Off-Topic / Facebook's going down November 5
« on: 10-08-2011, 02:08:24 »
Anonymous: Facebook's going down November 5

The more Facebook seems to dominate the world, the closer it seems to be to its end.

Earlier this year, there was dastardly nonsense being peddled that Facebook would shut down March 15. However, now we have news of an apparently credible threat.

It comes from Anonymous, the interesting group of people who express their principles in an activist way by infiltrating the systems of the unsuspecting or the merely complacent.

The Village Voice has pointed me to an Anonymous press release that states quite unequivocally that Facebook is going to get it on November 5.

Should that date not be dear to you, it is the day when British people let off fireworks to commemorate Guy Fawkes, a man who felt the passionate need to detonate Britain's Houses of Parliament.

For those who haven't bothered with British history (short version: a lot of colonizing, eating meat, and pretending to be friendly), you might have seen Guy Fawkes immortalized in the fine movie "V For Vendetta".

Anonymous' press release is candid to its core. It declares: "If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy."

It then offers an interesting accusation: "Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria."

There follows a hearty disquisition about how Facebook allegedly owns your information, regardless of whether you delete your account, and makes money from it.

Anonymous makes very clear which side it believes Facebook has made its bed and laid its skateboard. It says: "Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you."

I know that, for many, Facebook will represent a slightly different target than those receiving the hacktivists' attention before--such as the International Monetary Fund, News Corp., or the Iranian government.

The question, though, on the lips of many, may be why Anonymous has given Facebook notice. You may also wonder whether Facebook is quaking, whether it has taken any precautions--and whether, perhaps, in the spirit of sharing, it has reached out to Anonymous to broker some sort of truce. (The offer of a super-duper fan page, perhaps?)

I have, naturally, reached electronically in Facebook's direction, seeking answers to these prewar questions.

It will be troubling if, come November 5, your Mom can't post pictures of the twins' birthday party. Are the hacktivists more powerful than the company that allegedly espouses "hacker culture"? That might make for a very good movie.

Off-Topic / Pentagon admits suffering major cyber attack
« on: 15-07-2011, 06:07:19 »
The Pentagon has admitted it suffered a major cyber attack in which thousands of files were taken by foreign hackers.

Deputy Defence Secretary William Lynn said that in a March attack and other breaches, hackers had taken information on "our most sensitive systems".

The admission came as the Pentagon rolled out a strategy for strengthening US cyber capabilities and addressing threats and attacks in cyberspace.

The plan would treat cyberspace in a similar manner to land, air and sea.

"In the 21st Century, bits and bytes can be as threatening as bullets and bombs," Mr Lynn said, unveiling the plan.

In a speech at National Defense University in Washington, Mr Lynn said about 24,000 files containing Pentagon data were stolen from a defence industry computer network in March, marking one of the largest cyber attacks in US history.
Extracting files

He said at least one attack - a previously revealed 2008 penetration of classified computer systems - had come from a foreign intelligence service, and in an interview ahead of the speech said the Pentagon believed the March attack had been perpetrated by a foreign government.

Previous cyber attacks have been blamed on China or Russia.

Keystrokes originating in one country can impact the other side of the globe in the blink of an eye”

William Lynn Deputy Defense Secretary

"We have a pretty good idea" who did it, he told the Associated Press news agency.

In his speech, he said some of the stolen data was "mundane, like the specifications for small parts of tanks, airplanes, and submarines.

"But a great deal of it concerns our most sensitive systems, including aircraft avionics, surveillance technologies, satellite communications systems, and network security protocols," he said.

Mr Lynn said cyber attacks in the future would not only focus on stealing data but also damaging US defences or even causing deaths.

He added that virtual intruders have previously tried to extract files related to missile tracking systems and the Joint Strike Fighter.

Though nations like China and Russia have been blamed for many previous cyber attacks, the Pentagon fears terrorist groups could eventually strike American computer networks and steal data.

