Title: [F|H] & [762] & [WaW] Community Map Pack
Post by: x4fun ODIUM on 22-12-2014, 13:12:08
Dear Players,

the new [FHT] & [762] & [WaW] Community Map Pack is being played in a mixed map
rotation every day on the [762]RANKED #1 FH2+CMP [100p] server. If you need the map
pack, click the picture to download!

(https://i.imgur.com/0lPSY2C.gif) (https://files.fht.ovh/FH2CommunityUpdaterSetup.exe)

Lots of new equipment was ported into the CMP by the team and stuff fixed by Harmonikater
such as the improved Arisaka, Katana and Japanese LMG. FREMIDENIS ("Bloody Marsh") and
0utlaw have joined our force as mappers.

Now we need YOUR help again: please report your findings THERE (http://www.762-ranking.de/site/viewforum.php?f=26). As usual, each map has its own
thread for reporting bugs. The quality of the CMP will depend on the amount of support that
we can get from you players. We are only a small mapping team, so especially bug reporting
is something you can really help us with.

Your work will flow directly into your gaming fun. We can't think of a better way to include
you players in the mapping process. It will be "your" CMP, as well. All CMP maps do have 16p,
32p and 64p layers (=map sizes). Those will be selected automatically according to player numbers
at the end of the round before.

For the CMP mapping team,
x4fun I<ODIUM>I.

Yes, we have taken notes and will look into it. For the time being - good night and
enjoy your Christmas! We're not going to stop here. :)

762#2 will automatically restart after a crash so you can test as much as you like.
762#1 will run vanilla FH2 without any changes so you can enjoy FH2 without problems.

Haven't really kept up to speed with these new map packs. So I fancied some Xmas FH2 time and had a look into it.

I downloaded the mappack from the links given.

Had to download unzipping software + spyware  :o  as my Win 7 wouldn't unpack it.

Then extracted the file to bf2/mods and replaced the old fh2 folder....

Was able to have a normal game on the 762 server with the normal maps. BUT when trying to join the server running the new maps, the game told me "I did not have the map!".

In my mods/fh2/levels  folder I can see the new maps there  e.g. "fht_ai_el_agheila" "waw_carpiquet_aerodrome" etc

So why am I told that I don't have the maps?  ???

Thanks for any help.  :)

did you look inside the map folders to see if anything there.  Sometimes if you fail to extract rar properly it will still give you some mostly empty folders.  This happens if you use the wrong password for example.  BTW the password is UNITED, upper case.  The proper size of the file when extracted should be 1.68 GB.  I think 7zip is a good free program.

Yes I typed UNITED in upper case. The Unzipped mappack says it's  817,479 Kb

WinRAR works even beyond the "trial" period (if you can bear it nagging about the registration), no need to download other, possibly spyware-infested programs for the unpacking.

You should have MERGED the folders, NOT replaced (ie. unpack the "fh2" folder into the same bf2/mods folder where the regular fh2 folder is and/or unpack it somewhere else and then copy it into the bf2/mods folder and answer yes to the question about merging the folders). Answer yes to question about overwriting older versions of the files (all files in the pack are 762 specific). Though I'm surprised that you could play the game at all as deleting the vanilla files essentially removes the mod.

the bf2/mods folder and answer yes to the question about merging the folders)

Bollocks!  ::) Well I reinstalled a working fh2 folder.  Then I unzipped the mappack again using Winrar, Copied it to mods folder....I was asked to merge the folders....did that. fh2 is now 7.88 GB

Loaded the game up. Tried to join the 762 server running the map pack.. "you do not have the map the server is running!"  >:(

ffs  ....well I tried.  Guess FH2 is finished for me :'(

Edit* Seems the other players on the non map pack 762 server have the same problems...they've also tried to install the map pack without success.

I can't see what I've done wrong though. I've followed the instructions to the letter, and I've downloaded the map pack from 3 different hosts and tried to install (merge) them each in turn into a fresh fh2. But the 762 keeps saying I don't have the map they're running..when I know damn well I do..........

Shame this couldn't have been done as an auto update?  :-\

"tournament server"?   That might be the wrong server and thus some different version of a map.  This pack is on [762] Ranked #2 CMP ONLY [100p].  Other servers have who knows what on them.  If you can't get on this server you might go to http://www.762-ranking.de/site/ for more help.  They have guys on their TS channel that could walk you through it if necessary.

Hey Capten,

download the pack from the sources in this post:
http://www.762-ranking.de/site/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=183

Make sure the game is not running.

Best option is the torrent file, that definitely works.
Unpack the .rar file onto your desktop using WINRAR.
PW: UNITED

Cut out the "fh2" folder that you have just unpacked.
Go into your FH2 installation folder (C:\...EAGames\Battlefield2\mods\
(NOT into your "My Documents" folder, that is just for config files and screenshots.)
Paste the "fh2" folder into this mods folder NEXT to the existing fh2 folder.

Replace/overwrite/integrate: yes, yes, yes.
Play the game.

If there are still problems, contact us on Teamspeak/skype.
We can walk you through or help you via screenshare.

We are working on a launcher but we have to make one from scratch,
so it takes some time.

go to the map where ur battlefield 2 is installed then click on mods -> then click fh2 -> then levels and paste the downloaded maps in there, i guess that should do the trick

No just do it exactly as I described in my last post.
Just put the WHOLE "fh2" folder from your download into your \mods folder.

Nothing else. It contains not only the levels but also equipment. That is why you need the whole folder.

I had the same problem and it was in the password.

I typed lower case united and got error messages but still it would install the file. when joining the server I had the same as these guys.

