Title: Battlefield 1942 10th year!
Post by: Natty on 10-09-2012, 19:09:46
Today september 10th marks the 10 years anniversary of BF1942 (Sep 20th in USA)

Can't believe I've lived a whole decade with this franchise now... still remember the first steps I took on Battleaxe 10 years ago... didn't know what the hell i was doing...chaos everywhere....

Now, I've passed from gamer to hardcore fan, to fan mapper, to modder, to tournament mapper to FH2 Developer to level designer, sound artist, Effects artist, game play designer and onwards to Designer at EA... what a ride  :P so many people I've gotten to know; players, clan people, modders, fans of forgotten hope & other great Battlefield Mods, industry people....

If I knew what I gave myself in to when I got that copy of that Swedish game 10 years ago  :o maybe I shouldn't have bought it (lol!)

Here's a huge thanks to everyone out there who is part of this community, (putting up with all my crap) this game and its franchise. Imagine all the experiences it has given us, without it, no Forgotten Hope 1 or 2, without it, maybe I would have worked with something completely different (or being a bitter Source modder)

Happy 10 years Battlefield!  :-* :-* :-*

1942... the most fun I ever had with a game. Nothing beats the fun I had with BF1942 and the FH and Desert Combat mods (bf2 couldnt beat that!).

One of the most important games in my "gaming career".
I remember playing it for the first time with some buddies during our own small LAN parties. The freedom the game gave us was incredible, no game has done it before.
We actually used Fraps and made our own "Jackass" videos with all sorts of crazy stunts. Then I discovered great mods, such as our beloved FH1, DC, Battlefield Pirates, BF1918 and many, many more. Those ~30 Euros I´ve spent on the game were a great investment that gave me hours upon hours of fun. Good times, good times.

I bought my BF1942 because of FinnWars mod... few months later I found FH0.7 too. Before buying the game, I played the demo a lot though.

I played the ever-loving shit out of the demo... Played some of the vanilla too, but mainly I played the mods. Desert Combat, Galactic Conquest, FinnWars, Pirates and Forgotten Hope.

My first round was with the multiplayer demo on Wake Island... I was so excited to play a FPS game with boat, airplane and tanks on a huge map.

But the thing I love the most was the landing and the naval combat. I miss those thing in fh2 :(

And sure as hell did i loved it in bf 1942 and FH1

I was a beta tester for a small game company in those heady days and we had an impromptu arrangement with EA (in Burnaby) to meet up and conduct test sessions in both Global Operations, then once we were bored. onto endless rounds of Wake Island.

It was crazy in the very early days, as Wake Island had no skybox, a much different map layout and super crazy game physics. There was one tank, one jeep and 2 planes per side (people nowadays are spoiled)

you could jump out of a plane, land on the ground without parachute (didn't exist yet), capture the flag and then warp into the back seat of the plane which was flying at max altitudes. So much fun...

I still play FH1 and FHSW and so should everyone else. With the new code for multiplayer it's amazing to go back to an old map and get an entirely new experience playing the same old.

 LOVE 42 forever

DC, XWW2, and Pirates were all I ever played, along with some minor mods as well. Always loved the custom "backyard" map where your neighbors (enemies) stole your lawnmower. Or the 1942 version of the small CoD 4 crate map, with the StG on the top most crate.

Played wake island in the multiplayer demo on a private Lan Party with 6 people. Couldn't get enough. Though the graphics were a bit outdated. But I accepted that considering the large map and the freedom given.

Getting lost in the middle of the battlefield without knowing how you can win or what to do, just randomly shooting other guys marked as "enemy" or those who are hostile to you.

Suddenly the round ended with one of the side winning, but you don't care, because you are happy.

BF1942 is amazing, and truly a milestone in gaming world.

getting bombed for the first time by a flying fortress. Words can not describe the feeling I had in those 3 seconds I saw the 8 bombs fall and destroy half my team  ;D, or the first time I lay down behind debris with  my rifle praying that the tiger passing just 2 meters away from me doesnt see me. Battlefield 1942 was a unique game, its sad they dont make game like that now :P.

