This is one small step for a dev, one giant leap backwards for FH2...

....wait, what?

Quote
‘Not One Step Back’ was officially Order Number 227 issued by the Soviet High Command and signed by Joseph Stalin on July 28th, 1942. ‘Not One Step Back’ was issued in direct response to Stalin’s correct belief that the Nazi’s ‘Operation Blue’ would target Stalingrad. The order was distributed to every unit in the Russian armed forces and read out to all troops.

"Not a Step Backward" It have to do something with Russia. Stalin put commissars behind his troops to ensure nobody isnt going to flee from killing fields... too far I presume ;D

Nice, Eastern Front. Mid to late war, I guess? Maybe Op. Zitadelle?
The tanks are cool and the screenshots nice, too. Too bad we didn´t get a rough time specification, though.

Not as epic as I thought, but cool, nonetheless.

Ok I was afraid that our big 'reward' for MODB, would just be an official announcement for the Ardennes. I don't know why I had such evil thoughts about the devs, but there it is.

But instead we get Russia! I love it. Of course I won't be truly happy until I see a Katyusha. (And I won't be truly bemused until I see someone in game decide that this truck full of rockets would be a good way to drive to the enemy.)

In general:
Well to be honest I expected more. Like a release date of bulge for example.  ;)
It was mentioned you would make an announcement you wouldn't make otherwise...I can't imagine this.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate you're work very much but this time you produced too many expectations.  :P

Nonetheless I'm looking forward to playing it when it then will come in a year or so.  ;D

Great update time for the defense (and attack) of Mother Russia!  ;D

But i have a question...How "Complete" are these vehicles? I mean is this their final skin ? Because honestly it looks (like many stuff ingame) too clean...I'd expect vehicles in Eastern front to be ... Hardened :)

I'm never happier than when I'm in a very big, heavy, noisy, smelly Russian tank. Hopefully the Russians will be cursing profusely in their native language as well. And there's got to be a vodka bottle somewhere in there as well ? As always, thanks FH team !

Nice update, I do like the convertion of the KV-IS into the SU-152, pretty clever use of different parts of the KV turret  :)

And the textures are as usual, pretty detailed. I especially like the tracks. I have some Soviet tanks models at home, and the tracks look the same on them. I hope TrahnLee aka Gunnie (or whoever will export/code this vehicle) will find the good values for the track UV animations, would be a shame to waste ingame such a nice texture :P

Well, if the devs make SU85 for example, you already have SU 122

Got ISU 152? ok we also have ISU 122.

T34 and T34 85 also look much alike minus turret and fuel tanks

Not to mention Su 76 and the soviet light tanks

What a coincidence now that i orderd a USSR flag yesterday

After a moment of thinking fapping, I paused.

After all the information on changelog, and having seen Kuuterselkä and Crimea 1944 on rotation on the test server long time ago, THIS was the "special" announcement?

I was rather expecting something that had not been published or shown in any form or shape. :-\

Post by: [ret]azreal on 16-01-2011, 20:01:33
this was the special update promised if we get 1st on MOTY.

clear as day. Let me explain...

We are trying to open up FH2 to more content now that we have a solid base (Africa & Normandy). We decided to start working on the Russian front. We decided that this was the most promising thing we had to show off as a prize for taking a spot in the top of the MOTY.

Had we NOT won, you probably wouldn't have seen this for...another 6 months to a year. Some of you already knew this was coming, and I apologize for those who feel 'let down', but overall I think in the long run many of you will be happy that we made this announcement now. Look at the suggestion forum, and see how many people suggest a new front such as the Ostfront. Now I can throw in a Russian render every once and a while, instead of just doing re-skinned US/Ger tanks for the Bulge. Many people have called us lazy, but in reality, we've been working our asses of behind the scenes to do stuff like this.

We got reskins for Panthers: thats all -.-
We got skins for Wehrmacht: thats all, where is US, we want maps -.-
We got Russian front + skins + bulge maps: what thats all -.-

Just ignore them. The quiter the devs are the more they work :)

Well i think it was a fantastic update.

You guys have proven that you know what your doing & if it takes awhile to get it right, then im sure many here will agree to be more patient and wait for a more polished product.

