A question to FH developers ...
« on: 30-05-2009, 12:05:06 »
What are the skills / tools required for modding on this game ?

I've myself a quite good experience in modding even though the scale of the models is completly different (I'm a former developer of the Armees Fantomes Mod for Blitzkrieg. For those who don't know it was aimed at adding the French, Polish armies to the game, and improve the sort of available units in all armies, as long as sound and gameplay realism).

The point is that I have a bunch of quite rare documents on 1939-1940 French vehicles, and I might give some help in modelling if you're forseeing to add the Battle of France in FH2.  ;)

;) modding is the same all over the games. Mapping is generally the most different job.

About modeling/skinning you still have the 3dsmax/photosop(+dds plugin) couple.
About export plugin for 3dsmax are available.

A bf2 editor is available to test the export, code and make maps.

Of course polygon count change.

Well for pretty much any modding done in BF2, you'll need the latest version of the Battlefield 2 editor. For anything such as modeling, animating, or skinning, it would be a good idea to get the latest version of the PoE plugin for 3ds max.

As for skills just take a look at pretty much anything in the game to give you a reference point. FH2 currently is working on only Normandy, but if there are ever plans to include the early years of WWII, you should definitely send Lightning a pm. He's the military advisor/researcher guy of the team.

Lightning is a very flexible chap. He mostly crushes innocent dreams but he will also arrange test sessions and research for the mod. But yes, it mostly ends up in crushing someones dreams..

Taranov is the guy with the huge amount of references. Lightning knows his WW2 stuff aswell and sometimes helps with technical details, however is more active within public relations.

Hehe, I've done pretty all this, but not in BF2 yet  ;D

What I like most is to sweat for weeks on making a nearly forgotten vehicle or artillery gun, something that nobody would expect to see in game and maybe nobody even know  ;)

I've talked to Lightning, right now I'll first get all the necessary tools and get used to BF2 world, and then I'll come back to see if something about early war can be done.  :)

well we won't be making Early War (1939 etc) for FH2 in a long time, but sure you can make some stuff for it for practicing modelling/texturing if that is what you want to do.. Good Luck!

I meant that when I would be really sure I can do something useful about it I would come back and see if there are at least a few people that are interested in implementing early war.
Because let's be honest, if it's only to be in a sandbox and "practicing" on models that will never be used it's not worth wasting my time  ;)
