Off-Topic / Re: Mafia II: Guns, Booze, Demo!
« on: 19-08-2010, 10:08:37 »
Mafia was the last singleplayer game that I really enjoyed. It certainly had it's flaws but the overall experience was just great.
It really has been 8 years that I played a good sp game?
I have high hopes on Mafia 2 to end my waiting time.
Have to get rid of the time limit any play it again now.

Modding / Re: Max viewdistance?
« on: 14-08-2010, 10:08:10 »
What would you like to have a viewdistance of 2km for?
700-800m is the very maximum distance you will be able to see and engage other players anyways. And that is with zoomed weapons like tank guns and clear line of sight only.
It makes no sense to go above that viewdistance.

I don't expect BF3 to be a game I like to play or to use a suitable engine to build a mod on.
I'll be glad if it turns out different.
But that I will see when I have access to beta, demo or game files for the first time.
Till then BF3 is nothing that I waste much time thinking about.
Have already seen to many generated hypes and heard to many promises that have not been kept in the 8 year BF history.

Since quite some time time I'm looking for the German movie "Kinder, Mütter und ein General".
Sadly it seems not available on DVD. But is has been shown on TV several times in the past.
Is there anybody who recorded it and could maybe send me a copy?
From the short part you can see on youtube it looks more than promising, especially the outfit of the German soldiers. Look like lots of original items have been used.

General Discussion / Re: When was FH first released?
« on: 05-08-2010, 11:08:54 »
The first version of Forgotten Hope, FH 0.5b was released on September 27th 2003.
A series of patches, mostly to fix broken things followed immediatly. FH 0.5c, FH 0.5d and FH 0.5e were relesed within 1 month.
A time that certainly changed my PC habits.

Crickets had been overdone in FH1. Since back then I have a cricketphobia and can't hear that sound without going nuts.  ::)

I have once been told to do a Normandy map called Operation Goodwood. First I was like, wtf?
You can't represent a major offensive that had fighting over several days in a area of approx. 200 square kilometers in one bf2 map. I did that before and I hated it.
Then I have been told that we need the big names of the big offensives to get the attention of players who in most instances don't have a clue what e.g. the "23rd Hussards and Fife and Forfars attack on Cagny" is, but at least at one point catched up the name Operation Goodwood or are smart enough to find information about it in a couple of seconds thanks to google.
Well then, Operation Goodwood it had to be. It was really not my thing to try to represent such a big operation but if it is best for the popularity of the mod I had to try my best, knowing that I would definitly not do the mistake to scale everything down again like I did on Alam Halfa.
I was reading up about Operation Goodwood and got more information about the major battles during the operation. In the end I decided to do the area around Cagny because much action was going on there, the happenings there in my opinion decided the outcome and i was able to create a nice map with good locations without having to differ to much from the real place.
So what you got with Operation Goodwood is a map named after a offense but representing a battle.

Modding / Re: Editing FH2 - existing map Problem
« on: 05-07-2010, 12:07:03 »
The map doesn't come with a GamePlayObjects.con in the editor folder. Create that folder, then copy and paste GamePlayObjects.con from the Gamemodes folder of the version you want to edit.

Community Polls / Re: The over-abundance of G43s
« on: 05-07-2010, 11:07:54 »
For Normandy there is not much to think about. A clear vote for option 2. The G43 was very scarce and in my opinion has no place in the spawn menu, not even as a limited spawnclass.
If the map doesn't work without it, it is the maps problem. Design the maps that they work with the weapons historically used at the time the map is set.

Talking about 0.4 ratio on limited kits. They are useless, even on late war maps when those weapons were more common. You always have to look at the whole thing. On the example of Lüttich you see that with a 0.4 ratio on a full server you will have 14 G43. Add 9 MP40, 4 MG42 and 4 Panzerfausts. That sums up to 31 players being able to use one of the limited kits. Where is the limitation?
In my opinion the ratio on any limited spawnclass should never exceed 1.6 which on a full server allows 6 people to use that class. Exception could of course be made on maps that feature units, it is known that they were especially well equipped.

