It's all a load of BS anyway, if the government was serious about saving energy, they'd ban the sale of electronic equipment that doesn't have an ON/OFF switch for starters.
I was very close to putting my widescreen Samsung TV back in the box and returning it when I discovered it didn't have one (thus it's on permanent stand-by)...

Pull out the plug then.  :P

Come on, this unit cost my company aprox. 50k € and it loses quite a bit of energy due to us having a flat roof, a unit of half the size is enough for a normal German household and would have a higher efficiency due to most houses here having 30Deg roofs and being orientated in North-South direction. I know of people who spent more money on a bomb shelter, so why not use the money to make yourself free from those greedy energy companies?! ^^

I might be wrong here, but doesn't german law prohibit you using the energy produced by your solar unit to power your electric circuits?
As far as I know you are, instead, required to feed the electricy you produce into the grid and get a certain fee per kW. You are only allowed to utilize your solar power yourself if you use it to produce warm water to substitute heating with gas or oil.

Sure you are right, but I meant my point in a broader sense. Atm we basically pay for our power, with the money that we earn through our solar array. So it doesn't really matter if the electrons first leave the building, what matters is that the capacity to run autonomous is there. :)

here in Vancouver a 4-pack of 60w bulbs cost around $3 and will last me a long time and also do a good job of heating up my house.

the compact fluorescent bulbs cost about $5-6 for one bulb, they dont fit into any of my light diffuser's and the landlord won't pay to replace any of the light fixtures. CFL bulbs also make me violently ill, take forever to warm up, and do not provide a quality of light that I can appreciate.

thank god for Chinese dollar stores that don't give 2 shits about the environment.

Personally i don't blame the humble lightbulb at all, I blame perpetually on devices like TV's and fridges, PC's, charger devices and careless homeowner's that leave everything on.  it is 2 in the morning here and half of downtown is lit up clear as day, yet hardly a soul is awake. Our hypocrisy boggles my mind sometimes!!!

Agreed on every point. And also I think the filament lightbulbs we have today are a scam... They shouldn't burn out so quickly. Check out this baby, 110 years and still working!

Only problem with switching it off everytime I'm finished with the TV, etc., is the powerboard that all the "permanent stand-by"  stuff is plugged into is behind a rather large entertainment unit thingy.

It's not on wheels and I have to do my best contortionist impression just to reach the board, so...but then if I was overly concerned about conserving power I wouldn't be running an overclocked PC... ;)

@sheik: Agreed, CFL "bulbs" are horrible. The halogen ones are better, though still pricey, and the best part is they are an actual bulb, so they fit anywhere the filament bulbs did.

@Zoo: A couple of months ago, I heard the monorail is going to be torn down and the tram/light rail network is going to be extended.

It never really was a success, not sure why, high ticket prices and a poor station layout I think.

Yeah, if you're lucky enough to live/work close to it, it's pricey but it works. Problem is, there's so many areas where it's just not a viable option.

One week 'til winter and it's already too cold... :P

No excuses.

For books: Simon Beckett "The Chemistry of Death" is good if you are into crime stuff and want to know how bodies decay.

Yeah. I just came home, brought up a newspage, saw that there was the songcontest with a winner being choosen. So I was curious, wanted to have a look at the song.

Gawd, it is worse than DJ Bobo. Being worse than DJ Bobo is a remarkable achievement in terms of failure. Honestly, I'd prefer listening to a jack-hammer instead.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom
