Join today and help us test the maps on the CMP server at 18:00 UTC!

BTW, the map pack also contains the Dunkirk map from the French Hope

and a tank battle map based on the Battle for Hochwald Gap.

Maybe we will have a little event soon with the new maps.

Really? Why the fuck are you making more Western Front maps? Most of them that CMP makes are shit. And also, why do you make Meuse River, if there is a much better, more enjoyable map called "Meuse River"!! It is made by the FH2 devs who followed quality over quantity, not the other way around. We already have enough Africa and Western Front maps, prioritize Eastern Front maps, which should have good quality.

The Battle of Hochwald Gap is actually a nice opportunity to see some of the late-war Commonwealth equipment in action, such as the Land Matress. It could be a nice, muddy map, with candian armour and wasps attacking entrenched german paratroopers supported by some SPGs and (in later stages) some armour.

I'm sceptical though, all I can see right now are big random forested areas. Can't judge until it is played on a public server, I guess.

Me too. It seems like they went for "big is better" approach again because they've made the area where the fighting took place unnecessarily big. Streamlining is a thing, fellas.

I also think exactly the same about Nietjärvi. I dont understand why did you have to map out the entirity of the area between nietjärvi and lake ladoga and thus scaling it down horribly. Could have made the map focus entirely on the nietjärvi area instead and still fit in your 100 players for the tournaments...

No but I know the quality and nature of CMP and already can conclude it's useleness. But if you want it to be backed up by your claims, I'll run CMP updater.

Thanks for the discussion.

These are tournament maps.  We know what size and layout we need for that.  We've been doing it for years.  Also we left the combat areas off those minimaps.

The Hochwald map is still very WIP.  I've had trouble getting detailed information about the German defense there so it is rather generic.  I really made it as an excuse to try out a massive tank battle like Bombing the Reich but with tanks.

GeoPat, definitely. But Im not playing tournament anymore because I really dont see the point of that kind of teamwork. It feels like PR and is even more supported with gameplay and map design of maps. When I played people felt totaly lost- every squad defends its own flag and has absolutely NOTING with any other team member or squad. I remeber that most of time it was very boring hunting jeeps around.Thats not teamwork.

Why not trying other kind  of tournament ,something like preety close flags where squads will defend it own flags but could easly and fast support other squads, creating some kind of frontline fight? When I saw SiegfriedLine map, I new that is true tournament map!!! (all time thinking   on Knohof Crimea map?) Siegfried line looks really nice and exactly for my idea. Im not saying You need push mode/ no,Siegfied line is conquest and is perfect. WW2 was war with frontlines and tournament feels likemodern day wars. Also it would be good that you reduce assets on like: tanks, one car and three trucks. So if you want fast transfering of men, you need HQ truckers and car to come and pick your men up.
Then making flags harder to grey and capture & you need atleast 5 man in flag zone/-no sneacky fast capturing of flags. Also this would actually need for you to clear and dominate flag zone in order to capture it.
Then removing kill messages in order to make team members cooperate asking if kill is made or not.
Then mumble would be great. At the moment, if two squad attack together there is no way communicate between squad members..( there is some kind of FH2Mumble already)

This is what I always missed in tournament and hoping one day you will make true teamwork tournament ...

The Hochwald map is still very WIP.  I've had trouble getting detailed information about the German defense there so it is rather generic.

The Canadian Official History (Volume III, NorthWestern Europe 1944-1945) has a whole chapter dedicated to the battle. It gives a detailed account of the operation and has a couple of maps and sketches. Hell, the loading screen is actually a map from that book, and it clearly shows the German main line of resistance and antitank ditches.

I've taken a quick look at two more maps: Siegfried Line and Strongpoint Joki. Siegfried Line looks like a much better Westwall. It has a better atmosphere and a more sensible layout. Strongpoint Joki however... I sincerely hope it never makes it way into public rotation. The flags are all far apart form each other and brushing the edge of the map. In Villers-Bocage this is not a big problem since hedges block the view of the secondary terrain, here it will look ugly as hell. The area between the flags is samey and too open for my taste.