When the G43 is used as spawnclass on later maps it should in my opinion not replace the regular K98 rifleman. To put it in the scout class certainly is a option but I have my doubts. If you put it there you have to limit the class.
Can those few  people who will get that class provide artillery with enough targets? I think 99% of the players who choose it do so because they want better firepower, not the ability to spot targets.
Another thing I could imagine is removing the engineer class from the spawn menu and replace it with the limited G43 class that we have now. In my opinion the engineer is not really needed on the later maps. His mines already got removed for Normandy because of the maps being much more narrow.
The Geballte Ladung he has now is of course fun but in the matter of gameplay rather insignificant. The only thing that is important on the engineer is the wrench. But that could easily be issued by pickup ammokits at static defences and pickup pilot and tanker kits at vehiclespawns.

Something like this:

push + spawnpoints not at the flag that is being attacked/defended + big capping radius + multiple people needed to capture =  ;)

FH is a realism mod. Of course not everything can be 100% realistic, but the ammo load out currently is probably the most arcarde feature of the mod.
There is absolutely no need to balance tanks with the amount of ammunition they have.
If mappers know about the strength of the vehicles they place on their maps, everything can be easily balanced by the mapper.
I never really red anything about the availability of HVAP ammunition or the PzGr40. But I always had the feeling that what we have now is utter bullshit.
Now that I spent just 10 minutes to read some Osprey books that I thought might deal with that issue I know that my feeling was more than apposite.

Here are some quotes:

Sherman 76mm:

"The first distribution of HVAP ammunition to tank units took place in Beglium on September 11, 1944 to the 3rd Armored Division and the 746th Tank Battalion."
"it was never available in adequate quantities - hardly one round per vehicle per month"
"By the end of February 1945, each 76mm tank had received, on average, only five rounds HVAP."

(Source: M4 (76mm) Sherman Medium Tank 1943-65)

M10 and M36:

"The first 2,000 rounds of T4 ammunition for the 3-inch and 76mm guns were air delivered in August 1944, but in fact did not become widely available until November 1944."
"In September 1944,ETOUSA headquarters cabled back to the United States that they needed 43,000 rounds evenly split between 3-inch and 76mm guns, by January 1945, and 10,000 rounds monthly after that.
However, tungsten was in such short supply that through early March 1945, only about 18,000 rounds arrived in Europe, including about 10,500 rounds for the M10 tank destroyers"
"The new T30E16 90mm HVAP ammunition for the M36 gun finally gave the tank destroyers the ability to penetrate the glacis plate at a range of about 450 yards and started to become available in January 1945."

(Source: M10 AND M36 TANK DESTROYERS 1942-53)

This means that in our current scenario (Normandy), the only tank that is supposed to even have HVAP ammo is the M10.
And with a rough calculation of the 10500 rounds produced till March 1945 divided through the approximately 700 M10's used  at the same time between August and March (Source: M10 AND M36 TANK DESTROYERS 1942-53), divided through 7 months from the start of availability in August to March, we get ~2.14 rounds per M10 per month.

All of our featured battles just lasted a couple of days. But of course we have to remember that on the maps there are less tanks than in reality and that  everything is somewhat scaled down.
Give those M10's 2-3 shots of HVAP and save that ammunition for other tanks for later battles.

I'm sure it is a similar thing with the PzGr40 and British ammunition, but I didn't read that up.

Server is full, but i couldn't stand it for more than 30 minutes. I'm just one of the worst pilots ever.
AA wasn't much fun either because the one gun I manned (Radar2), no enemy plane would ever come to and the other gun I manned was coninously attacked by more than 4 enemy planes (Radar3). Not much you can do against them.

@ Knoffhoff, that looks to me like the Type 1 light parka (only 2 layers of HBT cloth, no wool sandwiched between), especially judging by the cuffs, the pockets, button fly, and the buttoned on ID bands.  The snow suits were usually in field jobs, so things like pockets, button fly, hood, and ID bands aren't gonna be seen much.

I really have no clue what a Type 1 light parka is supposed to be. Another thing that some english speaking guy had to invent a name for to confuse people?
On the pic you can see a Schneehemd which was factory made and existed in different variations. None of them are reversible.
