So I'm just intresed who here is folding, and which team they are folding for (if not for the FH team).

I've been watching the team list and haven't noticed much activity happening, but I hope that my assumtion that I am the only active person is wrong.

Bump ;D

Anyway, I've started again since winters back and I need to heat my room.

Anyone want to join me and the couple of others still chugging away?

Read all about it.

I used to fold, but my siblings kept turning it off and I never got any actual work done.  Plus, my family doesn't like to leave the computer on overnight.  So I don't fold anymore.

Folding@Home is a distributed computing software that uses volunteers CPUs, GPUs and PS3s to simulate structural folding in proteins.  The results from these simulations allow the manufacture of better medicines and better understanding of how the body works.

Basicly, you download the client program and run it.  It then downloads work units, which it works on and then uploads it back to the central server when its finished.  Work is done in the background, with priority for going to other processes (advised to pause it anyway when gaming).  In terms of effectiveness: PS3>GPU>CPU.  For each work unit you complete, you are given some points.  These points can also be added to the score of a chosen team, in this case it would be the team "Forgotten Hope Community" (84762).

Go here to learn more (and download).

Rad set the team up in november 2007, and there is a sub forum for it back at FF.

i shall fold over night to keep me warm :D

How long does a work unit take to complete, and more specifically 1 point of a work unit?

I depends on which work unit, how fast your computer is and few other factors.  If I remember correctly, one took me several hours, but the next one I was given estimated itself at a few days.

Check to make sure you download the right client then.  The are ones for single core CPUs, multicore CPUs, Nvidia GPUs, ATI GPUs, plus a load of beta clients.

My 8800GTX will munch through an average sized work unit in about 2-3 hours.  My single core client running on a quad core CPU will do a smaller work unit in about 5-10 hours.  Most of my points are from the GPU.
