What did you think of The Force Unleashed? I'm just trying to gauge for myself - I didn't like the Force Unleashed (minority opinion, I know) so I've been wary of this new one.

Also, how did you see it so soon?

Force Unleashed was the video game, The Force Awakens was the movie.  ;)

Never touched The Force Unleashed stuff, so I cant compare. I saw Rogue One because it was released today.

Then dont watch it, its a trap. Rogue one is a masterpiece, The force unleashed is..

Its like prometheus. Its a good movie, but you dont want to see it connected to the Alien movies

The Force Unleashed is a two part game series. The Force Awakens is Episode 7, which I've seen.

Oops, that was what i meant! Also I figured the North American release would be first because of Disney, but apparently not.

Yeah.
I remember everyone was hyping up The Force Awakens. "It's so awesome", they said. Then I saw it and thought "eh." That movie had main characters as boring and uninteresting as Queen Amidala.

Had very little interest in TFA to begin with. I always thought SW Saga is good as a 6 part story about Anakin Skywalker but since Disney loves money... Saw TFA on the opening day and I thought it was dreadful.

It tried so hard to get to the Original Trilogy fans, trying to tickle the nostalgia bits but failed with it's "oh you liked those old movies, well here is a reference to them and here is another" way of trying to forcefully shove references down your throat. Not only this but also being ANH 2.0 is what bothered me the most. They played it way too safe and just made a soft-boot out of the franchise. None of the prequel films left me a bad taste when I walked out from the theatre, TFA did.

Rogue One on the other hand ties Prequels and Original trilogy very nicely and it's way to get to your nostalgic feels is more subtle, noticeable but not intrusive. Rogue One seemed to do very little wrong which to me is an amazing feat. No, it isnt perfect but it is one of the better Star Wars films. Rogue One managed to take me back to my childhood years when we played Star Wars as characters themselfs or with the toys, played excellent games like Rogue Squadron, Dark Forces or Shadows of the Empire and read a whole bunch of comics. This was that Star Wars that I am most familiar with, rebels fighting the empire during a time when the Jedi are no more.

All those times you could have spotted the biggest grin on my face while watching this film... is immeasurable.  :)

That's exactly what I wanted to hear! I wanted to like TFA so much but I just couldn't, I thought it was pandering and pointless. So I'm happy to hear your thoughts. Although I still sorta wish they'd just made a Rogue Squadron movie....

Is Kyle Katarn in the movie or did Disney just take a big shit on him (and Jan Ors)?

You can safely say that anything in Expanded Universe won't be in the Disney-Lucas franchise. So they don't have to risk "not as good as the novel / comic" anymore.

It is great to see silly episodes like the aptly named Yuuzhan Vong gone. But the whole The Force Unleashed saga is too great of a material to be thrown off just like that.

I can't help but agree. Discarding the EU was definately the logical thing to do, especially since they can just bring the bits that are good a bit at a time, like they have done with Thrawn.

To be honest the EU was way, way too contrieved. Some of it was excellent, like KOTOR (especially KOTOR II) and the Dark Times comics (which is probably my favorite comic series ever). Some of the Marvel comics (Resurrection of Evil comes to mind) were pretty good too.

Otherwise, EU abused too much of having movie characters thrown into the plot for no clear resons, cloning (a lot of cloning, not even the Thrawn trilogy escapes from this) and cheesy light/dark side dichotomy.