I read quite a bit of Canadian stuff about the battle for Hochwald, but it wasn't all that helpful when placing trenches and bunkers.  It's not like Omaha Beach where you can get maps and photos of the exact fortifications.  Maybe I need to visit the sight.  I think I did pretty good incorporating the information while still sticking to the plan of a tank battle map.  I'm sure I will improve it in the future.

Ivancic, you can always just play the Siegfried Line battle.  We might have a public event soon where we introduce these new maps and let the pubbies see if they like them.  As for your tournament ideas, we probably do need to get more variation in map style.  However, in years of playing FH2 campaigns at 3 different tournaments, I've noticed that tourney player really don't like the meat grinder maps.  Pubbies probably wouldn't like it either if they played the same stock map for 5-6 hours.  Tournament players like to maneuver around with tanks, have enough room for airplanes and launch surprise raids on flags.  You need room for that.  It's true that flag defense is a very boring but necessary duty that newcomers often get stuck with.  We are constantly trying to improve that.  I would like to see FH2 Mumble used in the future but its status in unclear atm.  Getting rid of kill messages and dynamic spotting might also be good ideas.  We would need less room for surprise attacks if we didn't have to avoid being lit up on the minimap all the time.

FRIDAY , 6 October , 18GMT , the map ORTONA will be played in the first battle of the campaign.

History

Battle of Ortona

By December 1943, the British Commonwealth's advance had broken through the German defences along the Moro river and now prepared to assault the area surrounding the seaside town of Ortona.

General Montgomery believed that the Germans would retreat north of Ortona, in an area where the terrain provided good natural defence positions and that the coastal city would therefore be an easy prey. Things did not turn out that way… On December 20th, the 2nd Brigade arrived near Ortona. The following day the Loyal Edmonton Regiment got as far as Piazza Vittoria at the entrance of the town. In front of them, the corso Vittorio Emanuele leading to the Piazza Municipale, the heart of the city. Narrow side streets were blocked by barricades and rubble left by the Germans. The wide-open corso, the only street that tanks could use was booby-trapped. The Canadian infantry had to clear its way through houses on the side before moving forward, a dangerous and difficult task.

The Canadians were first engaged by the 2nd Battalion of the Luftwaffe’s 3rd Parachute Regiment. This battalion bore the brunt of the defence until 24 December, by which time losses and exhaustion, added to the increasing weight of the Canadian attack, convinced General Heidrich, then commanding the 1st Parachute Division, to commit his divisional reserve, the 2nd Battalion of the 4th Parachute Regiment. The close-in nature of street fighting meant that the battle could not be controlled much above the section or squad level, and references to battalions or even companies are misleading. It is reckoned that little more than 100 paratroopers were in action in the town at any given time, with others resting in the town’s cellars and, particularly, its railway tunnels or they were re-deploying.

On December 27th, Allied Reinforcements were brought in and German paratroopers could not keep on fighting without relief. So on December 28th, they abandoned the city to the Canadians. The victory was a costly one: the Loyal Edmonton Regiment had 172 casualties, including 63 killed; the Seaforth Highlanders 103, including 41 killed. Taking into account losses by support units, the total number of Allied casualties reached 650 officers and men of all ranks.

Moar ideas  ;D  Come on guys!
How about this:
-every team at beginning has 1arty, 2tanks, 2trucks, 2cars, 1plane, 2AA(pickup kit), 2AT (pickup kit). Exactly.
-now before new battle, every side has 10 slots (or more). These 10 slots can be filled with with tanks, planes, cars, trucks, ATs(pickup kits), AAs(pickup kits) =everything max 6 . So every team can before battle or continuously trough battles decide in which segment they want to prefer,to train or to master ~ is it attack and tanks or defense with ATs and AAs, fast transport and mobility sounds good, maybe 7 planes can do the job instead of tanks.... Lots of variation and excitement!! :D You could never know what enemy will bring in in next battle. And everything has it pros and cons
- assets would be decided two days before so mapper can have time, aldo it is 5min job  ;D . Then small patch 1 hour before battle (or can it be doable with server files?? I think I saw that once on Termopile battle on 2 campaigns before with Hawker Hardy?)
- arty is out of choose because its too strong

I can really see this in future, and with Mumble, removed kill chat, dynamic spoting, tourney would really be something everyone waits for.