Azreal,  if you will answer my 3 questions,  i will run away and you wont here a peep;

Quote
1 - Will we see "The Bulge Patch" before March 2011
2 - Will we see the 1st "Eastern Front Patch" in 2011
3 - Will we see any more Normandy add-on maps in 2011

there are some more things besides reskinned stuffings.. like the M4A3E8 or the M4A3 76( with out E8) sherman 105.... annoucement of tank overhaul or american planes being fixed to dogfight better.. but thats jsut me. lol.. yea i complain.. i love the update.. but i also forgot the ruskies used churchills, valintines and M4A2s!  woot! lend lease stuff for the win!...

also.. i was really hoping to see panzer 4's with the turret skirt only! .. or perhaps wire mesh skits.. think both those saw more on the east front then west.
love the update.. KV1 FTW

:( unfortunately their model didn't fit to fh2 (for some reasons front polys of the models were deleted ).
But do not worry, creating content isn't the hardest part of FH2.
Getting nice and playable map is however.

Should be something on early war soviet tanks, but T34's and KV's where standard equipped with radio's...

Hooray for Bulge! Double Hooray for Russian front!! Some of my favorite FH1 maps are east front; Seelow Heights, Berlin Streets, and Pavlov's house(which I just played last night on pixelfighter :-).

Anyone following these forums knew Bulge was coming next. The real 'news' here(for me at least) is the eastern front. I am so glad they're going on to that before pacific. Mainly because I personally believe whatever front they do next(not counting Bulge which is an expansion of Normandy/West front) will probably, realistically be the last one done for the mod. Bulge would have to be at least one if not two releases and then Russia would take at least a couple releases after that. Given the development timetable so far, all these releases will take the next 1 1/2 to 2 years, and BF2 is already a 5 1/2 year old game engine.

@Antrax

Concerning the ongoing game-politics there won't be any modable games in the future, but RO2.
So BF3 will probably not be modable and so the only BF game which is modable is BF2. Hopefully this mod last long enough to see the pacific...

Then, in the corner of my eye.
"Russian green?"
Followed by a minute of squealing.

The Russians at last!

not really a problem.

like Revoluzer said, it's the gamepolitics of many distributors or even devs themselves that won't allow FH2 devs to move on to another engine if they wanted to make something at least slightly similar to what FH2 is. (non-existing) mod support and engines not built for this. ok, I heard about those mods for Crysis and ArmA 2 but I just don't see a reason to move to another engine just because the game is "old"... because whenever they just move to another engine, most of their work would have to be done from sratch I believe and it would take just another couple of years to get one theater with a reasonable number of maps - but you could already call the game "old". Tbh, there is a difference between a game being old in 2000, game being old in 2005 and a game being 'old' in 2010 since the graphics are improving vastly and there's still less and less difference when it comes to the visual quality with each new title. And FH2 does look beautiful - that is when you play on high settings.

I was rather expecting something that had not been published or shown in any form or shape. :-\

We know... but there is quite a difference between trainspotting some map on a server-listing site, than to publicly announce something :) We wanted this announcement to go out to everyone, and I am sure 99.9% of the visitors on FH2 website, didn't know about our future plans.

The fact that we won MOTY injected some motivation in to our devteam, and this announcement is made out of 100% love and gratification to all people who have been playing FH2 for the last three years.
I think most of all, this announcement can be seen as a proof of commitment from us, that we will continue updating the mod as long as we have players that make it all worthwhile :)

~Thank you all~

Secondly, the test server runs many weird maps, don't take those as "published" facts about what we work on. ;D

Whenever I switch game from this to say, Modern warfare 2, I note a couple of things:

1/How pretty COD looks,
2/How interesting the various deaths look,
3/The storyline,

and regarding Fh2

1/How pretty FH2 looks, and the effects that make me feel the pressure of warfare eg. suppression etc,
2/How effective its sound is in convincing me of the various feedbacks eg. that fact that I'm being shot at, say,
3/How great the gameplay is, and how much I feel proud of each kill,
4/How satisfying many deaths feel when I put in a good hit,
5/How I have no game with better game-play and a sense that I am the master of my fate (And I have games from Lemmings to Black Ops and BC2)

Now it may be a 6 year old engine, but frankly, I don't see good reason to switch a damn thing. Its all coloured bubbles really, this whole new engine... blabla bla... We want tanks to blow up in THIS way, we want planes to spiral out of control, we want decaptutions, we want Germans to fricking jump out from fricking wardropes... Its all coloured bubbles.

