Awesome update, devs. The modelling and texturing are perfect as always.

I nearly broke my head trying to figure out what the letters on the mine meant and it turns out they are just the batch number (since they vary on different screenshots of the same mine). Because otherwise I can't think of the words that could start with these letters and still make sense on this mine :)

Yeah, you damn Valve fuckers, you just want to let those damn gamers buy all your games.

On a sale..

Usually at 75% discount...

For new games as well as for old ones (which are already pretty cheap by then)...

You so suck, Valve. Let us do it the nice EA way, let us have our sale!.. Nah, screw this, those stupid fans (ohh, the real fans Natty was talking about) will buy our games/DLCs at full price, just to stay competitive. And yes, I noticed they offered to sell games at 50% discount each. Buy Modern Warfighter and BF3 together and save 50% on each. I wonder how many ppl actually did that. But at least you tried. Keep moving in that direction, EA, you might eventually get to where Valve is now (and that will benefit you just as much as it did to Valve, I'm confident in that).

It is not that EA is doing wrong things like trying to innovate by introducing a new social feature like battlelog (which was an interesting idea) or come up with a competitive distribution engine such as Origin (and competetion is supposedly good for the customer). It is that they are doing these interesting thing worng...

I am diappointed that EA wants to squeeze the very last dollar of everything and FAILING at it. DRM, first-day DLC, nasty Origin, sack of small development teams everybody loved, and more. Just do a quick check at Yahoo Finance (or any other engine) and compare EA (former ERTS), ATVI (Activision-Blizzard), TTWO (Take-Two Interactive) and ^IXIC (NASDAQ, it does not correlate well with Dow Jones for some reason) for the last 5 years. You will be all scared. Well, the shares do not reflect the fans. They reflect how the company is percieved by "everybody". Apparently "everybody" don't think things are run perfectly well.

You know why I'm disappointed? Because if EA really fails, DICE will too and there will be no good BF games then. What we fans here want is for DICE to succeed. And doing that comes from listening closely to the fans and doing what you are good at, using your own own great ideas, which brought us some of the great games to enjoy. But then again, EA is the boss, and I'm afraid this is not going to happen :( Not just chasing the MW game series or Steam distribution.

Disclaimer:
1) I am a BF fan and I own BF1942, BF2 and BF3
2) Steam is decent IMO, although there are a few qualms here and there
3) I had to cope with Origin to be able to play BF3 and ME3

P.S. Not your problem, Natty, really, and I'm not adressing it to you, mostly my big sigh at how things are run now at EA.

EDIT: going to the last Natty's post "When someone makes claims that Valve isnt this holy-cow that worships the ground that modders walk (which is the public image they cleverly managed to build over 15 years), they get all tear-filled in the eyes"
When something looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, swims like a duck. Well, chances are - it is a duck. And even if it is not - do we care? It is a duck for us, for all intents and purposes. Even if we all live in a Matrix.

2Natty:

Well, let others argue about your latter points, but the first one about true fans is totally wrong. You know, a lot of people now hate Putin, our president, and for a good reason. So what they say?

"Come on, if you are real patriots of your country, you MUST love him, because he is now your current presinent!".

I think that this logic is flawed. However, I could be wrong ;)

Natty, I would agree with others with having more faction-specific wearpons, this really added flavor to BF2. Faction-specific unlocks would be even better.

And, I think I haven't said that before, you finally nailed the voice recording right. I mean, these are the best Russian voice actors I have heard so far. This was really good. One bad thing, though - why everybody speaks the same language? Come on, I could perfectly comprehend those Iranian fighters in BF2 :)
Same here - hearing enemy soldiers speaking Russian is totally weird, besides now I have no idea if something was said by an enemy or by an ally.

Off-Topic / Re: Questions about tanks
« on: 05-11-2012, 03:11:37 »
In a "free for all" type scenario (which means you don't have many qualms shooting into a high-rise) a tank in a city is very useful. I am talking about modern tanks now. At times, a tank is the only way to get rid of a "dug-in" team of determined defenders. In WW2 this was hardly possible, but modern 120-125 mm guns have a very nice amount of explosives in their HE shells. Simply put, not a single hand-held charge (with the possible exception of certain thermobaric charges) can do that much destruction.

It is just extremely important to protect the tanks really well. They should work as mobile arty platforms: move into position with protected flanks, fire a few HE shells, let the infantly advance.

In fact a combination of a good inf support team and a tank worked wonders in the First Chechen War. The most tank losses came when the inf support was in-adequate (fresh conscripts) or non-existent.

Another tactic is shooting around the corner, much like you would do in BF :) The main difference was that this was performed by several tanks rolling around the corner at once to increase the HE effect on target and decrease the probability of multiple RPGs being shot at the same tank.

Mmm. But if they weigh the same - why the hell not? :)

Which bring me to one of the greatest annoyances (for me) in BF3 - faceless soldiers. I mean, ALL of them have some sort of masks, like they are some mosters from a 3rd rate FPS. "Things to kill". BF2 had open faces - did anybody care they were the same? No. I'm sure multiple random faces can be implemented for those who care.

Also, I think this is a bad idea of announcing a sequel so early. People are much less likely to buy BF3 DLCs, because why bother - the game will be obsolete in less than a year.

