I need some Euroadvices
« on: 04-03-2014, 00:03:22 »
Hello all!
Finally,after 9 years,I'm going to Europe by June! 8)
Til now according to what is planned,we're going to Stockholm,Copenhagen,Tallinn,Helsinki,Moscow and Saint Petersburg.Maybe Turku.

I'm not going on a tour but with other persons. We have a script (still open to some changes) and one them will be our guide.
Still,I'd like to know if anyone here knows the interesting places to go,best places to stay.

And I have two very important questions to ask.

I'm really willing to visit the Central Air Force Museum at Monino.A site I saw briefly said Monino is a military facility and you need permission to visit it.The site was also saying a lot of not very encouraging words about the route to it.
Does anyone here ever went to Monino? Does the museum staff speak english, even if only "yes" and "no"?

And about surplus and replica shops.Any good stores at those cities?
Specifically,I'm looking for soviet stuff, like the GP-5 gasmask and the '80s officers uniform.

Helsinki:

On Suomenlinna you'll find the submarine Vesikko (open for visitors) as well.

North west of Helsinki:

As for surplus equipment, check out Varusteleka's (http://www.varusteleka.com/en/) physical store in northern Helsinki.

St. Petersburg:

It was closed when I was there unfortunately.

Don't drive around with a rented car. They are mental over there. It's the worst traffic I've ever seen.

And if you do, make sure you have a camera you can mount on the dash. I caught 4 accidents with mine in just a few days.

As I have said to others here before, when visiting Moscow as a foreigner make sure you are indoors by 6:00 PM, avoid unpopulated streets and alleys, and if you see a blind man loitering around in public ignore him unless you're looking for some cannabis, directions to the black market, or something more particular. If you see some men leaning on something in public and wearing telnyashka do not make eye contact or approach as you may be mistaken for a street prostitute. Don't fidget at all, you've no idea who you might signal by accident. Try not to wear something small and light blue around your midsection.

Stay alive, yeah?

Also, while in Moscow, beware of trolls under the bridges and avoid abandoned dwarven mines. :P
Seriously, Korsakov, where, when and how did you acquire all this knowledge? Especially the "blind man", "men wearing telnyashka" and "small and light blue around your midsection" parts.

Nah, I don't know much about Monino, have not been out that way since 1975 or so. If you're looking for a telnyashka though I suppose you could try a gift shop to museum or something, but you'd be better off ordering it off a website but either way, don't wear it in Russia or someone might take offense.