We're still discovering new ways to improve game-play and explore more options with this engine. I still play Unreal tournament 1, and am loathe to play Unreal tournament 3. Why? Because I feel Unreal Tournament has better gameplay. GAME-PLAY. It doesn't come with graphics, level destruction or engine toys, it comes from simple mechanics like feedback, control sensitivity and how the game mechanics work together.

if it eint broke, why fix it.

Let me put it is this way

If i look at todays games i see=
Good graphics ragdolls animations and such.. but oh wait, always the same content.. and less and less content

When i see FH2 i see=
hundreds of weapons, nations, tanks, apcs, jeeps, trucks,Artillery, AA guns, anti tank guns, planes and more fighting eachother on over 30 high quality maps
I see a fine combination of historical accuracy, gameplay, fun and realism
I see a fine mature community.

Sorry but FH2 has hundreds of things what todays games have. Todays games are all about BLING and shine and few on Gameplay, content, fun and the good old roots of online gaming.
i am NOT saying this is with all videogames.

Even though most will agree it was time to move from BF42 to BF2, with such things as ironsights, smarter bots, etc, etc... We also lost alot. The engine was not made for the scope of FH, or WW2 for that matter - Yet, we have made good with it... do you really want us to move to a new engine and find out that we can't even have aircrafts, say.... Or vehicles?

There is one quetion that is burning on my lips: Did the defs got some of their models fromthe BGF mod? Because that would speed things up alot. Even if you have to do things over for quality sake.

Still hoping to see their tank system ingame.

I hope not because those things lacked low resolution detail. At low res, some tanks were made up of triangles. Besides, it was clearly stated that it was designed by Toddel, with no mention of a BGF dev.

I think I can answer in the negative to that question.

As said before by Seth Soldier, creating models/textures isn't such a hard job, the other things like creating a playable map and a believable evironment + coding all the stuff is the real hard job.

Forget what I said about game engines and all that jazz in my earlier post. I guess I was just looking at it from the perspective of the past and how after a few years of development on the bf1942 engine the devs went to BF2. I just didn't realize that the situation today was different in that regard as far as upcoming games not being moddable(which is kind of a bummer as far as the long term outlook for mods) and other factors such as not representing enough of an improvement over bf2 to be worth the pain in the ass of restarting things again. Besides...yeah...you devs do have Crazy skills in terms of getting the most out of this engine that seems humanly possible. I mean things like the vegetation in FH2 compared to in vanilla BF2...holy crap. So long since I played vanilla that I'd forgotten about that ;-)

Killer update and those upcoming west front snow battles should be very nice. Praying for a remake of Nordwind  ;D

Right you are, but the time it takes to create a map is the main time consuming factor in this equation and not the models, which some of devs seem to just 'shake out of their sleeves'. It's as if they have their own little slave workers in their basements. You can't imagine the speed with which they produce their models. ^^

some of them are >----------------------------------------------------------------<   -this fast

but seriously
lost of stuff is already done it is just not shown yet. and as N24 said mostly the mapping takes up the "longest" time in creating a new theater. sure there are some models (player models especially) that also need a long time to get them done right but then they can be used on many maps, same with statics, weapons, vehicles but the maps are always done from scratch (well mostly ^^). for those peeking at the maps run on the test server you see that some of the maps there are in "testing phase" for some months now while many others havent reached that phase yet.

the focus right now is bulge and only once that is done we are gonna get going full speed on eastern front (i guess) but the mappers might have already started with their eastern front maps, who knows.

anyways, snow is awesome hurray for german camouflage and panzerfaust 60 :D for some long range tank killing against those pesky shermans.

Bullshit, SdKfz 251 number 163 had clear orders, scout ahead and transmit the size of the enemy formations to HQ, then move around the tanks and pick off any Russian infantry that tries to sneak pass. Instead they went back to HQ after reporting, so mr. Galland and his Stuka came to aid.