Taughts??  ;D :D

The idea you describe, teams choosing their vehicle loadout, has been done in the past and might be used in the future.  It takes a lot of admin work to implement and like everything FH2 related, we are currently understaffed.  Were going with a simple campaign this time.  Anyone who is interested in developing the tournament in the future should join and put their ideas in our forum: https://cmp-gaming.com/.  Even if we don't have all the ideas you want, the teamplay is there.  That is reason enough to join now.

As far as I know, loadout picking is made possible by having some kind of points system, where every vehicle is assigned a numerical value it can be "bought" for. This is a lot of work considering the amount of vehicles in the game, not to mention that if a team loses, the admin team leaves itself open to balance criticism (Why is that vehicle so cheap? etc). It is a can of worms.
I guess alternatively it could be possible to simplify it by having different loadout options per map, like "Infantry division, Armored Division, Airborne Division", where each have different strengths and weaknesses. So you only get heavy tank destroyers with the armored division, an infantry division gets more arty and more limited kits etc... that is just theorizing though, no idea how it would work in practice.

FRIDAY , 13 October , 18GMT , the map Bloody Gulch will be played in the second battle of the campaign.

History

Bloody Gulch

When the 101st Airborne entered the town of Carentan on June 12, 1944 (D-Day + 6) after heavy fighting on the two previous days, they met relatively light resistance. The bulk of the surviving German defenders (from the 6th Fallschirmjäger Regiment) had withdrawn to the southwest the previous night after a heavy Allied naval and artillery bombardment. Both sides realized the importance of the town: for the Americans, it was a link between Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, and would provide a base for further attacks deeper into German-occupied France. For the Germans, recapturing Carentan would be the first step towards driving a wedge between the two U.S. landing beaches, severely disrupting and possibly even destroying the Allied invasion.

The remnants of the 6th Fallschirmjäger resupplied and were reinforced by assault guns and panzergrenadiers of the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division on the night of June 12–13. The combined force counterattacked northeast towards Carentan at dawn on June 13, just as the 506th and 501st PIR were attacking southwest to enlarge the American defensive perimeter around the town. The 506th took the brunt of the attack, and by 10:30 a.m., the outnumbered and outgunned paratroopers were pushed almost back to the outskirts of the town.

Under intense German fire, F Company of the 506th's left flank broke and fell back. This exposed D Company's right flank, who also fell back, leaving E Company all alone. Cpt. Thomas P. Mulvey, the commanding officer of F Company,[2] was relieved on the spot by Lt. Colonel Robert Strayer.

When a German tank attempted to penetrate the left flank, two soldiers of E Company successfully destroyed it with a bazooka. Meanwhile, battalion headquarters stopped the retreat of D and F companies, pushing them forward 150 meters to cover the left flank.[1] The 2nd Battalion of the 502nd PIR took up positions to the right of the 506th, but by 1:00 p.m. they too had suffered many casualties, and the German attack was on the verge of breaking through their defenses.

At this critical point, sixty tanks from Combat Command A of the 2nd Armored Division and accompanied by infantry of the 29th Division,[1] counterattacked southwest from Carentan at 4:30 p.m.,[1] inflicting severe casualties on the Germans and forcing them to withdraw. The American victory led to the linkup of forces from Utah and Omaha beaches, creating a secure lodgement area for further American operations.

