WW2 Flight Simulator
« on: 27-12-2015, 04:12:46 »
Hey guys, I'm looking for help in finding a good WW2 Flight Simulator. I haven't gotten into flight sims for a long time but I was looking to see if there was a game worth buying that could get me back.

More specifically, does anyone know of any ww2 flight sims that take place in the Pacific. Being able to take hold of Japanese Zeros American Wildcats etc... ;D

I've been so glued to FH2 for the longest time, but I figured the people who play other games could give some suggestions. Let me know!

Easiest suggestion is IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946! It is almost ten years old but it is the definition of a simulator. I found a original disc and started playing just recently. I had to watch several videos on how to fly, it's not easy at first!

There are many mods. Since I had the original disc I was able to update from 4.07 to 4.12.1 and the mod pack HSFX will work (which seems to include the expansion Pacific Fights?). The Steam version will 4.13 and you will need a work-around for HSFX to work.

Finally these websites should be the most helpful with any questions you have.

It is really exciting flying around in a J2M!

War Thunder on simulator controls is a good more casual (and much prettier) alternative, if you can find a populated match...
This sentence is intentionally left unfinished...

You can tune IL-2 to be just as casual. In fact, IL-2 settings are much more customizable, eg. you can have fully realistic flight model but no engine management. Plus in IL-2 you'll have all the planes available at once, you don't have to grind for dozens of hours only to find out that the plane you got was not what you wanted after all.

If you are looking for an arcade (sim) shooter, Battlestations pacific is a great game. You can buy it for Xbox360 or PC. It is a mix of flying and cruising with battleships and carriers.

I am very much aware of the flexibility of IL-2 and the plethora of mods and missions available. I 'm just saying that War Thunder is a more recent (therefore prettier, but by no means better) contender in "casual flight sims" category.

You can also get Battlestations Pacific on PC as well. But I have mine on 360 as well.

LuckyOne, War Thunder does look great but I feel like having a free to play just means endless grinding for better planes. Il-2 has newer games too which aren't as popular but look and sound great.

IL-2 Birds of Prey was an attempt to casualize the series and was a terrible example how not to do it (the arcade mode is horrible and simulation mode even more because missions were balanced to be played with arcade realism), so it is a bad "casual" choice. Cliffs of Dover and Battle of Stalingrad are still buggy as frak and require a NASA supercomputer to run. And all these have way, way fewer planes and missions/campaigns available than 1946, even unmodded 1946. Sure, they are so much prettier, but that's about it.

It's an imperfect world we live in.

Thanks for the responses guys. It's kinda what I thought. IL-2 1946 is probably the best game out there with Pacific Battles atm.

War Thunder is fine and good, but it doesn't really offer historical battles. As in, you can use almost any plane on any battle regardless of if it was used during that battle or not.

I just wonder if they made a good, comprehensive game with Pacific battles lately that was more recent that IL-2. Seems not tho :P

Just get IL-2 1946 and navigate the SAS1946 forums

Find the mods you want and that's it.

And it doesn't limits itself to WW2 either...

Yes, Il-2 1946 with HSFX mod is all you need for WW2 flight sim.

My only complaints is typical to every flight sim available out there: rudder control is not like in the real world. Every flight sim I played on PC, often downplays the effect of rudder input. But still, Il-2 1946 is the best in terms of balance of everything.

There are certainly more realistic flight sims out there, but they are not as "Study" (giving you wide array of flyable planes) as the Il-2 series.

And Il2 1946 isn't unsupported, its updated every year or so since 1C gave full control to TD. And they're doing a magnificent job whether its re-texturing an old cockpit or completely re-coding physics. New micro patch should be out soonish™ with new flyable's L2D, Li-2, C-47, Bf-110 G-4, MBR-2, and Ju-88 C-6

http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/forumdisplay.php?f=202

Often HSFX works with TD to get the mod updated pretty fast but it's taken them a bit more time to update to 4.13, perhaps waiting for 4.13.1 dunno.

Sadly, they are still lacking in British bombers despite the numerous variants of Spitfire available in that game.

Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers is a good Pacific Theater game with nice story. I found it to be really fun to play.
