okay I know it's a bit more than 2 months late. But I just saw a report on the news concerning the royal family and I had to vent my hate.
On the 19th of June, the swedish princess Viktoria Bernadotte married Daniel Westling.
During the 6 months leading up to the wedding, all of sweden were struck by a wedding-craze.
... at least that's what the media would tell us.
There were advertisements of special "wedding items" for sale, like special plates with a picture of the princess and the soon-to-be prince on.
So much kitchy, ugly stuff.
The week before the wedding were even crazier. A festival was started in honour of the event. "Love 2010" it was called. The finale of the festival would be the wedding.
Me, working with tourism and out in the open, got first-hand contact with the craze.
Needeless to say, I was utterly disgusted.
After the procession itself, when they had been married. They paraded through stockholm in a wagon, followed by a short boat ride.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Bv8t4i-ZwSkimm through that video and you'll see what I'm talking about.
The boat they travelled with for 100 metres were rown by like 10 men from our navy. They had been training for 2 months on rowing that short strip.
Seriously, we pay taxes for our navy, and this is what they do?? if that is what our navy does, then I see it as another argument to give up our defense all together.
The day before the wedding, they had a "test run" of the route they would go in their wagon. I work in a booth just overlooking part of that route (luckily, my shift ended at the concession so quickly fled the inner city). A 50-60 year old woman came and just started chatting with me.
She: "Have they passed here already?"
Me: "Yes they passed 10 minutes ago"
She: "Oh no, I really wanted to see it. Well I'll be here tomorrow anyway.... The queen Silvia is very nice, I've talked with them once. When they rode around in a wagon before. I stood by the side of the road shouted to them. Of course they didn't respond but they were very nice and waved to me as well"
I was seriously disgusted. I didn't know wether to laugh or cry...
I was quite indifferent towards the royal family until this spring.
Sweden never were hit by a wedding-craze. That was just something the media pushed on us.
"ALL OF SWEDEN IS STRUCK BY A WEDDING CRAZE!"
"oh really? well... I didn't know that... well, if you say so..."
Thankfully, I'm not alone. This wedding really increased the opposition towards the swedish monarchy. In recent polls something like 70 % want the monarchy abolished = more than ever (thank god).
I just want to throw up when seeing the people loving the royal family so much.
I seriously want princess Victoria and Daniel to give a public excuse and ask for forgiveness for their wedding.
All buses after 7 PM in the inner city were cancelled for a week for example. This wedding cost the time of so many people, and time is money. Not only did this wedding cost 100 Million SEK (around 10 million euros, as much as the royal family costs the tax payers for a whole year), but it also cost a lot for the individual.
As I said, I was rather indifferent towards the royal family until this wedding. Now I hate them more than the plague. I get sick everytime I see something about them, and even more sick whenever I see a person saying "I love them so much! they are wonderful people".
This was the only song that ran through my ipod during that week.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPQlCAbdn48Swedish punk-song from the band Ebba Grön.
lyrics would be something like:
I hate the bourgeoisie
I hate the royal family
we will arm ourselves
yes we will arm ourselves
I swear deep from my heart
that we from the suburbs will arm ourselves
I hate prince Bertil and Carl-Gustav
I hate Sarah Leander
(and my favourite part)
They can take some lead in their necks
They can take some lead in their necks
There... I don't know how to start a discussion or anything. I just saw a report about the family on the news and really needed to vent my hate and disgust.
In conclusion:
10 million euro spent on a single day. For what? for a marriage that doesn't do anything really. The whole idea of a monarchy in a democracy is despicable. Especially as swedes tend to be so proud of being the "most democratic and modern nation in the world". Sometimes I hate swedes.