The actions of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment during the Graignes incident (better known as the Battle of Graignes) south-east of Carentan, played a part in the successful capture of Carentan and the Battle of Bloody Gulch. Had the mis-dropped paratroopers of the 507th not stopped the advance of the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division, it is possible that the German division could have made it to Carentan before the 101st Airborne Division. Furthermore, the 507th caused the Germans significant losses in the few days that they were holding Graignes and this likely influenced the battle at the Bloody Gulch.

Who won the first battle btw?

The Axis won in total. There were some close rounds and very hard fights at Municipali and San Francesco flags.

History

Battle of Stoumont

At dawn on 19 December, Peiper surprised the American defenders of Stoumont by sending infantry from the 2nd SS Panzergrenadier Regiment in an attack and a company of Fallschirmjäger to infiltrate their lines. He followed this with a Panzer attack, gaining the eastern edge of the town. An American tank battalion arrived but, after a two-hour tank battle, Peiper finally captured Stoumont at 10:30. Knittel joined up with Peiper and reported the Americans had recaptured Stavelot to their east. Peiper ordered Knittel to retake Stavelot. Assessing his own situation, he determined that his Kampfgruppe did not have sufficient fuel to cross the bridge west of Stoumont and continue his advance. He maintained his lines west of Stoumont for a while, until the evening of 19 December when he withdrew them to the village edge. On the same evening the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division under Maj. Gen. James Gavin arrived and deployed at La Gleize and along Peiper's planned route of advance.

German efforts to reinforce Peiper were unsuccessful. Kampfgruppe Hansen was still struggling against bad road conditions and stiff American resistance on the southern route. Schnellgruppe Knittel was forced to disengage from the heights around Stavelot. Kampfgruppe Sandig, which had been ordered to take Stavelot, launched another attack without success. Sixth Panzer Army commander Sepp Dietrich ordered Hermann Prieß, commanding officer of the I SS Panzer Corps, to increase its efforts to back Peiper's Kampfgruppe, but Prieß was unable to break through.

Small units of the U.S. 2nd Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, attacked the dispersed units of Kampfgruppe Peiper on the morning of 21 December. They failed and were forced to withdraw, and a number were captured, including battalion commander Maj. Hal McCown. Peiper learned that his reinforcements had been directed to gather in La Gleize to his east, and he withdrew, leaving wounded Americans and Germans in the Froidcourt Castle (fr). As he withdrew from Cheneux, American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division engaged the Germans in fierce house-to-house fighting. The Americans shelled Kampfgruppe Peiper on 22 December, and although the Germans had run out of food and had virtually no fuel, they continued to fight. A Luftwaffe resupply mission went badly when SS-Brigadeführer Wilhelm Mohnke insisted the grid coordinates supplied by Peiper were wrong, parachuting supplies into American hands in Stoumont.

In La Gleize, Peiper set up defenses waiting for German relief. When the relief force was unable to penetrate the Allied lines, he decided to break through the Allied lines and return to the German lines on 23 December. The men of the Kampfgruppe were forced to abandon their vehicles and heavy equipment, although most of the 800 remaining troops were able to escape.

FRIDAY , 3 November , 19GMT , the map Monte la Difensa will be played in the campaign Road to Glory

History

Battle of Monte la Difensa

Monte La Difensa, (also known as Hill 960) was one of the peaks forming the Camino hill mass which formed the left-hand "gatepost" dominating the Mignano Gap, key to the U.S. Fifth Army's route to Cassino and the Liri valley and thence to Rome. The mountain itself had become a stalemate for American and British troops because of the defenses employed by the German troops, part of the Bernhardt Line.

The action was the first combat in the Italian theatre for the US-Canadian commando unit 1st Special Service Force. They were attached to the U.S. 36th Infantry Division. The 1st SSF used the special training that they had received in winter and mountain warfare to scale the mountain and overcome the Germans atop the stronghold. The cost for both sides was high though. The 1st Special Service Forces suffered a 77% casualty rate, but distinguished themselves by doing the seemingly impossible.