Or vehicles?

i am going to fire back that frost bite would permit aircraft.. BF1943.. just saying. XP

I can, but I'm not going to. Those shots are all Work in Progress. We're simply letting you know we are working on stuff by showing these screenshots. You'll find out which maps are which when we make newsupdates about them.

Ok, so I am not asking because I want to rush anything, But in the news update, it was mentioned that the work process was going faster. Appreciated, there are 2 theaters being worked on at the same time, however, its been 6 months since the last release... that's aprox. twice as long as other releases, and with us not being close enough to know how many maps there are... Well,... how fast is faster here?
Title: Re: Not a Step Backwards: FH2 Update
Post by: [ret]azreal on 17-01-2011, 19:01:36
That's cause this is another theater per-say. In the last few patches we've only released maps and a few new vehicles. Now we have to deal with snow and all the effects and art stuff associated with that, plus re-skins and new maps.

I still hope that Bulge can be release in the colder time of the year... else it would be a bit strange to play it first. Bulge with 30° for the first time would be kinda strange. :P
The imagination to play bulge while it's foggy and snowy outside of the house is just making it better.

Lets's hope.  :)

We simply don't know when we are able to release it. "If I'd knew that, I'd also know the lottery numbers for tomorrow" like my former boss used to say.

Do mind that we want to see this out as soon as possible as well. We're really excited to be able to play with all of you guys. Seeing you guys having fun and enjoying FH2 is one of the driving factors for many of us developers :)
But the bulge is a whole new front and a whole lot of stuff has to be done which unfortunately takes more time than previous Normandy Releases. After all, this is an entire new front, like 2.2 was from 2.15

No, Kurt, not exactly a year, we're lucky to that extend that we don't have to create all new models for everything ( trees, houses, statics, vehicles, weapons ) as some of those are done with a snowy re-texture. :)

The update will be this year, anything else would be silly. I'd even go as far as say it'll be on this half of the year. However I simply can't say when the update will come 'cause:
1. I simply don't know
2. if I'd promise a specific date and we'd miss it, everyone would get mad and disappointed.
3. And I'd most probably miss-guess the specific date because of number 1.

I thought the KV-1s hade ligther or thinner armour, if it is on par with the matilda then it is actually quite good armour when i read the neews it looks like it sacrified armour and got a smaller turret to gain better/more speed.

I actully thought this would be more like a medium strong tank if it is as heavy armourd as a Matilda and have even sacrificed somthing, then its a bloody hard to crack tank, even for good german guns.
I actully wonder now howe fast this will be.

Well, strictly speaking, the KV-1S has slightly thicker max armour than the Matilda, but in the terms of the way armour works ingame, they are pretty much the same.  The difference is that the Matilda has to face 5.0cm guns that cannot hurt it.  The KV-1S was up against the 7.5cm gun that could quite easily hurt it.

The KV-1 first had 75mm of armor. The model 1941 had 75+20. And the Model 1942 had 110 mm of armor

The crews complained that the KV did not had much advantage over the T34. Only more armor. It had far less mobility yet the same firepower.

KV crews sended feedback that the KV most needed thing was more firepower
The response=OK MORE SPEED BY LESS ARMOR K

So the KV went back to 75mm of armor....with a bit more speed

I should add that the wallpaper was made from actual 3d models...

So how much is exactly from the game on the wallpaper? Just tell me that the smoke from the destroyed tank is real! Just tell the truth!  ;D

Only the tanks are 3d models.. all else is photoshop or painted. :)

Right now we have a small but solid amount of rural statics for the mappers to start with. Compared to the number of Normandy statics it´s tiny number, but we have just started. ;) You might have to wait for pictures until the first map will be shown to the public.

Have you noticed that the tank on the right bottom ist missing some barrels and the turret is missing the rear mg? And there is a number on the turret. Clearly not the KV-1S fom the News. Maybe a T-34/85?

Asking for updates is a two-sided blade. You show pure interest towards the mod which makes it great for the devs, they see that you *want* to see new stuff. But then again on the other hand... asking for updates will not make them come up quicker. ;)

Have you decided yet how the ISU152 will do in tank to tank combat? i mean atm HE shells do not much vs tanks, and the news update says that the majority of its shells are HE. so how much damage will the HE shells do to tanks? and if they do much damage, what is the use of AP shells then?
and any plans on the reload time?

you are busy with the bulge of course but just questions that came to mind.

