Anyone having the feeling that when you are in a Sherman you're in a paper bag wrapped with aluminum foil?

I couldn´t have described it better...but it is as it has to be...
Even if,in a Panzer III for example,I don´t feel the same, even if the resistance to shells is the same.

Thats what a sherman was late war.

When it was introduced, it was a +1 tank.
Even those long barreled panzer IV's had problems with them.

Plus its gun could rip trough any german tank at that time. And the tiger tank, it was not very common. The US Department guessed that not much of them would be build. And they where right. Untill 1943 the Sherman was a good tank.

Untill the panther tank came to the fields. The US department thought that it would be "another complicated heavy tank".

They where deeply wrong. Sure the Sherman could one shot kill a panther from the sides (unlike FH2,  the panther had most of its ammo stored in those areas) But if you count that on D-day, of the Tanks itself (StuGs not included) that their where 40% panzer IV's, 10% tigers, 10% Panzer III... and 40% Panthers....

That 120MM frontal armor with the KWK43 7.5CM gun simply ate shermans.

You can guess now the high losses of Sherman tanks.... High silouette. The 91MM frontal turret armor was pretty good, but the 60MM frontal armor, wich make up the far majority of the target......
Shermans wherent upgraded much aswel.

Take the T-34 for instance. At the start, it had 60MM sloped armor, but a 1944 T-34 model already had 100MM frontal armor and an 85MM gun.

By D-day, only 3000 shermans armed with the 76MM gun where built, while 11000 T-34/85 where already ready by that date.

Sherman tanks are good. The best tanks, imo, still against AT guns, statics, infantery and Flag assault support, but when you encounter german armor, especialy Panthers, simply= Run. And if you can, Grab a cromwell, or a 76MM sherman, or its variants. Hell, if i had to choose between a greyhound and a Sherman, my choise would be made quickly

Thats what many allied tankers did anyway. They knew their 75MM guns where completly useless against the frontal armor, and they simply Avoided german armor.

The Sherman was also a product of its owner -- the U.S. had to ship those tanks over an ocean (or two) to get into battle.  The lighter, the better for logistics purposes.  Same with Japanese tanks.

Russian and German tanks rolled off the assembly lines almost into battle.

There's a grim reason why germans called the american Sherman "Tommy Cooker".

I was trying to get better at tanking and a Sherman is not the best training vehicle, as I found out yesterday. I'm not sure if anyone has posted a tutorial on tanking but does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve?

Just one word, flank. If you are using a fast vehicle such as a Puma or Greyhound; use the speed to your advantage. If the tank sees you then run away through a hedge road or something and appear with a tungsten core ammunition (You have around 5 rounds) and fire to the rear. In Puma case that is armed with a better gun, it can take Shermans, Cromwells and light tanks like the Stuart with normal APCR ammunation from sides and rear; Stuart one shot to the frontal armor is enough to knock it out.

With the Greyhound I dont have much experience because my lack of interest in playing with the allies, so I barely got to use that vehicle around 10 times only.

Now if you are using german armor its a different history...just one word...Stug. Use that tank, its pretty powerful and take out every single ally armor in one shot except for the Churchill so aim for the turret and the sides to kill it with one shot, or load tungsten core ammo for a quick kill. Its really my favorite tank killer.

If you're in a sherman and come across a german aim for the weakspots circled in the pics, all these are one hit kills and can save your bacon if you get surprised by one of these tanks head to head. Plus always move after making a kill if your tanking never stay in the same spot.

And if you're a german and come across a sherman....

The greyhound is faster and smaller. It is worser against tanks, but better against infantery + light vehicles.

When driving the greyhound, and you encounter the following tanks=
Panzer IV=Go for the rear armor.2 shots and its gone.
STuG 3= go to its rear, it is dead then. Fire at the rear SUPERSTRUCTURE. Not the Rear hull armor, the Rear Superstructure
Panther tank= Ignore it. Just run. Dont bother engaging this unit.

As for tanking. The best vehicles are either the Churchill(as they can take shots) or the Panther tank.

If you can, stay away from the sherman armed with the 75MM gun. If you see a firefly or a M4A1 (76)  take those.

I would advise staying away from tigers and M10's. The tiger can be a deadly thing, but if you are not carefull, just like the M10, you can be destroyed pretty fast. Get to know the regular tanks first(Cromwell, panther, panzer IV) and then move on to the others.

Also, go to multiplayer, then choose "Create local" . Take a good tanking map, and go testing for a bit. Learn to know where what gun damages what. Drive around with all tanks, and test out their mobility.

There's a grim reason why germans called the american Sherman "Tommy Cooker".

The main reason for that was that shermans were prone to burst into flames when hit, either from the engine combusting or their ammunition. Roasting the crew and everyone around it before they even had a chance to make their escape.

Same reason why they were also known as Ronsons, a cig' lighter company at the time who's slogan was: “…lights the first time, every time,”