Strange thing ofcourse is that it is possible to unpack and copy with the wrong password. Do not know if this is also the problem for these guys.

So please make sure you used CAPS for the PASSWORD!!!!!!!

Thanks Odium.

I tried all 3 download links from that page you linked (except the torrent).

I used the password UNITED

I moved the fh2 folder to the mods folder where the existing fh2 folder was, and was asked to merge them, yes yes yes, did that.

Now, only thing I haven't tried is the torrent. I'm pretty thick when it comes to this stuff. I don't understand what a torrent is.  :-[

I click on it and it downloads a 16kb file to my PC. Now from there on..... like this guy I'm lost!? (http://youtu.be/myhnAZFR1po?t=3m50s)

How do I download the thing from the torrent?  ???

Back later, thanks!  :)

Before you do anything more Capten, could you copy the
address line (path) of the target folder, where you
installed your mappack to? e.g. C:\Program Files\...
Also as PM if you don't wanna do it publicly.
It seems you might be installing to the wrong folder.

First you go to http://www.utorrent.com (further reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTorrent)
Download the free version, install the programme.
Download the CMP torrent file here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/3lu4hhebw4wjk2v/%5BFHT%5D%20%26%20%5B762%5D%20%26%20%5BWaW%5D%20Community%20Map%20Pack.rar.torrent?dl=0)
Execute the downloaded torrent file, utorrent will start.
You connect to the other torrent users (e.g. me) and start your download.
If you keep your utorrent running after your download is complete,
you will help to distribute the CMP (you can limit the upload speed to avoid
ping problems while playing).

Unpack with UNITED password, try the above routine of installing again.

@Erwin & Dutch, thank you for letting me know.
I have checked the torrent and done the first complete seed myself,
so it is a working file. If you have corrupt files from the Torrent download,
please re-download it again.

If you have used one of the DropBox / Website downloads and gotten corrupted
files, please let me know which link you used, so I can take it down.

I install the fh2 folder to:
E:\EA GAMES - Battlefield 2 folder\Battlefield 2\mods

Incidentally, as weird as it looks like that, I have not renamed it "Battlefield 2 folder" ( but it is named like that). I take it that the FH2 updater did this a while back?  ???

Just in case..I have a fresh fh2 folder in the mods folder ready to go. In the same mod folder I have bf2 and xpack folder.

I reinstalled FH2 yesterday as I moved the game to a seperate and smaller partition on my hard drive, had a few minor hassles with the installation files installing to the a different folder within BF2 only a minor thing to watch out for.
My main reason for posting is after the installation of 2.46 part 1 & 2 there was an unexpected update when I opened the FH2launcher. It was around 800 MBs.
I've found nothing in the forums regarding this. Map pack maybe??
Any heads up?
Thanks.

Panza, you have installed it correctly into THAT folder.

Try to go upwards from there until you see Fh2.exe and try to start the game from the FH2.exe
(Not from the launcher). See what it does, can you join 762#2 now?

If that works, the launcher uses a DIFFERENT installation folder.
So you need to find that DIFFERENT folder that the launcher uses and put the CMP into it.

That is all I could think of right now.

Hello Panza

It is normal to have folders inside a map folder, this is how maps work. If you have a program such as winrar, you can unzip them there and be ready to edit them in Bf2 Editor, if you like. Of course do this in a backup. :)

Going back to your main problem, just drag and drop the "fh2" (the mappack one) next to your main fh2 folder (also it will ask you for a password - UNITED). It should work!

Ok ok you are right ! This is the problem ! Thanks !
It's ok but now when i try to connect me, fh crash systematically at the end of the loading. When i reached 100 %, at the moment or has to appear "join server", fh crash !
Usually my fh often crash, although i have "disable desktop composition" on the good fh2.exe, but now it's systematically at the end of load and only with cmp maps, i tried with old maps and it work, but cmp maps no.

edit : When i create a server it work ! But with 762 server don't work !

So far so good, Panza. It seemed to be the same problem that Capten had,
you may have 2 installation folders of FH2 on your PC. Make sure you install
the mappack into the exact folder that the FH2LAUNCHER uses.

Please also check that you have a folder called "waw_fht_762_obj" in your \mods\fh2 folder.

Inside that "waw_fht_762_obj" folder, it must look like this:

If that is not the case, please redownload the CMP, unpack with UNITED again,
and copy the COMPLETE unpacked "fh2" folder into your \bf2\mods folder again.

Good luck. If that does not work you can call me on Skype,
I can watch what you are doing via screenshare and try to
help you out (if you want). You have a PM with my Skype
contact data.

Best Regards,
Odium.

Dear developers!

I wish you Happy Holidays Foremost! Thanks for the update to my favorite game, but I regret that I can not as a regular user of your joy to share among you because you do not know the updates included in the target folder. This would not be a problem, but currently only the new server is running maps to life. I was reading the forum I ask, why do you not know that as an automatic update made available. You're playing right now, those of us who can not be integrated into the "breast-'. I ask you to fill up with images attached to the forum thread installation.

Thank you.

Yes, the FHT server has Punkbuster running, which forces you to click 2x to join.
If your PB is outdated, it may even kick you. We tried to set it up as a backup server,
but apparently it still needs some tweaking.

The problem with the root server of the DGC (the clan where the 762 game servers
run on) is that it seems to have beem under maintenance for several days now. The
"connection problems" occur regardless of player numbers, despite restarts of
the game server, restarts of the root server, they appear on stock FH2 maps (#1)
on CMP maps (#2) and even without the 762 Ranking activated (Test Server #3).

That is how we know it is nothing on the players' side nor is it connected to the
FH2 mod or the CMP maps. We will see what we can reach with the server company.
Sorry about that.

