Developer Blogs / M11/39 and Cannone da 105/28
« on: 25-03-2012, 23:03:18 »
Here are two in-game screenshots of the new M11/39 and Cannone da 105/28. Both can be found on the upcoming map Battle of Keren.

I've had the chance to use the M11/39 a couple of times during test sessions. It's surprisingly fun to use and actually a decent opponent for the British armour... Just avoid the Matilda once it arrives.

For those who are interested in the battle itself, there's good newsreel footage available here: http://www.britishpathe.com/video/keren-occupied/query/Keren

The upcoming map Battle of Keren features unique statics made by Herc. The train station, located in the town Keren, is one of those statics. It's fully accessible and has a couple of interesting ways to sneak in and out. Here's a closer look:

Battle of Keren is an old fan map I made a few years back. After the release of 2.4, I decided to improve it and finally make it an official map. One of the things that has been added since then is a usable rail road. Now both teams can use trains as transport:

Can we see how the new push works?  :)
It's a small change, the German team needs an additional flag before they can attack the town. This makes the flag in the centre of the map less important and the other flags more interesting to capture.

To say my own personal opinion about this, if you start to clench your butthole over this, then its your goddamn problem:

I dont know if I fancy this new setup. Puma is alright, I mean it was already in the early beta and I was slightly disappointed to see it gone from actual release version. Wirbelwind, OK I guess. I'd personally just have the AA-halftrack instead because theres already the transport version of the same vehicle in the map. Save a texture load.

And then we have a chaffee too.  :-\
I don't mind hearing other opinions. The Wirbelwind actually uses the textures also used by the Panzer IV and Flak Vierling. And since the Puma replaces the halftrak you mention, the amount of vehicles (texture load) is the same but a lot more varied. The Chaffee only appears later in the game, so it's rare.

The next patch will include a small update for Bastogne. The most notable changes are the increased viewdistance, improved push and three vehicles that are new to this map:

The Puma was re-textured by Kev4000 and the Wirbelwind exported by Spit.

If the map is intended to be about the whole battle, and if we want the fighting to move into Bastogne proper more often, then I would suggest that after the "front" flags fall, Allied armour stops spawning (representing the siege), then a few minutes after Mont falls, will start respawning in Bastogne to represent the relief column.
During the siege there were still US tanks in and around Bastogne. Especially tank destroyers like the Hellcat played a key role in defending the town. So removing all of them is not needed.

I've seen both teams win. And I expect that the US team will defend the key flags better once they know the map better as well.

The P-47 feels quite awkward for this map, due to visual range and the speed of the plane + it's slow maneuvering speeds..
The view distance can be increased if players keep having problems with flying.

So for the allies "historical accuracy" is used..
The 76mm Jumbo was indeed replaced with a regular Jumbo because it was too rare. However, I can imagine that another Hellcat could have the same impact on the balance of this map.

We had small discussion on Hslan on the other day. So, why the planes?
You have to understand that this map is not just about the siege. It's about the entire battle, from the fighting that took place before the 101st even arrived to the US counter attack that lasted until January. During the first days the weather was bad, that is true. But later in the battle the weather improved and the P47s flew whenever possible.

I tried to recreate this by giving the US team planes that spawn only after several flags have been captured. And the German plane represents the bombings that the Luftwaffe carried out during the battle. I'll admit it's still debatable how many planes should be on this map (if any). I think the current amount is reasonable at least.

How big is the map?
Around size of Op. Cobra.. maybe bigger.
Yes, the size is about the same as Operation Cobra. It has push so the front will move gradually from east to west (and back once the US start their counter attack).

what other maps were made by schism?
Port-en-Bessin. Which is the complete opposite when it comes to the amount of vehicles :)

The 3kg one could also have a stickie bomb near it with "Stuck to you" on it.  ;)

'For those sticky situations'. You could probably start a franchise based on sticky bomb shirts :).

What the map needs imo.

Removal of all armoured vehicles.
Captured K98k and MP40 selectable classes for Brits + 1 or 2 pick-up MG34's.
One or two Typhoons for Brits.
Smoke bombardment for Brit commander.

Actually...

- Almost all armoured vehicles are mentioned in the data used for this map. Not in the way they are used in-game but Imo that’s acceptable.
- The British have a mg42 at one of their bases as a reference to the captured equipment. Maybe some pickup kits could be added.
- This map is too small for planes.
- If I’m not mistaken the British commander has smoke artillery (combined with the regular).

Thanks for the suggestions, even though it's a bit early to start changing the map. It's good to have some ideas ready.

Imo it's not as easy as comparing the number of vehicles. Of all the vehicles the Sherman and PZ3 are the most straightforward. The other vehicles (like the Bren carriers and Marder) require a bit more creativity. I expect that, once the players have adapted, this will help the British. But there is always room for improvement.

My condolences

what happened to Schism's other maps? that North Africa one in particular looked to be fun but as yet it has not seen the light of FH2's day.

I'd like to see the Battle of Keren become part of the mod at some point. But at the moment there are other maps that the mod could use.
