent presidential candidate Ross Perot called her "egg roll" in relation to the issue. So does the "localized" ISAF troops.

I'd say the German have done the right thing. "It is ze Deutsche Bundeswehr property, we will punish every schwein who steal it!" is the message they are sending clear to the hijackers. They are telling the Taliban they are doing this seriously. Harming civilians on the way and making it a major issue or even blaming the action will cause Taliban to exploit this apparent "weakness". They should have just regretted about the civilian casualties, and leave the field commanders be.

"Next time we will continue to use civilians, because we couldn't care any less to be more gentlemen. The silly western bureaucrats really like to make a fuss over something like this!" - thinks the Taliban.

The "civilian sensitivity" attitude is too much of US' own political correctness that resounds in Europe. They say nicely about "winning the hearts and the minds of the people." Yes, especially appealing to the extreme lefts, not the moderate lefts like me. We really need to find a new way to fight insurgents that wage guerrilla warfare against a standing army like NATO forces in Afghanistan. They hide amongst civilians and use them as a shield then fire back at the "standing army" troops. It is like the enemy is wearing a top notch camouflage, while the other party is wearing "shoot me" patch, something like "I'm wearing this obviously distinctive army uniform, can't you see me?"

The war effort is hindered by many of modern day-only issues, especially the media interpretation. Casualties are common in war, just like McDonald's in US major cities. Not so many society in world today has advanced towards the level of western people mind consciousness. People in different areas have different perspective about the war.

In my country, if war struck my city, i bet some people here will chose to stay at their home and let themselves die if a delivered munitions missed its intended targets. The neighbors will only have to wait for major western media coverage after burying the victims. The emotional family relatives will certainly expressed their anger in the media, blaming the attackers for the death of their loved ones. The neighbors will then also commented, following the relative's opinion. If you were the media, you'll surely pick the angry guy one, instead of the other pacifist and calm guys. It depends on how many opposed their government regime and how many supported them. Thanks to this, it will influence the opinions of many other people.

The thing is, you have to win the war quick. The enemy know that they can't never win, they'll keep on prolonging the war, keep sending messages that they are still existing. The western way of being "nice" isn't going to place them amongst the good guys, except to their own people in their own country. Smoke the Talibans out, forget political correctness, use the civilians the mafia way into becoming your turf, then victimize yourself (e.g. Schoolgirls becoming targets, artists banned, and collaborators threatened). Show them that the benefit of becoming collaborators instead of insurgent sympathizers are greater. Bringing "politically correct" democracy to this rogue nations to idealistically "free" them is unrealistic. Training the army into adequate numbers to fight the insurgents is more unrealistic and proven to have failed, they'll end up in very poor morale and will eventually become like the Southern Vietnamese Army in Vietnam War or the Nationalist Chinese army in 1949.
