Will we get an Arnhem map in 2.4?
« on: 09-09-2010, 13:09:30 »
Hi lads,

recently I saw A Bridge Too Far and I can remember so much hours of playing the bf42 market garden map and - of course - the fantastic fh1 arnhem map.

Well, I am happy with the 3 new maps in 2.3, but can a normandy theme have no market garden map? I dont think so. may be this operation is generally overrated in the flow of the allied war machine, but I was one of the greatest known operation in WW II.

Therefore my question and ask for the FH II Dev Team: Are you (still?) working for an Arnhem map?

(I know that this question was asked many times before, but I feel that the Normandy theme is slowly "covered" by two major updates and I think the next great update will focus some other theaters like eastfront or pacific, so it would be nice to have an actual feedback ;) )

If I'd be straightforward, I'd say nope.

But Im gonna be puzzling this time and say who knows, maybe, maybe not.

Speaking about Arnhem, what happened to donutz his project?

I for one liked the map in FH1, and would not mind seeing a similar map soon again.

You are right, but market garden was the aftermath of the Normandy invasion and I dont think that the FH Team will give us an extra patch just for 3 bridges ;) So I think it would be topically best fit in addition to the Normandy theme due the great connection.

Battle of Brest was already pulling the limit since Brest is located in Brittany, not in Normandy. But it was excused due to reason that the battle was part of an operation that was initiated in Normandy. Operation Market Garden however was nothing about normandy or france entire.

But I agree that Arnhem from 0.7 was a fun map and I'd love to see it again in FH2, but only historically accurate like Donutz originally dreamed about. Seriously tho, I doubt OMG will get a dedicated version for it like Africa and Normandy did. If anything, it'll be like Olympus, Crete and Sfakia, they are fillers that are included just because someone wanted to make one and was capable with the tools and materials that are currently present.

Who knows.

Si senors gracias

I do wonder how it will playout. I mean, how are a bunch of PIAT equipped force with maybe one or 2 6PDR's defend against such an armoured force.

In FH1 it was still somewhat possible because HE firepower wassent very big

But in FH2 this is way diffrent

Personaly, this is how I would go about it: Mae it ahuge project, like fall of Tobruk back in the day. However, instead of using the map for one scenario, make different scenarios (like the "day 1 day2" maps of old). Every version would have different lighting and would be based on a different stage of battle (like Gräbners Charge, Kampfgruppe Tessau, the final mop up etc)

Hm yes that would work. IIRC the first day the germans tried to cross the bridge with only APCS and light vehicles

Dint the panzers arrived the second day?

I just have been searching around, and i found that the germans need 2 vehicle's=Mobelwagen and StuH42. But then again, i can imagine the rapefest that will follow with it

Arnhem seems to be a challenge, but i would love to see the result ONE day.

Clever placements of statics, such as wrecks which tunnel approaches, creates cover for infantry and makes every wreck a potential trap. But of course by using artistic liberties that allows you to maneuver more in cover, have places to shoot from and so on. And naturally, bleed is one of the main effects that will get people moving instead of sitting about. So if there is a tank sitting on the bridge, lopping HE at your teammates, all you have to do is sit and wait for the rat bastard to start moving in order to achieve even slight victory.

And naturally, one cant go overboard with vehicles. Need to loosen up a bit and only add necessary vehicles, or vehicles that spawn only under certain conditions. There are many ways to make it work. One is to give brits more PIATs. :P

Maybe the map could play out as sidi rezegh of holland?

Brit inf vs Ger inf, when brits reach the bridge german armored reinforcements spawn in, and they counterattack.

Pickupkits around flags or other areas with engineer-mines equipment will also work.

Mines do not 1s1k german tanks IIRC, so when they hit one mine, they have to send out men or get out themself to get the road cleared.

In this progress making them huge lovely targets for PIATs ;)

AND i just now remebered THESE 2 babies!
The airborne used both the hawkins mine AS the gammon bomb!
Especialy the gammon bomb will be a MUST for the british airborne. Both wont be SUPER effective VS tanks though. But still a great addition to the rather small arsenal of weapons
