My grandfather passed away last thursday. Alzheimer and korsakov were found last year. Barely anything left of him, both physically and mentally.
Ever since the disease took hold, memories surfaced from him. Aswel as traumas. The germans were stationed right next to his farm in WW2 (Keerbergen). They once took cattle and various other products. Second time they tried to take Cattle, a german Oberleutnant stopped them, telling them that taking these things was considered theft in his eyes (appearntly the officer was himself, a farmer).
He never told me, but in his confusion, he mentioned somewhat, that he was beaten. He once mentioned he found a german machinepistol. But it was not an MP40. As he said the one he found had a wooden stock.
In his confusion, he said he "fired it". Something he never told me aswel.
And well, the bombardments also came back. Funny tough, several times he farted himself awake, and he tought the germans were back. Leading to much laughing with my sister & me.
He was a tough old goat alright. May he rest in peace.