(https://cmp-gaming.com/applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/history/battlehonours/italiancampaign/difensapic.JPG&key=b148b6155ab8b4c14829f69d0c475f60aa99d036f65879e11c027f7bc52978e8) (https://cmp-gaming.com/applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=http://fssflhg.tripod.com/a02f02c0.jpg&key=b5b50d53347bfba2fd40fcbbff5faabbeb9ae0b15c4571cf29de1b2f5df2a078)

With the rest of 36th Division on 1st SSF's right attacking Monte Maggiore and British 56th Infantry Division (attacking Monte Camino) and British 46th Infantry Division on their left, it took 5 days heavy fighting for the Camino hill mass to be cleared. Casualties were high. After a pause to regroup the U.S. Fifth Army renewed its offensive but it took until mid-January to advance the 10 miles (16 km) to Cassino at the mouth of the Liri valley and the formidable Gustav Line defenses, where the Allies were halted by stubborn German defense until May 1944.

Note that the First Special Service Force was one of the few units using the Johnson M1941 lmg, and the only one outside of the Pacific.

Very interesting battle. 8) Wish we had a Johnson to use.

Would love to see screens, seems like Italian mountains are tough to do justice in the BF2 engine.

Love the stories from Jack Callowhill in that video :)

EDIT: Interestingly, this is the same unit that invaded Kiska in the Aleutians. Apparently they came ashore thinking they would find enemy but the island was abandoned. I think this lead to some friendly fire incidents when they thought they saw the enemy because they didn't realize they were the only ones on the island.

History

Meuse River

To protect the river crossings on the Meuse at Givet, Dinant and Namur, Montgomery ordered those few units available to hold the bridges on 19 December. This led to a hastily assembled force including rear-echelon troops, military police and Army Air Force personnel. The British 29th Armoured Brigade of British 11th Armoured Division, which had turned in its tanks for re-equipping, was told to take back their tanks and head to the area. British XXX Corps was significantly reinforced for this effort. Units of the corps which fought in the Ardennes were the 51st (Highland) and 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Divisions, the British 6th Airborne Division, the 29th and 33rd Armoured Brigades, and the 34th Tank Brigade.

Unlike the German forces on the northern and southern shoulders who were experiencing great difficulties, the German advance in the center gained considerable ground. The Fifth Panzer Army was spearheaded by the 2nd Panzer Division while the Panzer Lehr Division (Armored Training Division) came up from the south, leaving Bastogne to other units. The Ourthe River was passed at Ourtheville on 21 December. Lack of fuel held up the advance for one day, but on 23 December the offensive was resumed towards the two small towns of Hargimont and Marche-en-Famenne. Hargimont was captured the same day, but Marche-en-Famenne was strongly defended by the American 84th Division. Gen. von Lüttwitz, commander of the XXXXVII Panzer-Korps, ordered the Division to turn westwards towards Dinant and the Meuse, leaving only a blocking force at Marche-en-Famenne. Although advancing only in a narrow corridor, 2nd Panzer Division was still making rapid headway, leading to jubilation in Berlin. Headquarters now freed up the 9th Panzer Division for Fifth Panzer Army, which was deployed at Marche.

On 22/23 December German forces reached the woods of Foy-Nôtre-Dame, only a few kilometers ahead of Dinant. However, the narrow corridor caused considerable difficulties, as constant flanking attacks threatened the division. On 24 December, German forces made their furthest penetration west. The Panzer Lehr Division took the town of Celles, while a bit farther north, parts of 2nd Panzer Division were in sight of the Meuse near Dinant at Foy-Nôtre-Dame. A hastily assembled Allied blocking force on the east side of the river, however, prevented the German probing forces from approaching the Dinant bridge. By late Christmas Eve the advance in this sector was stopped, as Allied forces threatened the narrow corridor held by the 2nd Panzer Division.

