Now that Soviets are added, it's solidly in the realm of an alternate history game.  Soviets are a 3rd faction that can fight against both Germany and USA.

The only thing I'm missing is a fully-populated 100 player server in the USA.

General Discussion / Gamespy shutdown May 31, 2014

Gamespy is shutting down everything on May 31.  This is going to effect every Battlefield game except BF3 and later.  This includes the master server browser and online login services for BF2.

General Discussion / Re: FH2 Thursday Reloaded!

I was stalking your Sherman in my Panther on Bastogne.  Storm rolled through and I lost power for the rest of the night.  So I went to bed early with FH2 blueballs.

Regarding the new Thompson sound, at first I was 'meh' but it's growing on me.  As was mentioned, it is more mechanical-sounding,  which is a nice idea.

Generally everything about the new version is great.  I really enjoy seeing the new 101st Airborne and the M15 hats.  It makes a map like Purple Heart Lane feel more epic with the two elite forces head-to-head.

I also was a part of Gen. Henry's squad defending Luttich and Bastogne.  Twas a great time.

On such a large player population server, spawning on squad leaders shows to be very powerful if not overly so.   The enemy simply could not flush us out completely, due to our squad leader's skill at hiding and directing his large 14 player squad.  Despite never losing ground, we still lost the battle for Luttich, while having a sound victory in Bastogne.  Both maps were intense despite never moving off one flag the entire round.

Suggestions / Re: Tank Free Look
« on: 17-10-2011, 03:10:44 »
You can spot from inside any vehicle with free look.  Just center the screen on the target, hold Q, and at that point, you will have that particular target acquired.  So from there, you can leisurely select auto spot, or even scroll around the comm rose, as your target is locked on, so to speak.   It won't matter where your camera reset to as you already locked your spot in.

Meh.
I dont think ill playing it until the mods come out. Counter to what the ranking system is meant to do, its has very much put me off playing the game.

Also waiting for mods.  The killer for me is the fact that everyone has cybernetic ultrazoom.  I can't believe they would do this to an RO sequel.  I hope mods fix this.

The beta is a blast despite only playing one map.  The suppression system is great.  Bipods are a nice addition.  The gunplay in general feels great.  You don't have to unload an entire assault rifle clip to kill someone.  I am quite pleasantly surprised the weapons aren't weak, nerfy toys!  Plenty of gadgets to add to your weapons.  Great stuff imo.

I just wish I was able to play more than a half hour on Caspian Border, aka the real Battlefield map.

Downsides so far are:  dorritos all around,  tanks don't come with a coax MG as in BC2.

General / Re: Tank turrets

1.  Great idea and was much needed.  Super agile laser turrets needed to be brought down.
2.  Still great.
3.  Pros:  One of the best new features.  Cons:  M8 Greyhound is not very agile/now more clumsy compared to everything else.
4.  Pings don't seem to negatively effect my tanking experience.

Also, regarding the panther does  that frontal track shot actually work for a one hit kill from a 76mm?
No.

Tips: hit them in the rearwheels in a straight angle (90 degrees - or zero degrees, depending how you count), always a nice amount of damage dealt that way. Panther dies in 1 shot from a short distance that way, KT survives first shot, but won't do that a second time.

My screenshots above show 76mm one-shotting a Panther from the front.

The current state of RO2 makes me play and appreciate RO1/DH all the more.  It's terrible and a big step backwards toward Call of Duty.  The only nice new thing is first person cover system.

RO1 became much better over time, following new maps and mods.  RO2 also will get better in the same regard.  Tripwire says that they will be adding a ton of stuff that didn't make it into the release.  RO2 has only a fraction of guns and vehicles that RO1 has.

Most of the maps are small, close quarters.  When you aim down the sights, you get a very large zoom.  Combine this with a rifle in tight quarters and you get punishing tunnel vision.   Did I mention you get an extra zoom by pressing Shift anytime?  Haha!  Your MP40 can snap off headshots all day.

You cannot enter/exit tanks, but only respawn inside one.  Pretty huge ramifications.

MGs are straight out of vanilla BF2 with all the deviation and recoil.  To actually hit anything, you can single fire the MG34.  So you aren't firing an MG so much as a large capacity rifle.  If you enjoyed using MGs in RO1, your dreams are crushed!  It seems the only way I score kills with MGs in RO2 is by using its penetration to blindfire through obstacles.  Since most guns have 8X ACOG, you will get sniped if you try to use a MG like a MG.  You know, area denial, suppression, if not raw killing power.   The kill cam will guarantee if you setup somewhere and actually kill someone, they will just come back and snipe you.

Operation Cobra / Re: Operation Cobra 64

Can we slightly lower the stone walls in the American northeast main base?  They are a half inch too high to jump over.  It's annoying to get stuck in a needless knee-high maze in a main base.  (trying to get between the airfield and the tanks)