[...]What i dont like on map Wastwall is that it isnt push map and there is 10 of flags on huge map and you cant control every.

Which is exactly why this map was chosen/asked for. We were tired of running the same gauntlet,
the same pre-described path, being hemmed in between crossed flags and red death zones.
Being guided like cattle to the slaughterhouse in the exact way the map designer wanted us to run.
Not everyone wants to play Brest or Falaise Pocket in their variations all the time.

Maps like Westwall bring back one of many aspects that made Battlefield and Forgotten Hope 0.7 unique:
That you the player are not relieved of thinking. Still on bleed? Look at the map, do the counting (it's
is not even real math) and capture the needed number of flags. Only big 8 man squads sitting at flags,
with half of the men doing nothing? Use your brains, form small assault squads, capture the needed flags,
win the map.

As opposed to some (!) developers who thought/still think that the players "do not know what they want"
and "what can be fun" (even if opinions may differ), we do believe that players who are grown up people,
value the freedom of movement and a choice on how to win a map. So we deliberately picked some (!)
maps without push code.

Those are bleed assets.  If you cap 4 flags and then switch teams you can play with them on local.
There are a mere 7 flags on the map BTW.  Become a squad leader and coordinate with other squads for a successful strategy.

I can agree with you ODIUM,but still isnt realy in real life.It can be fun but there isnt enought players to acomplish that.

So i need to have 4 flags of 7 of them and then they/me on oposite side will get that assets?

Yep.  You have to make the team bleed to spawn it's bleed asset.  It may be on 2 minute delay as well.

7 flags on map is way too many... WW2 conflict was about massive clashes, not tactical "SPEC OPS" engagement, what some people in our community think like it was lately...

This post was cut and moved to the other thread but this is how I feel about the map pack.

My opinions on the map-pack; It's a nice effort :) I truly appreciate all the time these mappers put into these maps and most of all the effort spent by the 762/FHT/WAW guys to test them out and compile them all to be released as one. It's no easy task, believe me.

The same old FH2 maps in rotation are always going to get a bit stale from time to time so it's nice that these guys put this together to give us a bit of fresh air. I admit that it's refreshing to play something new now and then to get out of the old routine.

As for the maps themselves, they're just not my taste. I tend to hold many of the same sentiments that TS does, so I much prefer the play style of the FH2 originals than the new maps that came out. That's not to say that there aren't a few good maps in the bunch. :) St Mere Eglise, Herrilsheim (Orsholtz) and Etna Line have some very promising layouts, and maps like Brecourt have a lot of interesting gameplay ideas. There's actually a good bit of promise in a few of these maps, and it'd be nice to see them expanded upon properly with some guidance one day.

Mostly for me tho FH is about more than it's gameplay. A large part of FH2 is it's immersion factor imo. The amount of time spent on research, custom statics, custom vehicles, skins, etc.... that's what makes FH2 the ultimate WW2 game for me. There's so much care put into the atmosphere of a map and it's just as much about how it looks as how it plays.
Many of these custom maps obviously don't have that same amount of time and effort put into their atmosphere. (not to say they tried and failed, just to say that it wasn't a priority) and so there's no real immersion factor in those maps like there is in the official ones.

I'd say 60-70% of why I play FH2 is to feel like I'm a part of that battle that took place and truly immerse myself into the history of it. And so many of the FH2 maps allow me to do that 8) so in the end that's why I'd prefer the old ones to the custom ones.

Thanks to the people that put this together tho, these maps aren't for me but there's no doubt they bumped the player base a bit and added some new interest in a mod that's had a bit of a 'lull' in releases ;) and that's NEVER a bad thing imo.

I hope the best thing that can come out of this map pack is some hype for the future of FH2 and maybe even if we're lucky, one of these mappers with one of the better maps can get some guidance and turn it into the next Mt Olympus 8)

I stopped trying to care too much about realism in FH2 when it became apparent that "realistic" is one soldier armed with a spawnable G43 can not only lay down 5 S-mines all by himself (realism), but that it only takes 1.3 seconds to deploy an S-mine (realism) and he can throw these out of upstairs windows into downstairs doorways (realism) where enemy soldiers (who have shovels and knives, which are historically S-mine antidotes) have no way to remove them unless they happen to have a wrench handy. Oh, and his 4 other buddies also with spawnable G43s are doing the same thing, so good fucking luck getting inside that house.

As for the custom maps, I like them and I try to be careful not to unfairly shit on anything someone made with dozens/hundreds of ours of their spare time. Neither do I mind a few weird maps like Westwall (a billion flags spread out over a wide area with no push code) because as much I usually have a boner for push maps and hate hate hate the idea a "realistic war" includes one guy in a jeep who has a really fast computer capping a flag 8 miles behind our front line because we just happened to have a lot of people on piss breaks before the next map stars. But if we already have 25 maps that follow the same general strategy, a few weird ones here and there to mix it up I can live with. We all have our own little notions about what should and shouldn't be represented in the mod so maybe no one else has a problem with this kind of thing at all. The biggest thing this map pack has reminded me is how I long for every flag in the mod to require 2 men to capture it.

I also saw WaW Battle of Britian map which is nice designed, but i assume a lot of that is taken from FH1. I also saw there Heinkel He 111 and Doiner Do 17(or is it Junker 88) which are german medium bomber and  can be in use in FH2(also saw Mosquito british). This two map are what realy imprest me and can be taken seriously.

Immersion - 8 out of 10 people doesn't care...

Nobody stops there to check out "Oh there is a nice bed with historical details" or "look at the trees, it's the same from that time."