I like that DICE realized that a commander is the core of BF gameplay, i.e. teamplay. Integrated VOIP would be nice as well, as only about 5% of people bother to create a Vioce chat team in Battlelog.

Well, concerning those religious "laws", the best thing I have ever heard was a story from a friend of mine (me lived in Israel for a long time, even fought in the 2nd Lebanon war) about pork in Israel. Apparently Torah or some other book of high significance says that "no pig shall walk on the land of Israel". Well, no problem, they grow pigs on elevated wooden platforms, so they never touch the ground in their lifespan.

Concerning muslims in Russia (not sure about the former USSR), I am yet to find one that DID NOT DRINK. I know, this must be Russian influence, but still...

Jagermeister... I used to like it, but then stopped :) In fact, a lot of my friends totally hate it. One guy decided to be smart and bought a bottle of Jagermeister for one of the New Year parties we had 2 years ago (we selebrated New Year on the 31st of December, 1st, 2nd and 12th of January - the latter being the New Year according to the Julian calendar XD ). Everybody was choosing a bottle of hard liqior at the shop so that it is all consumed together. So there it went, we drank all of our Russian vodka, then some whiskey (not sure about the brand), then Henessy (my pick), then all the wine appropriated from the poor girls and even the beer we had stashed after some other occasion. So in the end the only bottle standing was Jagermeister. The dude thought that nobody would drink it besides him. Wrong! Everybody drank it and then they've been cursing him for several hours, because they still hated it. Well, for a true Russian, no alcohol is bad enough ;)
P.S. The wine appropriation was a win-win scenario, since we needed the girls to be sober to be able to bring all of the "animals" back to their respective homes.

General Discussion / Re: Where are the Bombers?
« on: 14-09-2012, 13:09:01 »
I'd still like to see an airborne escort mission, at least one tiny one. Make an extremely long  map covered with water except for a mainland and factory objectives. Bombers go up with 6 players in each bomber, fighter planes escorting. God that'd be awesome to see the tracers cover the sky when you see a wave of german fighters scramble from the mainland airfield and attack the British/American bomber escort. Flak exploding all over the place while the bombers stay on course towards the objective. Planes spiraling down to earth with smoke trailing behind. Hah! Makes me so excited just talking about them.

Apparently, you never had the chance to play the "bombing of Constanza" map. And yes, I agree, because flying in DB3 was awesome!

Lies! ;)
I only had about 60 kills and less than half of those were from commander arty. Honestly, I was shocked to see so many people killed by the arty, given there were about 15 players per team. You had two hangars and plenty of trenches to hide in and I was carefully planning my strikes based on the positions of my teammembers (and your AT arty installations, yes ;) ). I was having lunch, so I was not completely bored XD

Yep, killing or even helping in M&B feels very rewarding. Once I managed to stop a breach of 6 enemy warriors on our castle all alone. Killed 5 and the last dude routed :)
Felt like a god.

Napoleon has been really good, I have to admit. I am finishing it on VH/VH for the third time and it was great fun. Multiplayer has been quite playable as well, although I still don't like the fact that you can see everything that is going on at the battlefield. I remember that in Medieval One you could easily loose track of an enemy unit when it was BEHIND and not necessarily INSIDE a forest.

What you can do to get the most out of Napoleon multiplayer, however, is to set up a historical scenario game with large units and at least 6 players (better 8). Then you completely loose control of the battlefield, like it was in reality. I saw some crazy things like allied cavs being wiped out since they ran in the line of my cannon fire or my own troops getting ripped to pieces since some dude decided to help my melee with his howitzers with explosive shells. But on the other hand I saw some incredible action like double-pronged attack with complete enemy encirclement or allies covering my troops leaving battle for regrouping.

Unfortunately, I still greatly miss the amazing campaigns of Medieval One (which is bug-free on WIN7, so I still play it). It was the only game where your whole province would rebel, not just a few random stacks here and there with some uber units. A game, where spies DID matter (remember, they had this option of advising you of enemy attack preparations, now this is depth!), where you had gazillions of generals and administrators and you could micromanage them all, give them provinces and titles and then stirip them off when they become too corrupt. Accuse your own generals of treason and execute you sons, who are just way too eager to start their reign. Bribing neutral generals without spending exorbitant sums of money. And then, finally, have your glorious stable empire crumble, because your monarch died at the most unfortunate moment, because it did often happen in reality. And many more (i.e. inquisitors burning and priests protecting, assassins murdering and spies and ambassadors counterspying, etc.).

I really miss all those options...

Off-Topic / Re: Review the latest movie you have seen

"Here be dragons"

A wonderful representation of a story of two former friends, who find themselves in the middle of Spanish Civil War. Little or no heroism, just life, as it could be for a rich dude who found himself among the fascists trying to restore his position in the society and for a priest, who is doing his duty of looking for christian souls in Madid in times of war.

What is peculiar about the movie is nice attention to detail (like the T-26 tankers speaking in Russian, although the whole background scene is no more than a few seconds), military equipment, which, luckily for all of us, is becoming a norm rather than something unusual as it used to be a few decades ago.

The final touch why I liked the movie is that the main character, who is on the fascist side, is shown as an utter scum (although some communist militiamen are not much better), while two other charismatic "good" characters are fighting on for other side. Given that I greatly sympathize with the Republicans, it was quite enjoyable :)