I played this one after BF2 and Vietnam and still found it to be much fun to play.
Loved the huge content and the awesome main theme.
Hated the bots for killing my plane with a mounted MG42 just before I could bomb their tank :P

I did the math once. With only my recorded hours, I have, in the last ten years, played Battlefield 1942 on average 20 minutes a day, everyday. It has had a profound effect on my life, both in positive and negative ways, and even to this day the theme song remains a reminder of my child hood. Hell, I even met my best friend in a clan that played the game, and I don't know what I'd do now without them.

Thanks to Battlefield 1942, I know now how to use Photoshop, 3ds Max, Sony Sound Forge, Sony Vegas, and a whole host of other products.

But far from being a shining symbol of my childhood, the meeting place for my greatest friend in the world, and a learning platform for so many things, Battlefield 1942 installed, and has forever kept my ending interest with military history. First with FH1, and now with FH2, and other games.

I recently bought the entire Anthology again for 12 dollars, so many years after its release, and still play whenever I get the chance. I keep all the mods installed, in hopes that maybe somebody will be playing FH1, Pirates, or Desert Combat, and I still to this day, think Battlefield 1942 is the BEST battlefield game ever released.

Knew it was gonna be a great game after a bunch of sessions of Codename Eagle on lan parties, we would always laugh our asses of at the silliness of it

That explains a lot. Looks like Codename Eagle is already using the same engine as Battlefield later.

Codename Eagle was Refractor 1.  BF1942 to BF2142 are Refractor 2.

BF1942 and Vietnam were still made using Refractor 1. BF2 and such are Refractor 2.

I never really liked BF1942; felt terrible to play to be honest. The idea was fun though. You could find me on FH1, FinnWars and mostly Galactic Conquest.

Fh1 is populated still during Euro time zones.

DC rocks it out in North American time zone

and don't forget that FhSW is packed everyday during japan peak time.

I will never love a game more than 1942.

So there was a tank entry animation ready since the 1st Battlefield? And we still don't have those? That's clearly just being lazy as hell...

I also believe that had we cared more about sales than what the game really was, I don’t think it would have turned out as great as it did. The whole reason we did Battlefield 1942 was to create a game WE wanted to play.

it just hurts to read this.

Well yeah it might look like they have forgotten this when they developed BF 3, but you have to understand that it's not about what THEY want to play anymore... It's a lot more people involved now and the pressure of success is much, much greater.

Although I still can't forgive them everything they did, I can understand them.

what is the vid of the non-flying planes and boats? Been searching around, and I can't find them. Every early trailer looks normal.

Anyways, the first time I played Battlefield was in 2004 when my dad bought a new Dell desktop. It was awesome with it's ATI 9800! I remember, I was 12 years old, no money, no shops that sold computer games in 30 km radius. So I searched on google for "Free games", "Free shooters" and so on. I downloaded four "games". Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault demo, Battlefield 1942 multiplayer demo, BF1942 singleplayer demo and BF1942 SWoWW2 multiplayer demo. God, I played those demos to pieces. I had a gamespy account and I had 500+ hours on both Bf42 mp demo and secret weapons of world war 2. It's sick, but Wake Island and Hellendoorn were NEVER boring. They REALLY should make a remake of Hellendoorn. It is a forgotten pearl, much better than Strike at Karkand IMHO.

I also remember when Battlefield 2 demo came out with Gulf of Oman... WOW. Unfortunately, I feel they failed a bit on the remake of that map on BF3.  The map feels much smaller now, and the game is too fast paced. This destroys some of the old stuff I LOVED about the map, like the fight for all the US starting posts by the sea. This could take minutes  before the attacker got a hold of the flag. On BF3, they take 10 seconds to get there.

Overall I don't like BF3 because it's way too fast paced, small maps, wtfweaponunlockssamefuckingsoundanddamageandaccurayonallweapons and spray and pray full auto. But, it's maybe just me being old and grumpy (>implying 20 years is old) and not liking changes. A 12 year old today will disagree with me...

Wall of text, oh well

The first time i played BF1942 was in a Cybercafe, or internet cafe. I was shocked, some 8 yrs old kid was watching the intro with me.. i couldn't believe i was seeing a Submarine and all that shit!

The PC was so bad it took hours to get everything up and running, i don't know how but i did ran Battleaxe..

Shit was great, i remember i was standing in a bunker with the MP40 and i also remember an airplane flying over my bunker, it was a spit.

Also the Menu Music was epic!