What you need is a fast gameplay, where you can deploy more than ONE strategy, where you can attack everywhere you want or take a jeep and charge through the back flags. That's how good this game is and that's why it still has 200 core players who are refusing to quit after all the screw ups that has been done since the first release. We had the perfect thing with FH1, this is a new, clumsy engine which I think is not suitable for this game in the first place. But since we're 8 years into progress, there is no going back from it, we have to squeeze as much as we can from this.

Hey Natty, you back?

I play this game mostly because of the historical accuracy, which you so nicely portray with the example of a bed  ::)

But I must be some pathetic exception, right?  :-X

What you need is a fast gameplay, where you can deploy more than ONE strategy, where you can attack everywhere you want or take a jeep and charge through the back flags.
Then I wonder why you still play this game, because there are tons of other games which have this, but don't have what you call
1) a clumsy engine
2) "all the screw ups" (nice qualification of the dev's work btw)

Yeaaa I'd say it's a bit more than that. ;) Otherwise things like this wouldn't exist:

http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=16099.0 (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=16099.0)

and the devs wouldn't painstakingly recreate many of their maps with 100% custom statics at 1:1 scale. It's why I love this mod and I hope the devs never stop sharing this sentiment with me.

What is a "good" map anyway? Because.. I personally consider a good map one that I can immerse myself in and therefore can't stand maps with poor lightmapping, shitty static placement, buggy terrain and whatnot (i.e. many tournament maps). That is part of the reason I dislike most of these "good" maps and don't care if someone claims they have a "superior" gameplay. I'm not trying to shit on the effort put into those maps, however, to me most of them look the same and ironically also play the same (large maps, flags hundreds of meters apart, you can go to any flag without being within a reach of another flag's defense.. PR much? Sure, you can attack any flag from almost any direction and that I guess is "good gameplay", but when it comes at the cost of art design.. I'll pass.

Some feedback from the maps. It wouldn't let me register on the 762 forums so I'll just post it here. It's in several spoilers in order not to clutter up the post:

El Agheila
Spoiler
Played this map once as the Brits. The Italians didn't manage to advance past the first line of defence. I suggest that the Outpost flag should be opened up a bit. At the moment it's very tightly packed and the entrances are both blocked from tanks. The flag zone is difficult to get to and this creates a situation where the Axis just end up camping and shelling the flag, which is frustrating for both sides, especially when the Brits spawn basically right in the open. Remove the tank traps and move the walls farther away from the camp.
Kefalonia
Spoiler
I have very mixed feelings about this map. It has interesting game mechanics but there something in the map that just doesn't feel right. First of all, the map has a lot of unused space and especially mountain in the middle seem to go to waste, as people just go in circles along the coast lines. The classic conquest works well, because once you cap one flag you usually have only one or two choices on where to go next.

What really bothers me is how the towns are designed. They are very maze-like, with completely arbitrary and randomly based buildings. You have a lot of situations where the corner of a house is right next to the wall of another house and you don't have any logical roads or street network in the town. Overall, with the odd house placement the towns' layouts look like they've been drawn by a child instead of actually putting effort into thinking (or referencing) how an actual town would be built.

The Japanese landing craft really break immersion (I understand they are there because nothing else is available).
Operation Nordwind
Spoiler
The main problem with Nordwind is the large number of flags and their completely random placement. Especially the Village flag is completely useless and most of the time both teams advance in pretty much identical fashion (which is good, it's just that the Village flag breaks the thing). Usually the Axis capture the Bunker, Allies the Estate and then they both continue into the town.

This is how I would change the structure of the map:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa215/Niko2-0/Randomness/minimap_zpsa4b6d19d.jpg~original) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/Niko2-0/media/Randomness/minimap_zpsa4b6d19d.jpg.html)

Remove the Village flag completely and expand the map horizontally. Move the Axis base to the Northwest, while the American base goes Southwest. This way you can still have free conquest but the battle gets a much more logical order without pointless running around.

In addition, a lot of the flag zones are really closed up and getting into them requires the player to circle around the flag to find and entrance (sometimes quite far away). The player should be able to get to the capping zone without much fuffing around and it should feel intuitive.
Carpiquet
Spoiler
This is a map reminds me a bit of Luttich, which isn't a bad thing at all. All I'd do is move the two edge flags closer to the Airfield (just slightly) and open up the flag zones a bit. Also, the roads to the flags need to be a lot clearer, especially Authie tends to act like its own little closed fortress
Argentan
Spoiler
This is probably my favourite map of the bunch. The only thing that really bothers me is the aesthetics. The towns outline is basically a big square with houses acting as walls. The town itself is fun to fight in but the edges should be broken up a bit (especially in the north). My second problem is with the massive crater at the Captured AT Position flag. You have a massive hole right in the middle of the thing but somehow all the buildings and walls around are completely intact. So either remove the crater or make the buildings look somewhat destroyed.

Train Station's cap zone seems a bit odd. You can cap the flag from inside the multi storey house next to it but in order to get inside the house you have to do this weird loop from behind the building.
Sidi Muftah
Spoiler
Only played this map a couple of minutes. Only thing I can say is that the British base should be moved a bit further away from the Italian positions so that the Italians have a bit more time to prepare.
Catania
Spoiler
This map is just a bunch of flags stuck in a circular pattern with a completely arbitrary (and badly chosen) push code. In addition, it looks fucking hideous. Just burn this map in hellfire and never speak of it again.
General
Spoiler
As a general note, a lot of the maps have problems with oddly designed flag zones. Most of them are too closed up and require quite a lot of work and running around to get into the actual cap zone itself.

I feel that a lot of maps have too many pick up kits which creates a situation where the kits don't feel special or necessary anymore. It also renders a lot of the other equipment less intimidation when you have kits that can counter them lying about pretty much everywhere.