"Keystrokes originating in one country can impact the other side of the globe in the blink of an eye," Mr Lynn said.
'Too aggressive'

He added that information technology has become so important to the US government that it "virtually guarantees that future adversaries will target our dependence on it".

Mr Lynn said the Department of Defense Strategy for Operating in Cyberspace was defensive, countering earlier criticism that the strategy might be too aggressive.

In a release accompanying the new strategy, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said it was "critical to strengthen our cyber capabilities to address the threats we're facing".

The news comes one month after the Pentagon said it was building its own "scale model" of the internet to carry out cyber war games.

An Italian court has sentenced nine German men in absentia to life in prison for killing hundreds of civilians during World War II.

The Verona court found the defendants guilty of the murder of more than 140 people in the Modena region in 1944.

The nine, who were said to be aged in their 80s and 90s, were also convicted of massacres in other parts of northern Italy.

Three other accused died during the seven-month trial.

Seven of the nine were named in reports as Wilhelm Karl Stark, 90, then a sergeant, Ferdinand Osterhaus, 93, a second lieutenant, and Helmut Odenwald, 91, a captain, Herbert Wilke, 92, Erich Koeppe, 91 and Hans Georg Karl Winkler and Karl Friedrich Mess, who are both in their 80s.

Prosecutors said the men had been part of a German division that had tried to quash the Italian resistance by indiscriminately killing civilians in the latter stages of the war.

Wednesday evening's sentencing was attended by officials from the towns where the massacres took place as well as relatives of those killed in German attacks on mountain towns in the Italian provinces of Modena, Arezzo and Reggio Emilia in the early months of 1944.

In 2009, a 90-year-old former German infantry commander, Josef Scheungraber, was jailed for life in Munich for his role in the killing of 14 civilians in an Italian village during World War II.

Scheungraber had previously been sentenced in absentia by an Italian military court to life in prison for the killings in Falzano di Cortona, in Tuscany, on 26 June 1944.

Germany generally does not extradite its citizens without their consent.

The LulzSec hacker group today released what it describes as 54MB of source code from the Sony Computer Entertainment Developer Network as well as internal network maps of Sony BMG, while Sony Pictures Russia and Sony Music Brazil also were attacked.

"Konichiwa from LulzSec, Sony bastards!" the group wrote in a post on the Pirate Bay peer-to-peer sharing site. The message continues:

"We\'ve recently bought a copy of this great new game called \"Hackers vs Sony\", but we\'re unable to play it online due to PSN being obliterated. So we decided to play offline mode for a while and got quite a few trophies. Our latest goal is \"Hack Sony 5 Times\", so please find enclosed our 5th Sony hack. Enjoy this 54MB collection of SVN Sony Developer source code. That\'s hackers 16, Sony 0. Your move!"

Later, the post was updated to say: "ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: HACK SONY 6 TIMES! Oh damn, we just did it again, please also find enclosed internal network maps of Sony BMG." (A list of Sony hacks on the Attrition.org site lists 15 but does not include the latest LulzSec leak of Sony BMG data. LulzSec also says it hacked Sony BMG sites in Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as Sony Pictures.)

Sony representatives did not immediately respond to e-mails and calls seeking comment regarding the report.

The Sony Pictures Russia site. meanwhile, was offline this morning after reportedly being compromised using a SQL injection, according to a post in Pastebin. Pastebin is heavily used by hackers to post evidence of their hacks.

It's unclear who is responsible for the Sony Pictures Russia hack. LulzSec said in a tweet that it is not responsible for that attack.

Sony Pictures representatives did not immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment.

Suggestions / Recoilless Rifle
« on: 27-02-2011, 17:02:43 »

A recoilless rifle (RCLR) or recoilless gun is a lightweight weapon that fires a heavier projectile than would be practical to fire from a recoiling weapon of comparable size. Technically, only devices that use a rifled barrel are recoilless rifles. Smoothbore variants are recoilless guns. This distinction is often lost, and both are often called recoilless rifles
Normally used for anti-tank roles, the first effective system of this kind was developed during World War II
