Unexpected update is unexpected^^

Nice looking map, I like the combined urban and forest warfare. Infantry-vehicle-combat!

Is there an overview/map and a short introduction, what the map is about? Whats the vehicle layout? I spotted a Sherman (obiviously) and a pz4 and a panther.

The pics don't even scratch the surface when it comes to gameplay.
Its even more intense than Bastogne. Some serious close quarters combat and cat and mouse tank combat are assured.

That said, a bit of History on the battle would have been nice.

History text added:

Quote
After the initial confusion following the German assault into the Ardennes, allied forces quickly consolidated, setting up strong defensive positions around important crossroads and villages. One of these strongpoints was the Belgian town of St. Vith, where the 7th US Armored and 106th US Infantry divisions hold their ground against the might of the German Panzers. When they were finally forced to give up their positions, they had delayed the Germans for many crucial days and left St. Vith as a pile of rubble.

Another american map in the Ardennes, quite interresting. Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like it will be another map like Meuse and Eppeldorf, wich means tanks dominate the battlefield. All maps on the ardennes front except Hurtgen Forest are tank battles, where infantry doesnt have a great role. IMO, it would have been more interresting to see a more infantry oriented map like Falaise or St-Lo than a fifth armored style map.

Yer, those rubble-strewn narrow streets and the hidden AT guns make it a tank cemetery. Tanks are useful in the open areas though, and there ARE many of those. Just don't drive it into town too often.

Art direction is again top-notch and better than in most commercial releases.

However, minimap (complete with OOB, flags, and push, if any) and vehicle list would tell much more on how it is supposed to play ;)

Minimap is here, and will be added to the map's official section on the website as soon as it's created :)
The game play logic is not detailed here, but the map has an extensive push logic and the only way the germans can win is by securing all the control points, Good luck!

WOW 11 flags to cap(defend) !!! I was not expecting this, very very interresting. With a Push mode, this will be quite interresting, and I imagine the more the german advance, the more americans will get tanks to defend. And I also like the fact that we will be able to fight on all around the map. This map definatly looks more interresting than I tought, thanks devs for your incredible work.

And another question, how big is the map ?

So apparently there are no flag limits in BF2...........or are there?

Is it safe to say this map will have the most flags of any map in FH2?

Will it have 16 & 32 player versions?

Open areas. I wont say what you can't see mate :) Eint my place.
But I can say this though. if you ever saw those History channel 3d Re-enactments of greatest tank battles BoB, this map totally reminds me of them. The way you can suddenly run into a Panther in a narrow rubble-strewn street and try desperately to reverse over tank traps and debris, only to realize the guy hasnt even seen you yet. Or you are forced to bail because you know you are going to get it.

Its epic.

Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: Ts4EVER on 12-03-2012, 12:03:43
I think the Germans get something like 2 PIVs and a Panther from the start, and later another Hetzer and some more tanks at the southern flag. The Americans have about the same amount, perhaps one tank less. I think they get the M36.

Who cares? That looks like THE map to lay yourself into a corner with a MG and defend a flag. :)
Does it have this "Brest feeling" (no pun intended)? With it´s narrow roads and heavy fighting?

Most flags can, and WILL be approached from multiple locations, so lying with a machine gun will get you a knife in the back or an HE blast from a tank or AT gun.. A lot went into the push system in this map. I am yet to find a flag that will fall by a single capper hiding somewhere, without a squad landing right on top of yoyou... or an HE shell.

Silver I got without trying... certainly did not cap as many flags. What counts as a cap for that achievement actually? Capture, neutralize, capture asssist and neutralize assist, amirite? Because otherwise I wouldn't have gotten even the Silver medal.

Post by: Butcher on 12-03-2012, 15:03:19
What´s the difference between a capture and a capture assist? Yeah the amount of points you get but I mean the procedure itself. Does only the first one in the capzone get a full capture because only he capped the whole flag? Or can you still join some secs. later to get a full capture (lets say it just needs to be above 50% captured)?
Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: evhgear on 12-03-2012, 15:03:13
I think the first who enter the flagzone and stay alive until the cap is complete will get the capture point. All other players will get an assist.

Nice looking map. I suspect the mini map will look a lot less intimidating with the push arrows on it.

Are any of the new more mobile anti-tank guns included? I love the idea of pushing an AT gun to a sweet spot in the city and waiting for a foolish panzer to roll into my sights!

I think the first who enter the flagzone and stay alive until the cap is complete will get the capture point. All other players will get an assist.

Basically yes. If you are the first at a flag, you can even leave the flag area and you will still be first once you re-enter the flag area. Even though there were others capping while you were not. Just because you were the first who started capping.

For example, for once I started capping a flag, but died quickly. I spawned on my squadleader nearby and returned to the flag before if was completely capped by some of my teammates. In the end I got the capture points while others received the assist points.

Logically this was considered a single encounter. The encounter ends only, when there is no enemy left at flag. No matter who and how many people die in between.

Overall the game rewards you for being steady and staying in the same area. You'll also have an advantage when you defend a position for a while: When a map starts, just pick one or two vital flags and focus on them. Don't run from flag to flag without defending your achievements. That will give you a better score.
Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: ajappat on 13-03-2012, 01:03:18
I could swear you won't get capture point if you leave capture zone and re-enter. It has happened so damn many times that I'm first in capzone, trying to find better cover, slip out from capzone, re-enter and only get assist.
Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: Natty on 13-03-2012, 08:03:45
But how many tickets for each team?
And ticket bleed?