@fmlrommel: The Server with the mappack has reached nearly 100 players several times during the last 4 weeks. It feels most of the players (or atleast the players, who usually "start" the server") have had enough of the new maps. After an absence the official maps and different mapstyles felt refreshing again.

I personally hope the 762 admins to start a new mixed rotation on one of the servers soon.

@fml it is actually just copying a fh2 folder (your DL) into your /mods folder.
Normally no repairs should be needed.

The FH2 developers decided that since these maps are not original FH2 content
they will not be distributed with the FH2 launcher, which is their good right.

We will try to provide a launcher for automatic installation of the next issue of the CMP.
Normally if you read the instructions on www.762-ranking.de it should not be that hard.
Let us know if you need further help.

At the moment it is not possible to mix CMP maps with the stock FH2 maps (yet).
The server 762#2 is up and running 24/7 with ranking, you are welcome to play
and give us your feedback about the maps (what to fix, etc.).

With all due respect, Odium, the actual reply of the FH2 developers was not a whim, as it may sound in the quote above, it was about technical limitations:
1. The launcher does not have built-in support for distributing custom map packs (in other words, it can install updates only from a single source).
2. The alternative option of making the pack a part of the official releases would make those maps "official" too, with all the consequences of that status.

Can I offer you the installation script which has worked well for distributing a couple of other map packs - Singleplayer patches for FH 2.45 (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=19022.0) and FH2: Forgotten Maps (SP/COOP) (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=20003.0)? The script is rather simple, nothing fancy, but it withstood thousands of downloads without a single "How to install this thing?" issue reported here on the forum.

Hi Gomerpyle,

the FH2 Community Updater will update itself. This will happen when you launch the Updater.
If it fails, check if your Firewall or Antivirus blocks the update.

The updater will, after it has successfully launched, also notify you, if one of the available
extras to FH2 (CMP, texture pack, FHT, ...) is due for an update.

If you check for repairs and it tells you to repair, then that normally refers to one of
the extras to FH2, not the updater itself.

On another note:

Dear Players,

we have made some fixes to the Community Map Pack to try and reduce the server/client crashes.
There will be a test event so see how the changes have taken effect on Sunday 18.00 UTC.

Please join us on Server [762]#1 at that time!

Dear players,

as of now, server [762]RANKED #1 is running FH2.52 with the [FHT] & [762] & [WaW]
Community Map Pack sprinkled in between.

If you need the CMP map pack, please download it from the NEWS section of the [762] forum.

If you already have the CMP installed but still get errors, please run your Community Updater, mark the
CMP, then "Check for updates" or "Repair". That should update your installed CMP in any case.

Regards,
x4fun I<ODIUM>I.

P.S. If you dislike the CMP, feel free to use [762]RANKED #2 server, it will remain on FH2.52 unaltered.
More importantly, please give us your feedback here in the forums, maybe we can use it to improve the CMP.

Ts4ever, i watched your videos and there are really some bad maps in CMP and you are right in your comments. I also would suggest CMP guys just to take 10 maps, mostly pacific and italy as offical fh2 doesnt have it, and polish it up. Now can you please look all maps in cmp and put them in these categories and tell us:

- Very good (maps that are good concept and design and with more work could be near or same as offical maps)
-Good (maps that are not bad and have potencial but they went wrong way and need heavy work)
- Bad ( not concept not design are near good, looks like fast made tornament maps, better start from scratch again)

Of course some other dev can also tell his opinion.
P.S. I dont want to make 'fight' bettwen two sides, just want to see what are differences betwen good/bad maps which can be usefull for mappers as comparation(from devs point of view)

While it is always a good idea to divide a very large work package into smaller, easier to handle packages (in this case working first on the best maps and then moving on to the ones which require more work), you're going to have a hard time having people agree on what's a good map and what's a bad map.

I personally love Aserafimov's map and some of the FH1 Pacific ports, but loathe the vanilla Battlefield 1942 ports, which are on the other hand very popular among public players.  :-\  If you have watched Ts4ever's videos you'll know how technically speaking Operation Cobra is not a very good map, yet people love it due to the huge amount of tanks.

time to play the CMP maps and give us constructive feedback. Even if we can't realize it

Title: Current State of the CMP
Post by: x4fun ODIUM on 28-10-2016, 14:10:20
Dear Players,

so far we have managed to improve the stability of the CMP somewhat. The frequent crashes have ceased.
Now we need to decide where to focus our work. The next campaign at FHT is upcoming and many of our
mappers are working on that, too. We cannot fix and polish all maps which are currently in the CMP.

Generally speaking, we need more manpower. That is why for the moment, we have reviewed
our map pool and decided to take some of the maps out of the pool on [762]RANKED #1 Server.

Battle of Salerno - quarantine - will be reworked and back soon, the mapper is unhappy with its current state.
Bloody Gulch - out - colourful, nice terrain, hedges, countryside. But in need of redesign.
Breakthrough at Cassino - out - Interesting terrain and potential, but we lack a mapper to polish/rework it.
Carpiquet Aerodrome - out - Interesting scenario and countryside, but atm we have no mapper to give it a rework.
Garrigliano Crossing - quarantine - currently being reworked and until then removed due to request of the mapper.
Gothic Line - out - working but atm too large, either redesign or generally working better in campaign. Considering options.
Hill 262 - quarantine - generally working but has some flaws in need of repair. Will be back soon.
Kasserine Pass - out - working but atm too large, either redesign or generally working better in campaign. Considering options.
Ortona - out - interesting concept of big city map but needs performance check and redesign.
PACIFIC Adak Island - out - generally not a beauty to look at, even if historically correct. Needs rework.
Vosges Mountains - out - map with lots of potential but in need of a rework (concept/push/maybe terrain).