History

Hill 262, or the Mont Ormel ridge (elevation 262 metres (860 ft)), is an area of high ground above the village of Coudehard in Normandy that was the location of a bloody engagement in the final stages of the Normandy Campaign during the Second World War. By late summer 1944, the bulk of two German armies had become surrounded by the Allies near the town of Falaise. The Mont Ormel ridge, with its commanding view of the area, sat astride the Germans' only escape route. Polish forces seized the ridge's northern height on 19 August and, despite being isolated and coming under sustained attack, held it until noon on 21 August, contributing greatly to the decisive Allied victory that followed.

The American success of Operation Cobra provided the Allies with an opportunity to cut off and destroy most German forces west of the River Seine. American, British and Canadian armies converged on the area around Falaise, trapping the German Seventh Army and elements of the Fifth Panzer Army in what became known as the "Falaise pocket". On 20 August Generalfeldmarschall Walter Model ordered a withdrawal, but by this time the Allies were already blocking his path. During the night of 19 August, two battlegroups of Stanisław Maczek's Polish 1st Armoured Division had established themselves in the mouth of the Falaise pocket on and around the northernmost of the Mont Ormel ridge's two peaks.

On 20 August, with his forces encircled, Model organised attacks on the Polish position from both within and outside the pocket. The Germans managed to isolate the ridge and force open a narrow escape corridor. Lacking the fighting power to close the corridor, the Poles nevertheless directed constant and accurate artillery fire on German units retreating from the pocket, causing heavy casualties. Exasperated, the Germans launched fierce attacks throughout 20 August which inflicted losses on Hill 262's entrenched defenders. Exhausted and dangerously low on ammunition, the Poles managed to retain their foothold on the ridge. The following day, less intense attacks continued until midday, when the last German effort to overrun the position was defeated at close quarters. The Poles were relieved by the Canadian Grenadier Guards shortly after noon; their dogged stand had ensured the closure of the Falaise pocket and the collapse of the German position in Normandy.

FRIDAY , 24 November , 19GMT , the map Elsenborn Ridge will be played in the campaign Road to Glory

History

The Battle of Elsenborn Ridge was the only sector of the American front lines during the Battle of the Bulge where the Germans failed to advance. The battle centered on the Elsenborn Ridge east of Elsenborn, Belgium in the Ardennes forest. West of Elsenborn Ridge, near the cities of Liège and Spa, Belgium, was a vast array of Allied supplies and the well-developed road network leading to the Meuse River and Antwerp. The Germans planned on using two key rollbahns or routes through the area to seize Antwerp and force a separate peace with the United States and Britain. Capturing Monschau and the nearby village of Höfen, and the twin villages of Rocherath-Krinkelt just east of Elsenborn Ridge, were key to the success of the German plans, and Hitler committed his best armored units and infantry troops to the area, including the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend.

The green, untested troops of the 99th Infantry Division had been placed in the sector during mid-November because the Allies thought it was an area unlikely to see battle. Their soldiers were stretched thin over a 22-mile (35 km) front, and all three regiments were on line, with no reserve. In early December, the 2nd Infantry Division was assigned to capture a vital crossroads marked by a customs house and a forester’s lodge named Wahlerscheid, at the southern tip of the Hurtgen Forest. They transitioned through the 99th Division's lines and after a deadly, costly battle, captured the crossroads. But the Germans counterattacked in what the Americans initially thought was a localized spoiling action, but was actually a leading element of the Battle of the Bulge. The 2nd Division consolidated their lines, pulling back into Hünningen, and then to the twin villages of Rocherath-Krinkelt, and finally at the dug-in positions held by the 99th Division at Elsenborn Ridge.