Push maps have all been standardized to 1000 tickets each in FH2. This is because we have added a function that allows us to set whatever ticketbleed per team we want. (this was broken in BF2).
many maps (incl. St Vith) have the attackers bleed all the way until the last flag is captured, then they win. (Bleed speed is calculated with a formula based on desired round-time length and average deaths per minute)

This is part of quite an extensive redesign which you'll notice in the patch. Part of the reason for this is to minimize the risk of attackers being able to "out kill" the defenders by simply staying back and camp them. It also gives more clear strategical goals, as well as giving a more direct incentive to attack. To add, it shifts the focus from a game about killing to a game about area control.
In 2.4 only Ramelle and Hurtgen forest used this system, and now we have let pretty much all push maps follow this direction.
There's a lot more to this than what I just wrote, which will be presented later on.

I have done very well MG gunning, but one simply cannot just sit in one location for very long.  The map is SO wide and filled with pathways, alleys, and awesome locations that you have to keep changing position or die rather fast.  I think only one time have I been able to spend more than 2 minutes in any one location.

So after this patch the next one is going to be start of east front or do we get smaller ones like after 2.2?

Don't forget, patches are not just about maps, also bugfixes, balance fixes and new weapons, tanks, planes, and much more.

Indeed, more maps are always welcome, but reality is, that we already have more content than any commercial fps game could ever deliver. That said, I'm still happy with old maps and I'm always looking forward to new features, like new hit angle system in last patch and upcoming ticket bleed, new AT gun behaviour and so on...

Don't forget that many old maps have been revisited and the one or the other surprise will most likely pop up. Can't wait to see the faces of many guys here when they play the 'old' maps. ^^
Truth be told, there are way more than 2 new maps in this release.

I'm sorry if my post came out as being ungrateful or something, I truly respect devs for what they've done and have delivered so far, really. I'm just being naturally insatiable is all. I realize there is a lot more to the patch than just new maps, and cannot wait any longer to play the new Cobra 8)

Moar maps than Keren and St Vith you say? I'd expect at least two, possibly three "Amis in Tunis" maps, and as for others, well, Foy was spotted on the test server way back when, as was Ste. Mere Eglise. EDIT: Puffendorf and Gold Beach as well. And I'd expect some completely unexpected, as of yet unannounced map as well, such as the "Test Map A" ;)

Time to go back to the Conspiracies Mk 2 thread and recheck what was seen in the days of yore...

Were the last X news releases crushed into dust ? The patch will be a couple of old scratchy WW2 music recordings and a new skin for one tank (actually just with yellow stripes on it).

If anything you should have had more flags because your maps were twice the size than this.

Inactive? The Feared and Cruel Lord Lightning is never inactive, he only dwells in the shadows to strike without mercy when no one expects Him!

I have a questions concerning the layout of sniper rifles for the Germans on this map.

In generel will there by K98 ZF or G43 ZF?

In my opinion a mixture would be the best solution. The map looks like it has lot of wide fields and spaces, such terain is certainly not suited for the G43 ZF since you are shooting on bigger ranges and the G43 lacks the higher zoom of the K98 ZF.
So the basic sniper for the Germans on this map should be the K98 ZF. In the central part of the map in the destroyed city a G43 ZF would probably be usefull, but no where else.
I suppose there will be at least 3 sniper kits so I d say an arrangement of 2 K98 ZF to 1 G43 ZF would be appropriate for this map.

Of course I might be wrong on my assumptions, but maybe you devs think about the sniper layout, I guess (not know) it wouldnt be to much work to still change one or two sniper pickup kits.

Don't take my word for it, but I'm pretty sure they got G43 zfs. They also have G43s for the scouts and ncos.

Ohhhh that would mean no serious sniper battles on Vith and somewhat unfair for the Germans snipers.

Devs shoud really think about it again or did German snipers mostly use G43 in the Ardennes? I as far as Iknow this is not the case.

Pfft the map has like what, 400m view distance? at that range the magnification of sniper scopes makes absolutely no difference. In fact that is the case on pretty much every FH2 map.
Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: hyperanthropos on 02-04-2012, 19:04:37
400m is similar to what map?

G43 is only really good on Brest. The zoom makes a huge difference as I said the G43 with its low zoom and the bad German crosshair make it useless an even medium ranges.

Please give the Germans K98 ZF atleast to stand a chance against Allied snipers. Not everybody thinks snipers are useless...

As far as i know, the best sniper rifles are...regular rifles. Thats because you don't have to compensate so much for the bullet drop. So less zoom = better.Besides, not everything has to be mirror balanced.
Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: Ts4EVER on 02-04-2012, 19:04:12
Also, I don't think more than 5% of all kills oyu get with your sniper rifle are enemy snipers. It's not like you are directly pitted against the enemy sniper. And even if that is the case, the zoom level means jack shit, at that point it's all about who sees the other guy first.
Title: Re: St. Vith: Forgotten Hope 2 Update
Post by: hyperanthropos on 02-04-2012, 19:04:58
Yeah Musti of course why not completly drop sniper rifles you can do everything with a regular rifle, since its much better to shot on big ranges with less zoom. Why didnt I come up with this.

ALso its not about mirror balancing its about having the right gear for teh right situation. And German sniper almostalways choose the K98 over the G43, so yet again G43 where its usefull (city terrain) otherwise K98. Also makes for historical corectness.

@ TS4ever: True the sniper duel is a weak argument. And as someone who plays as a sniper a lot I can tell that zoom makes a big difference, its a lot harder to even find the guy with a G43.