Now for you players - please comment how you feel about this! If you are interested in
learning to map a FH2 level, this is your opportunity. We can offer you advice and some
guidance + a friendly (mostly :) ) and constructive atmosphere where you can try yourself
at fixing older maps and polishing those maps that are in need of a rework. It is a good
way start small and observe how other mappers work before you dive in at the deep end.

Go here to comment or reply:
http://www.762-ranking.de/site/viewtopic.php?f=26&p=6091#p6091

If you want to enlist in the Community Map Pack project (you decide how much time
you are willing to spend) - this is your chance.

For the CMP team,
x4fun I<ODIUM>I.

I guess that can be a usefull devblog no matter what CMP future plan is. If any maps will be really beneficial to the mod, those will be Eastern Front maps. Our of 45 stock maps, only 4 include Russians so far and there is a load of Eastern Front statics already available for potencial mappers out there.  ;)

Atm it works like this: the CMP profits from the maps that are being made for the campaigns
in the tournaments - and from special interests of single mappers.

That is how we got the Africa, Europe and lately the Pacific maps.
The next FHT campaign will feature the Pacific theatre.

Maybe after that, in half a year's time, there may be another one.
If that is planned to contain Eastern Front maps, it could be possible
that the CMP will get EF maps.

The best contact for that question is Papillon, he is in charge of the FHT Campaign planning.
The Tutorial would be useful definitely. Maybe a rogue mapper is willing
to try and make a map in the meantime. Then he would have a guide to start with.

actually, Russia.
We do have a backlog with 20%-80% maps there, all of them FI-RU Continuation war maps, some of which were donated by keimummy, some of them long-running projects of Matsku:
- Ilomantsi
- Sinimaed
- Invasion of Tornia
- Strongpoint Joki
- Njietjärvi

So yes, tutorials are always appreciated.

I long wanted to create some vid tutorials about the technical how-tos when creating a map, like terrain import from real-life sources, texturing with Photoshop, map setup in the editor, UG, OG, Roads, Lightmaps, ladida you name it.
I just don't find the time to do it....

^Pap I would actually LOVE that. There's not a lot of easy to find in-depth tutorials about the technical aspects of BF2 editor out there. They're scattered around the internet between the PR and FH2 forums. And the really good technical ones are accessed by web archive of the BF Editor forums.

texturing with Photoshop, map setup in the editor, UG, OG, Roads, Lightmaps

That would be really, really helpful. When I was looking for documentation on how to map, I did find quite a bit about design, static placement, heightmap importing, etc. but I found the areas you mentioned a bit lacking in terms of up to date tutorials.

The layout of last FHT campaign could be kept, it was properly balanced imho.

What we need is someone willing to clean up the town, polish the map, add some forested area
to cover the main bases, etc.

I really like the mappack but some maps need optimizations,

You should try some things like this:

For Urban maps like Metz (init.con) :

renderer.globalStaticMeshLodDistanceScale 0.5
renderer.globalBundleMeshLodDistanceScale 0.5
renderer.globalSkinnedMeshLodDistanceScale 0.5

For destroyed or Bombed terrain, cliff (tmp.con):

terrainCuller.baseCellSize 256 or 128 or 64 if it takes too much ressources

But it avoids terrain lod morphing .... very frustrating when you try to shoot a guys hidden into bomb crater. Plus the terrain texture will look better ;)

In the past week I have experienced two ctds while the server was loading a CMP map. The map loaded 100%, but in the end it crashed.

Event 1:
Played Goodwood and Giarabub fine. Then Wake came up: ctd.

Event 2:
Played Luttich fine and when Argentan came up: ctd.

My CMP updater looks like this:

The error message I get when finishing loading a CMP map looks like this:

I tried downloading and extracting the maps manually, reinstalling the CMP Updater, switch off virus protection. All to no avail, the results remain as above.

Any ideas?

Forwarded it to the CMP skype group, thx.
If you manually download the CMP make sure that the levels are in their own folder
and not in a separate subfolder. So please check that you include the CMP levels in the proper
"height" in the game folder structure.

The 233 error normally says that your game files don't match the server files.
So I'm guessing something went wrong with manually extracting the levels folders
that you just downloaded manually.

Normally 1mbit dl speed is usual. Make sure that your Firewall or AV is not blocking

OK, when I extracted them I first put them in a newly made folder called "CMP setup" or something and then cut all folders from the levels folder into the fh2 levels folder. It then asked if I wanted to replace all files and I clicked "Yes" so I guess the location is correct.

I just tried it again and extracted the cmp.zip on my desktop. I did the same as before: I pasted the folders into my mods/fh2 folder and it asked again if I should replace all existing files with the same name. I pressed "Yes" but I can't see if it works right now because the server is running Ramelle ;)

I'll report back later.

Did that, had first signs of success, where it went up to 1 mb/s. Then the same problem again. I'm currently stuck at 2% completion and a download rate of 2-3 kb/s.  ::)

If your updater is still not working, you can also try this link, but then you have to install
the CMP manually (extract it, then copy the levels folders into the respective spot in your
BF2 installation folder).

https://files.fht.ovh/cmp.zip

We still urge players to use the updater and try to make it work, since it shows available updates
and helps to seed/share the CMP with other players. Bandwith for uploading is adjustable, so it does
not hamper the gaming experience.

Oh hey. Great to see interest, the river is Metz right now makes a huge problem with pacing, especially for pubgaming. I had an idea to solve that but it needs a lot of time and ingenuity to solve, something to do with pushcode. Now, odium just wants to see it polished with some bugs fixed but that's not really enough in my opinion. And I only have standards for gameplay.

