Star Wars: The Old Republic
« on: 16-06-2010, 15:06:06 »
Star Wars franchise getting a bit - - hard to come up with new stuff despite the fact you've err engineered a whole universe, I completley dismissed SW:OR MMPOG because I thought it would be just like WAW..

then I saw this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6E0-hv8EeQ

and I wanted to be part of it.

Quoting myself from other forum regarding the Alderaan cinematic trailer:

Quote
What the hell was I watching? It was like a dirty crossbreed between SW (somehow, I have no slightest idea which bit) and LOTR. I had absolutely no feeling of Star Wars in it, good thing they had blasters, lightsabers and the original music in it to remind me it was actually supposed to be a trailer of a Star Wars game. I know Im the only one on the island of dislike with this but I cant see how this title is any relevant to Star Wars. I never liked KOTOR series either, since I couldnt immerse myself into the universe in which I thought I was going to be in since it had the SW opening sequence, but it wasnt what I got after all.

Seriously, give me old school Galactic Civil War MMO or shooter for once. Where have gone the days of SotE, Jedi Knight and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter...

Then right after I posted about The Force Unleashed 2 which seemingly was slashing stormtroopers to bits and pieces.

I just cant get into this Old Republic nonsense. Why does Star Wars have to be all about the Force and lightsabers? I am more of an old school Han Solo kind of fan who takes the blaster over a saber anytime. I guess Im too old fashioned.

Looks like fun, altough for a moment i thought that i was looking at a dragonball Z game.

I always wanted to be a clone in Starwars, lightsabers are nothing for me.

I never was into MMORPG's, never understood the joy people got when playing them.

Regular RPG's was something diffrent. I only played 2 of them, but i enjoyed them all=Fallout universe and Knights of the old republic

Seeing this trailer, i am sure i am gonna buy this game. And i really hope, that with the filming type this trailer was made, a movie is being brought up with. I would defiantly watch it
-i am fairly sure that if they took porn off the internet, there would only be one website left and it would be called bring back the porn "Perry cox, Scrubs.

That's what I though before I tried The Lord of The Rings Online ;D

But yeah, I absolutely loved KoTOR... and while we are at it, ALL BioWare games I have played. Star Wars + BioWare = <3

*generic jedi format of beard and stuff noted...

I have nothing with MMORPGs but I am a big Star Wars fan and this looks awesome.

But I can't get over the fact that the new (as in: from the recent trilogy) laser sounds are so weak. There's no power in them whatsoever.

Plus, I still have to get used to the whole 3000 year old Old Republic. It simply doesn't feel 3000 years old. I mean, if you compare our world now to the human world 3000 years ago, it looks a hell of a lot different. The old republic doesn't really feel that well thought out, design-wise. It looks like they have been standing still on the technological front, for 3000 years. They basically have the same stuff Luke and his buddies had (lightsabers, lasers, hyperdrive capability, droids, etc.), and it hardly looks older. Okay, I'm basing this on my experiences with Knight Of The Old Republic 1 & 2 (great geames nonetheless!), and maybe this game isn't set exactly around that time, but still...

Sorry, I can get a bit ranty when it comes to my favorite galaxy far far away....  ;-)

Star Wars Galaxies was a nice try, but it ended in endless grinding as somehow all MMORPGs do.

Well, even by the times of the Exar Kun war/Jedi civil war era (before and around KoTOR) the republic was already 20 000 years old. I guess that since then, the technology has not advanced quite so fast as on Earth. Styles and fashion comes and goes but the basic technology advances slowly.

I have also seen some people criticising episodes I - III because of the "fancier looks" of spaceships and computers and so on. But the technology is actually the same. I see The Old Republic somewhat like The Roman Empire. Thousands of years the republic has lived relatively in peace, concentrating on high class lifestyle, fancy designs and overly decorated UI's to mentions some aspects. But then came Palpatine and turned the ancient republic into a cold, ruthless, effective Sith-empire. The glorious republic collapsed and the change is shown in everything, including fashion and design. This is, at least, how I see it. :)

Star Wars Galaxies was a nice try, but it ended in endless grinding as somehow all MMORPGs do.
Not necessarily... Asheron's Call is still going strong after over ten years. I'm not familiar with the facts, but it seems that it was the "New Game Enhancements" that killed Galaxies.

While im a person that feels Star Wars has long since past its prime in the public spotlight, this game is pretty interesting. Regardless of the fact I won't be playing it.

@ Thorondor:
yeah, I agree and like your Roman Empire to Medieval times comparison. That's basically how I like to view it too, but I always have more of a Weimar Republic => Nazi Germany comparison in my head. It makes sense for the old republic to look way shinier than the new Empire but I miss that gritty-ness that made Star Wars, well, so Star Wars. ;)
Plus, in the original trilogy the laserguns were treated more like semi-auto rifles with seperate bolts being fired. All the guns in the recent trilogy seem to be more akin to full auto MGs. You can hardly distinguish cause (a shot fired) and effect (an impact) on screen anymore. Now it's just a blur of special effects. That, plus the weaker sound makes it less convincing/believable I guess.
Also the strategies seem so unlogical/anachronistic in the new movies: basically like (indeed) Roman armies just walking towards eachother while in my opinion it should be more like WWII-or-later style tactics where they actually take the difference between armor and infantry in mind. They don't even seek cover, they just walk around shooting and dying. The end battle on Endor was a great movie battle (apart from the Tarzan aping Chewie and some other overly "funny" scenes) because it was shown on a tactical level instead of wide scale all-out war.

Pff, sorry, I'm getting carried away here. So don't get me wrong, I love all this Star Wars stuff and I can go for hours.  ;)

And yeah, they should remake X Wing Alliance (or better yet Tie Fighter) and I wouldn't mind a sort of Brothers in Arms type Dark Forces/Kyle Katarn singleplayer game, and not necessarily with all the Jedi bits in.