In a fierce battle lasting 10 days, the American and German lines were often confused. During the first three days, the battle raged over the twin villages of Rocherath-Krinkelt, during which American G.I.s were at times isolated in individual buildings surrounded by German armor. Attacking Elsenborn Ridge itself, the Germans, although superior in numbers, were stopped by the Americans' well-prepared and deeply dug-in defensive positions. The German attack plans were not well coordinated and frustrated by the rugged terrain, built-up areas around the twin villages, and massed American artillery firepower positioned behind Elsenborn Ridge. American artillery batteries repeatedly pounded the German advance. While the Germans employed an effective combined arms tactic and penetrated the U.S. lines several times, the Americans called in indirect fire on their own positions, pushing the Germans back. U.S. reserve forces consisting of clerks and headquarters personnel were rushed in at one point to reinforce the 395th Infantry Regiment's lines. Although the Germans possessed superior armor, they were held in check by the innovative American tactics, including better communications, coordinated time on target artillery strikes, new proximity fuses for artillery shells, and superior air power.

(https://cmp-gaming.com/applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/240mm_howitzer.jpg&key=025081a2563af88e5e96cecf4bcae3749e045ebf47d934531d0138d491c93d6d) (https://cmp-gaming.com/applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ee/46/9c/ee469c9f8458ee1d2a73a0cd5e11eff2.jpg&key=ec7bcdf8c9a37ea3c7f53c47eeacbafe1482c052dff41328bcd0e1ededc10366)

The Sixth Panzer Army was unable to break through and take its immediate objectives on the Meuse River. The stubborn American resistance forced Kampfgruppe Peiper to choose an alternative route well south of Monschau and Elsenborn Ridge. As a result, the German forces were strung out over miles of winding, single-track roads, unable to concentrate their armored units. Peiper's units were repeatedly stymied by U.S. Army engineers, who blew essential bridges along their route of advance. One column of roughly 40 tanks and support vehicles was destroyed on 17 December when they were discovered by an L4 air observer of the 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion, assigned to the 102nd Cavalry Group. They were attacked by the 62nd's 105 howitzers mounted on M7 SP's, Corps 155's and Army 240's. The panzers finally reached the Amblève River, only about halfway to the Meuse River, but ran out of fuel. Food and ammunition also ran low. After 10 days, the German forces had been reduced to an ineffective strength and withdrew. The Americans had about 5,000 casualties; while exact German losses are not known, they included significant amounts of armor. While the Americans had considerable supplies and enough troops to re-equip their forces, German losses could not be replaced.

History

In August 1944, the first clashes took place on the Siegfried Line; the section of the line where most fighting took place was the Hürtgenwald (Hürtgen Forest) area in the Eifel, 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Aachen. The Aachen Gap was the logical route into Germany's Rhineland and a main industrial area, and was therefore where the Germans concentrated their defence. The Americans committed an estimated 120,000 troops plus reinforcements to the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. The battle in this heavily forested area claimed the lives of 24,000 American soldiers plus 9,000 of so-called nonbattle casualties—those evacuated because of fatigue, exposure, accidents, and disease. The German death toll is not documented.

(https://s25.postimg.org/d6n24d5x7/image.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/d6n24d5x7/) (https://s25.postimg.org/beu39izfv/image.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/beu39izfv/) (https://s25.postimg.org/75pd7c1bf/image.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/75pd7c1bf/) (https://s25.postimg.org/brlhfoukb/2_2.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/brlhfoukb/) (https://s25.postimg.org/wohpkbakr/image.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/wohpkbakr/)

After the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge began, starting in the area south of the Hürtgenwald, between Monschau and the Luxembourgish town of Echternach. This offensive was a last-ditch attempt by the Germans to reverse the course of the war in the West. German loss of life and materiel was severe in the failed effort.
There were serious clashes along other parts of the Siegfried Line and soldiers in many bunkers refused to surrender, often fighting to the death. By early 1945 the last Siegfried Line bunkers had fallen at the Saar and Hunsrück.

American units serving under British and Canadian command during the campaign incurred thousands more casualties, bringing total American losses to approximately 68,000. To this figure should be added the number of nonbattle casualties. The First Army incurred over 50,000 nonbattle casualties; the Ninth Army over 20,000. Thus the over-all cost of the Siegfried Line Campaign in American personnel was close to 140,000.