Is this the right place to post to discuss our thoughts on the CMP?

Usually I don't really like playing custom maps, but there have been some nice surprises in the server recently.  Particularity, I really enjoy the Invasion of the Philippines map, it brings back a lot of BF1942/FH1 nostalgia, it looks nice, it's very unique. Just a lot of fun. I think Battle Isle is quite good too (is this just a generic Pacific battle? Either way it's quite fun). Tulagi is also beautifully done, maybe it's just that sunset but it's a cool experience.

On the lesser side, I think I'll log off next time Bombing the Reich and the POW raid maps come up.

Thank you for the feedback, Pyjama.

Philippines is being worked on by 0utlaw, but may take more time to complete.
The massed air battles are not everyone's cup of tea, the POW map Cabantuan is
GeoPat's project. If you send him thoughts about how to improve it, he will surely
appreciate it.

Tulagi is pr0z4c's work, BattleIsle1944 is mainly Papillon's work (he helps out on all
other maps, too, when our junior mappers need assistance).

For my part, I think there are some really interesting maps in the CMP, such as Argentan, Battle of Salerno better in PUSH mod though), Bloody Gulch (better with Push), Bloody Marsh (Better with push), Brecourt Manor (better in PUSH mod), Etna line ( with tickets problem resolved when all flags captured by US), Orsholtz Switch, Sidi Muftah and Ste-Mère-Eglise. On the Pacific theater I like Tarawa even if there's the problem of balanced gameplay.

I don't really like the FH1 conversion even if it's fun to have 50 planes in the air in a gigantic mess (Bombing the Reich and Dover one) because I think the main difference between FH1 and FH2 is the realistic approach of mapping. FH1s'maps are fun and somewhat representative of the region of the battle, FH2 are built to be accurate even if the scale is not 1:1. And I really really appreciate that work from the devs.

Finally, I said there was the balanced gameplay problem on Tarawa, let me explain my thought.
In WW2, there were hundreds of soldiers and vehicles at the same time on the battlefield (especially during a landing operation) the defenders were entrenched and often less in number than the invaders. In FH2, and every games for now, the game model is asking you to have 50 against 50 or 32 against 32, there is no place for assymetrical warfares and that's the problem with Tarawa in my opinion. I played it 6 times I think, 4 times the US captured the HQ (last flag far right) by a SL piloting a warbird that intentionally crash landed to be able to bypass the coastal defenses, the other 2 times were actual squads heroicaly made their way at the pier or at the southwestern emplacement.

Overall, CMP is adding to the game, new theater, new enjoyable maps but often are less detailed, less polished (but hey... I tried twice to make a map with BF editor, I know it's hard, and long) but mainly, I don't really like the FH1 conversions maps and I would appreciate the conversion of most of the maps to the PUSH mode and to be balanced without interfering with realism (Tarawa is really well done, a nice job!)

Anyway, thank you to the community to let us enjoy these maps and to add content!

BIG THUMB UP

The Battle of Tulagi was a land battle in the Pacific theatre of war. The battle was fought between the forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the United States Marine. The battle took place during the inital Allied landings in the Guadalcanal campaign. I am kinda cynical about this, since the FH1 version was not that good.

In the FH1 version they had flame-throwing Shermans and Fletchers bombarding you, while the Air force was helpless.

Alert: its IMO
and mostly about pacific
- removing battleships and heavy bombers from game  as they cant be represent well as strategic assets. Midway would be more interested if there instead battleships be 4 destroyers and 1 sub and PT boat for each side(also woud get more balanced ship to ship fights). And even medium bombers should be so restricted as to spawn only 1 or 2 times whatever map it is
- making turning of destroyers little harder so subs can fire from distance, and maybe even little lover speed of destroyers
-make torpedo more deadly
- Make only one or two ships have radar which covers even larger area but with slow turning rate of radar
- make hidroplanes be recconises planes/ can have mashineguns, but ad that driver on right click can look below plane
- more history acurate asset choise, like with Etna line-remove G43 or similar. IMO I would prefer historic accurate assets than trying make balance
-Also I would include in CMP mostly only Italian and Pacific campaign maps as FH2 doesnt cover that areas with exeptions like Sidi Muftah,BoB or really really uniqe maps (people dont want more European or African maps as FH2 covers that and you should bring refresh to FH2)

Again IMO,open for discussion
(Maybe too much work for little team)

I 100% agree with this. Some maps are simply boring, as they don't bring anything new and fresh, visually nor gameplay wise. I'm not even talking about maps that looks WIP or are bugged in some ways (substandard to FH2 stock maps). Many of them simply don't have that potential Pacific Front  has, and since it will never be a part of the official development, I think that's an area where CMP should focus. I would not mind seeing custom Eastern Front maps too.

Ahhh. Some One could say the same about some old stock maps. But why? I dont get the point

CMP has been running just fine for some time. Most players have the map pack and its very refreshing to play a bigger palette of maps with +80 players.

The only maps I sometimes dont feel like playing are the ported stock 1942 maps. They are well made, but its like watching the first starwars again and agian. I rather Load up bf1942 and play Wake etc.. and its fun :-)  Why were these copy maps ported into fh2 cmp ?

I don't think all the maps are fully complete in terms of suitability for Pubbie play.  Ah, the chaotic, non-strategic play of the mob.  It takes skill to get the design right when converting a tournament map (as many were originally) to a map for Pubbie play.  I like the variety of the maps.  The "sameness" could be said of so many vanilla maps we have played hundreds of times.  I don't see the size of the download as being too bad for people these days, either.  Heck, I stopped using my 56K dial-up months ago.

