Classic Omaha Beach Charlie Sector [FH1 Port]
« on: 13-09-2012, 03:09:51 »
So, as the topic says, the most ever beloved map for FH by many (including me) =)

The aim is simple, make it play as close to the original as possible, which includes:

Feeling the bullets fly by your ears while you look for cover
Making players feel like if they were there (as much as possible)
Intensive combat
Uneven (Yet even by victory points)

Some personal adjustments in comparence to original:
More Blooody
Less vechicles
Last German flag rework (Gonna make it a small town instead, or maybe a bunker complex ala gold-beach, feel free to help me with a proposition or/and layout, i dont seem good at that)

I am open for suggestions =)

Planned to post some screenshots straight away but.. Failed with lightmapping, so tomorrow ;P

Feeling the bullets fly by your ears while you look for cover
How will you do this map-side?
Making players feel like if they were there (as much as possible)
What components do you have to make them feel this?
Intensive combat
Where is your benchmark for player acceptance?
Uneven (Yet even by victory points)
What do you mean by "uneven"?

More Blooody
Pained fake blood on the beaches?
I am open for suggestions =)

Release a test map to the public with distances and covers, see if it works... if you start building a map without knowing if your scale is OK, you risk having to rebuild the entire map later....

good luck!

Theres tons of wonderful maps of the fortifications at this sector of the beach. Try to find some and incorporate them into this age old stereotypical Omaha style map that I certainly love.

Look forward to seeing it.

The best would be by making cover on the beach exacly so it gives complete cover yet is very precise, so feeling "safe" yet with tension =) Maybe something good to do would be also reduce accuracy a little for the German MGs, they might be too effective and end up in Germans shooting very short salvas (which would mean no bullets flying by ears) =)
Making players feel like if they were there (as much as possible)
What components do you have to make them feel this?
This would be graphics and statics, overall look. It might be the hardest part to achive... But since the original map did that, its not impossible! =)
Intensive combat
Where is your benchmark for player acceptance?
What you mean? I didint understand this one sorry =)
Uneven (Yet even by victory points)
What do you mean by "uneven"?
Well, if i remember correctly (checked also some old screens), most of the times Axis get more kills, however that doesint mean they win the map, which is balanced by victory points =) And if Axis play really good, it was veeery hard to win. I mean, if Allies play very good and Axis play very good, then Axis got advantage =)
More Blooody
Pained fake blood on the beaches?
Yes, together with some dead models =) Maybe even animated, screaming for help or just pain in one of craters without a leg (Like in that movie Saving Ryan no?) =) Depends on how it will look in the end i guess, goals are not allways achived!

I am open for suggestions =)

Yes, thats exacly my plan and also my worry. The map in current stage is very simple, last flag is not done at all aswell terrain beyond the bunker flags is not completed. All in all, every element is to be looked on for now, version 0.1 will be avalible for download today i think, together with small server if i manage :) Then i will know where to go next.

Ah, and Natty, who made the original map? ;) Just curious who to thank for that great map :)

I got some problems that someone here might know how to solve, i tried to reduce accuracy on the MGs, but after i tested it i believe it might end up in beign even more effective then with good accuracy ;P Therefore i instead attempt to give it recoil:

ObjectTemplate.createComponent WeaponBasedRecoilComp
ObjectTemplate.recoil.recoilSize 5
ObjectTemplate.recoil.recoilSpeed 200
ObjectTemplate.recoil.recoilSpeedGB 200
ObjectTemplate.recoil.cameraRecoilSpeed 10
ObjectTemplate.recoil.cameraRecoilSize 1.5
ObjectTemplate.recoil.hasRecoilForce 1
ObjectTemplate.recoil.goBackOnRecoil 0
ObjectTemplate.recoil.recoilForceUp CRD_NONE/2.45/0/0
ObjectTemplate.recoil.recoilForceLeftRight CRD_NONE/-0.1/0/0

No recoil up is noticed :S What am i doing wrong?

Some screens! =)

Cover on the beach made out of waves, or at least thats the idea ;P

Mortal fire

Bangalores are required to breakthrough the barbewires, bangalore kits are placed on the beach. I manipulated their colision so they nicely go "inside" the barbewire. "FIRE IN THE HOLE!"

Clear water, makes me want to take a swim  :o

Well, about the size of the beach, it is something i have in mind, but not sure... Its very sensitive issue, too big beach = too little intensivity, too small beach = big mess. I guess the goal is, to polish the size so its intensive combat at the same time not too messy =)

I will put together a little map pack for try out and try to get some more people then few days ago, and yes, i will be definetly looking for suggestions about the size =)

I still havint figured out how to add proper recoil to mgs ;P in worst case i will just reduce damage inflicted :S

Why you want to change recoil/deviation/accuracy of MGs? That totally sucks and that's not mapping anymore. Make your own minimod or something.

Also: why you changed the original terrain so much? I know that this is a FICTIONAL map but those high hills looks ugly.

All screenshots look like it is bleached out too much. It doesn't look natural to me, so maybe add a bit of warmth (brownish/red colours) to the beach.

If you don't like his effords just leave this thread alone. He makes an effort and invests time. If you only came here to slate his work without leaving just one positive comment, I don't understand your motivation.

Eeehm, I do like it, but I'm trying to give feedback here. Relax, man.