Title: Re: Not a Step Backwards: FH2 Update
Post by: Thorondor123 on 31-01-2011, 21:01:53
SU152, not ISU. Although we might see the ISU too, who knows.

At the moment the bigger HE shells should actually do some damage to tanks. But keep in mind that the largest tank shell are only 88 mm and even the largest artillery is 105 mm. 152 mm will deliver quite a punch, I would say.

AP shells would offer a flatter trajectory, and that's about it. :P

As an ISU and ML 20 expert, we can safely say that anything up to a tiger tank is pretty much ruined when hit by a 152.4mm 43.3KG (containing 6KG of explosives)

Tiger tanks, for example, simply lost there turrets when a shell hitted the frontal hull armor. Soviet SU/ISU 152 doctorine was that the crew had to keep firing at the enemy tank untill "It did not looked like a tank anymore"

As for the KT, there are reports of them surviving direct hits..
Well for the tank, not the crew.
If your tank survived, your crew was dead anyway

The reload time was something between 1 to 2 rounds a minute

As for the AP and APHE shell, i sorry vonmudra, but the trajectory was the same. Muzzle velocity of the HE-Fragmentation, steel   OF-540 shell was 655 M/S, and the APHE   BR-540 was 600 M/S

The APHE was not so well designed  ;)

After war they designed a proper round, wich penetrated 50% more, did more damage and had a muzzle velocity of 900 M/S  but ye, the war had ended then :v
Title: Re: Not a Step Backwards: FH2 Update
Post by: Butcher on 31-01-2011, 23:01:08
yeah, but my question was "why would i use AP shells anyway, if HE does the job aswell and you are also prepared for infantry attacks?". - nobody would use AP shells except if you are out of HE-Shells.

Well we have kingtigers penetrated by fireflies frontally (ingame) ... so i think the SU152 will be worse -.-

on the contrary: If even a kingtiger gets 1 shot frontally ingame the panther HAS TO 1 shot a SU152 frontally (and not just with pzgr40).

Post by: THeTA0123 on 31-01-2011, 23:01:40
75mm of sloped armor, no problem for panther, PZIV/StuG is a diffrent thing

Title: Re: Not a Step Backwards: FH2 Update
Post by: Butcher on 01-02-2011, 00:02:30
And then we have Sherman 76mm penetrating panthers 80mm frontally ingame, so why not 75mm/L48 guns with pzgr40 damaging a SU152 frontally?
Im not talking about 1 shotting the thing, but at least damage should be dealt.

HVAP from the Ordnance QF 17 pounder can penetrate the front of an Tiger II. And a 152 mm shell from the ML-20 howitzer will, if not penetrate, rip off the armour or cause massive spalling that obliterates the crew. ;)

But yeah, you better hit on the first try or the faster guns will get the not too armoured I/SU.

PS. Theta; there is a ML-20 not three kilometres from where I live, shall I go and say hi? ^^

2 THETA: Correcting it for you :)
"It did not look like a tank anymore" or the crew bailed (whatever comes first)

Is the KT currently 1s-1k frontally from a Firefly or it is only with abusing the deck shots?

Ah ok. Thank for the ultrafast answer ;)

We really need to do something with the deckshots/cupolashots. Is it possible to give some special attribute to the handheld AT weapons so that only they can damage those parts?

I did like the idea of the invisible walls. This is definitely doable, but would require all of the models updated, which might not be too easy due to the sheer number of said models.

USSR - Land - KV-1S (upcoming)
USSR - Land - SU-152 (upcoming)

It's been in the news but isn't on any maps - therefore it is upcoming.

in the files, maybe... Like the sub and swordfish... But not necessarily upcoming.

tbh, it may be good to have some of these variant weapons and vehicles exclusively for fan-mappers to use. Although, I cannot see a dday map over the horizon, let alone one that specifically uses the AVRE or bangalore torpedoes

Anything that's been in the news but isn't featured in the current mod version is upcoming.  It could be upcoming for 10 patches, but it would still be upcoming.
