Title: What 24" Monitor to go for?
Post by: Capten_C on 05-01-2010, 14:01:13
Greetings and New Year tidings folks!  :)

My Acer 22” monitor packed in on Sunday night. Won't switch on and won't take any power according to the dead Led.Only had it around 3-4 yrs too. :(
It’s either a "backlight failure or blown capacitor or refractor failure"* (common failure issues I found whilst doing some searching, and that I know nothing about!) one of those reasons I’d guess.
I have a mate opening it's innards today to see ifit's rescuable, but probably not.

So, now that 24” monitors are now around the same prices as my 22” was a few years ago, can anyone recommend a good buy? I don’t need one with in-built speakers, just something reliable. Not looking at Acer again, looks like they only last 3-4 yrs! ::)

I just use a monitor for day to day pc browsing and of course FH2!

I’ve been looking at the Samsungs and an Asus, any other make I should be looking at? And, will FH2 be able to max out to the full 24" screen size?

Cheers!  ;D

Happy new Year :P

I don't know about the 24" Samsung Monitors but my 22" won't make it longer then 3-4 years, too.
Since 2 Month i have some problems with the background light...it's blinking 5-10min when i start the PC like a stroposcope, really annoying and a buddy from me has the same prob with the same moni so no Samsung anymore for me.

You could look at some of HP's monitors, I've had a 22" from them that has held up well. Like most HP products the software packaged with it is awful but I like the monitor itself.

Does anyone here game with a 24" monitor or larger?
Reading up looks like the bigger the screen the more the "input lag". How much would that effect online gaming I don't know?
My pings around 50 on european servers, whether or not a 24" would make it worse I don't know. Would it?
Some of these 24" have 5ms response times, I guess that would even things out? Looking at the Asus 24" VH242H at the moment.

Seems like a lot of the new monitors are being made in 16:9.

What happend with the 1.5 bf2 patch regarding widescreen?

Is it correct that bf2 plays best in 16:10 and therefore there would be a border top & bottom screen with a 16:9 monitor?  :-\
Or can the screen size be adapted? Would I be better off trying to get a 16:10 24"?  ???

Can help much, but I'm running a Samsung SyncMaster 700p plus 17" since 1999 at 75Hz. I'd always go for a Samsung again. But well, that was 11 years ago.

Thanks for replies! :)

Basically I'm down to this decsision. (24")

A 1920x1200 resoloution monitor :- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-099-SA&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=

Or the newer 1920x1080 :- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-106-SA&tool=3
(which is a tad more expensive, but you get that tilt screen/portrait option and your more into 2010 with it that back in good ol' 2009. Future games etc)

Now if BF2/FH2 playes fine on both without screen stretching or black borders well I may as well go for the dearer one for the long term.
However I don't want me fecking up my FH2 experiance just for the sake of a snazzy new fangled monitor.

How would I find out that FH2 will play ok on the 1920x1080?  ???

Aha! FH2 will work on a 1920 x 1080 ?! Danke Amigo! ;D

I've looked at the BenQ's too, I like, seems to be a waiting list at a lot of suppliers though!

Well, seems I will have to wait for all this bah humbug snow to shift before doing anything mad like ordering a new screen!  :)

I can also recommend BenQ monitors.

With these 1920x1080's do you have to rename the FH2 shortcut to "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +widescreen 1" to enable widescreen or do they play the game fine without doing that post patch 1.5?  ???

I never had to do this on my recently deceased 22"

with 1.5 1920x1080 is option in settings as 1024x768 is, just pick it from there so you don't need to fuck yourself with those  ;)

BF2 has an even wider field of view with 16:9 resolutions, however the HUD is slightly more stretched. A 24" 16:10 still has slightly more surface area then a 24" 16:9 though. And a lower field of view will be better at long range, though the differences with 16:9 and 16:10 are not really noticeable.

Thanks for all your advice folks!  8)

I went for a Samsung SM2494HM which arrived today!
Just had a few rounds of FH2 in 24" and it works well! (amazing in fact!) :D
And being able to view this and other forums in portrait view on a 24" ain't bad either!  ;D
