Normally, people will find more comfort hanging around honest people who are open and have "nothing to lose." It is better that way, at least in western world, they put some care into making their feelings known and be honest about it. I think those people who have been victimized brutally and realize that they have some sort of social stigma feel that they have nothing to lose when going on in any kind of relationships.
In Asian sphere, people simply put too much effort to look nice and cool in their own standards. They rather stay away from people when in bad mood.
But an average guy here would say "I'm an asshole, because I am slightly different consonant than awesome." It's different, and we rarely pity ourselves, that's why I like it here.
People who put "Open minded, Simple, Cheerful, Likes Nice People, Aquarius, Sanguine, Serious, etc" in their description sounds far less than a fake to me. Everybody has got to be an asshole at least a hundred times in their life, however nice they really are. I lost count on how many fuck ups I did, but I never fake it: as law abiding citizen, helpful, productive member of society I am, I never claim to be "a simple nice guy who happens to love playing historically accurate FPS game"