A new theater of operations has been made available to the community.  Porting to the old BF1942 / FH1 maps was a means to the end.  Their conversion was easiest to get to the Pacific theater fast.  Mappers have access to the new Pacific theater mod to create new scenarios, although there is still work on more equipment for the mod.  I think that was the greatest contribution to the community for years.

Hi,
First of all, in terms of copyright: Everybody can make a minimod for FH2 and release it, as long as it does not contain copyrighted material from other developers and as long as it requires a valid installation of Forgotten Hope 2 to run.

So Pacific maps + assets etc. from bf1942 is not copyrighted from other developers ?

I'm not sure what you mean. BF1942 content is fair game (afaik) considering FH2 uses their voices. The other assets that the CMP uses are bought and paid for from various sources on the internet. OR they've gotten permission to use them from the people who made them.

Dear Players,

our mappers have been hard at work to fix up the maps of the

[FHT] & [762] & [WaW] Community Map Pack.

Before we include the new version into the main server rotation on [762]RANKED #1 server,
we need you to help us test it, to find and report bugs! (errors, bugs, crashes, ...)

You can join us by:

  • DOWNLOADING the BETA by using your COMMUNITY UPDATER (https://files.fht.ovh/FH2CommunityUpdaterSetup.exe)

  • joining [762]#3 for the public play test.
  • leaving your feedback, as before, in this subforum. (http://www.762-ranking.de/site/viewforum.php?f=26)
The old public CMP release has been removed from [762]#1 Server to avoid conflicts.
In case we are planning test nights, we will inform you here in the news.

Thank you for your support!

Everyone needs to run and update their Fh2 Community updater app and check all the new stuff out, and let us know what they think!  See you on server 3!

I've asked Harmonikater about this, his reply was:

"Harmonikater
if no addon is installed theres nothing to update
he should get those buttons active by clicking one of the available addons and then selecting install"

Hope that helps you, if not, PM me on 762 please.
I don't check my PMs here so often. Or add me on skype, that would be the fastest way to contact me.

Tip: maybe make it more clear that it works this way, by highlighting the text of the add-ons, or a short description in the updater main screen?

Nice seeing you in the forums.  Hope to see you online soon.  Any plans at WaW to have another campaign?  I tried F|H, but Fridays don't work well for me because I'm not independently wealthy and I'm too young and too poor to retire.  :-p

BUMP. I am having the exact same problem as Sam_SK. I have BF2 downloaded from battlelog and FH2 installed and running perfectly. When I try to install the map pack from the community updater, a box appears that says Hashing existing pieces (0%). Estimating remaining download time. The updater fails to progress from here even after 15 minutes or so when I finally closed it down. For reference I have quite speedy internet so I know it's not an internet problem on my end. Any help would be awesome as I would love to be able to play this game online again. Thanks.

Usually for me I get the 'hashing existing pieces' message and it looks like it's not downloading. But then after 10-15 min it's all downloaded and works fine.

You're saying it doesn't download at all after 15min?

Hi that's correct. In fact after I made my first post I decided to give it another shot so I started it and then went to eat dinner and played a game of Settlers of Catan. That gave it about 2.5 to 3 hours and when I came back it was still on hashing existing pieces. Would my next step be to do a full reinstall of BF2 and FH and see if it works?

Any chance you guys import Defiant for Battle of B   and Panzer38 for Dunqirq from FH1?

Also is there any update soon?

Can atleast someone say no no?
Is really importing vehicles from FH1 as time-consuming  as making new one?

It is less time consuming, but they look crap.

Why would you want to play CMP? Undergrowth is horrible. Although I like their air maps.

What the fuck do you know about mapping?! you have been here since like 1 year?

Wow, such a butthurt.

It's hard not to agree with Ts4EVER on that one, mate. It's even harder to believe that you didn't just ignore FHMax3, though. He obviously has no idea what he's talking about.

My point is, this is a vehicle from FH1 that was ported over:

This is the Panzer 38(t):

FH1 did not have the same kind of consistency of graphics that FH2 has.

I say port the stuff you want now.  Redo the skins later if you want to spend that time on it.
The quality argument made a lot more sense when BF2 was a top of the line game.  it's never going to look as good as current titles.  It is just more fun to play, IMO.  I personally don't notice the difference between ported stuff and from-scratch models when I am in game.  Maybe because I play on a laptop.

It's not only a question of skins, but also overall polycount, normal maps, specular maps etc. Not to mention some might be in a wrong scale or historically wrong, especially the really early ones. And while FH2 is not top of the line graphically, it punches above its weight a bit due to art direction and a (relatively) uniform quality, at least when it comes to models.

Wtf? Stop being so ready to jump on people. TS was talking about FH1 vehicle ports, not maps.

FH has always had a reputation for being an incredible looking mod. Not just relative to newer games (when it first came out) but relative to other BF2 content. It's part of why people play FH.

From what I've heard, Porting content is sometimes not that much easier than making a new model. The panzer (38)t wouldn't look good even with a new skin tbh. You would notice the very low poly parts of the model.

Even I notice the low poly parts of the IS-2 model. And that was a tank that was made with very good quality by Rad.

Pr0z4c carefully considered those comments for 5 and 1 months respectably.  At 4 AM Saturday morning he decided the time was right for a succinct reply.

I'm with him.

You don't really think he spent 5 and 1 month respectably to carefully think over those comments, do you?

I can't download anything through the community updater. I either get stuck on "Waiting for Seed" for Matt's retexture pack or "hashing" for the mappack.

People have to seed in order for other people to download. I've been seeding for a while now. I urge everyone else to do the same.
