The Next Three Days

Prison-break movie by Paul Haggis (Crash, Traffic). It's about a school teacher (Russel Crowe) who tries to get his wife (Elizabeth Banks) out of prison. She's been (wrongfully?) sentenced to life and after all legal options are exhausted he decides to spring her out of jail.
It's a solid movie, well written and with a good story, but it feels a little like the director/writer could've made it a bit leaner. It clocks in at 2 1/2 hours which you hardly notice because the movie is so well made, but it borders on pretentiousness. Even with this length Haggis had to cut some corner's plot-wise, so it's not perfect or anything. What made it work for me where the chemistry between the actors and the writing. It just feels real. It's nice to see Russel Crowe actually act again. He makes a believable everyman who is driven solely by the love for his wife without relying on schmaltzy ticks or traits. Elizabeth Banks in her turn is slowly and sneakily proving herself to be one of the more interesting (and better) actresses around today (reminds me of Rosario Dawson a couple of years ago - suddenly she's popping up in all these cool movies). Whether it's high profile political drama (Laura Bush in W), indy comedy fare (Kevin Smith's Zack & Miri Make A Porno) or scene stealing cameo's (40 year Old Virgin, 30 Rock, Scrubs, etc.), she makes it work. And she's kinda hot too. :)

So a nice 7 out of 10, I guess. You have to want to go along for the ride, but thanks to the actors it's hardly a chore. These kind of movies fall into the same group as disaster movies or rom-coms. You kind of expect how it's gonna end, but if done right, you don't mind at all.

Yeah, it was enjoyable but "Truly an unique special film. I dint expected a single scene of this movie"? C'mon, that's the Fallout junkie in you talking, right? ;)  Watch this together with The Road and you basically have Fallout - The Movie.  :)
I like how I even liked it better the 2nd viewing. First time around I was indeed hoping for a Fallout kind of movie (like a big scale story, with different factions and such) but the second time around I knew what was coming and could appreciate the movie itself better.

But, to stay on topic:

Cyrus [2010]
Sweet little movie about a middle age divorcee (John C Reilly - Boogie Nights, Talladega Nights, The Aviator, etc.) who's fallen into a depression after his wife left him....7 years ago. He finally meets a new woman (überMILF Marisa Tomei - The Wrestler, My Cousin Vinnie) but things get complicated when he meets her grown-up son who still lives at home. The son, played by Jonah Hill (Superbad, Get Him To The Greek, Knocked Up), of course has issues with his mom's new friend (who wouldn't with a mom that hot, haha) and what follows is a lovely but awkward comedy.

Of course we've seen stuff like this before, but the way the movie focusses on details and lets the actors actually act makes it stand out. The characters are somehow real and human despite the somewhat cliché plot, and they make it work. John C Reilly just pwns parts like this, and he deserves a chance to headline a movie. Jonah Hill downplays it wonderfully and never becomes an unbelievable charicature. And Marisa Tomei...*sigh*...

A solid 7/10.

well, take the flying tank scene, and the container ship scene, those are a bit more then just cutting a few corners for the sake of entertainment.

It does not have to be completely realistic, but come on, don't over do it.

Are you kidding? Come on it was a really fun movie :D You know sometimes fun>realism

Dazed & Confused
- Coming of age movie packed with young actors that would later become big stars.

Takes place at the last days of school, seen through the high school seniors and the juniors as well.

It's really good actually, slow tempo with teenagers doing nothing but it actually works!

Extra credits for Matthew McConaughey appearance as David, the adult who doesn't wanna grow up and still hangs with the local high school teenagers

Zombieland

Good acting, on par with Shaun of the Dead in the "yuks-meet-yucks" department.  Also made me want to play Left 4 Dead.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Cons:
I really wish Disney hadn't picked this movie up; it's filming style is so disgustingly American. They're trying to tell something that could go on to make a great two, maybe two-and-a-half hour movie and squishing it all down to meet the more efficient 1.5 hour-long 'keep the attention spans short and leave room for ads when it comes out on Network TV' generic action-adventure movie.  I don't have any issues with the acting, but really the casting.  Prince of Persia is supposed to be just that.  Persian.  Not Jake-freaking-Gyllenthal with a tan.  The only people I know for sure are actually slightly middle-eastern are the crooks in the movie (ostrich-racer guy, for example).  If you're going to make a film set actually in Iran and about Iranians, you really shouldn't have to do the same thing they did in Aladdin-That is, have the people that look stereotypically middle-eastern the bad guys.

Pros:
The acting was pretty good, and the CGI was used fairly well and It didn't seem too distracting.  It was actually useful in telling the story and they didn't pull a Jar-Jar with it, either.  The soundtrack, like most other movies was pretty good.

In short:  The movie is much too condensed, the camera angles are generic and uninventive, The casting was borderline racist, the acting was decent, the CGI worked well, and I liked the music.

Babylon AD   Quite bad. Alot of not too intresting action and a quite standard story. I guess a movie with Vin Diesel in a major role never can be the best.                5/10

The day the earth stood still Very good movie. Even if i think Keanu Reeves suck, in this movie he was quite good. Though i guess his role are very simple to play. The story wasnt very original, but still quite good. I like these movies where earth stand on the brink of destruction. It had a quite good mood.   8/10

The Island   Quite good movie. The beginning is awesome, while the longer into the movie you get, the more standard it gets with alot of driving/running/falling/shooting action constantly. I think the story is awesome, but except for the beginning it doesnt really have a good mood, and the acting is very "hollywood". But all in all i liked it quite much              7/10

Crank 2: High Voltage

Warning: do not watch movie on serious movie friday or before midnight at any given day.
I like Jason Statham, can't help it. I liked Crank, ridiculous movie but I really enjoyed it. Crank 2 however is just trying too damn hard. It's like a Chinese iPod copy, it works okay, it looks okay but it feels cheap and you know it's cheap.

Still, this movie entertained me at 2 am after a very tiresome day. And entertaining is a movie's purpose.

5.5/10

The Men Who Stare At Goats

Awesome cast, I really like Spacey, Bridges and Clooney and McGregor is not bad either. Combined with a good nonsense story that probably contains more truth than I can ever imagine it managed to keep a smile on my face the entire movie.

This movie is an instant entry to my elitist list of favourites.

8/10

Bean

Always have been a great lover of mr. Bean and used to have this movie on VHS when I was a tiny Fuchs, in time it got lost and after refinding my mr. Bean collection of DVD's I decided to watch this movie again. I'm glad I did, brought back many laughs and good memories.

A short movie (1 hour and 30 minutes..) but certainly a very, very entertaining movie.

7/10

Inglourious Basterds

Finally got to pick this one up and watch it. I took my friends advice and put off my history Nazi mode and switched to Spaghetti Western mode, in that mode I watched this movie and it surely helped. The special effects are truely amazing and I'm glad to see some real effects and not just CGI.

It surely made me laugh alot, especially when Lt. Raine speaks Italian 'Bun Djurnoo'. And Tarantino's usual randomness (STIGLITZ *guitar*) contributed alot to that.

Very entertaining, not Tarantino's finest hour but not a black mark on his list either.
