Mumble
« on: 23-04-2012, 22:04:40 »
I've started playing PR recently and maybe I don't like the gamestyle so much as FH2, but what I found great is this program which allows you to communicate with other players who are near you on the server and they aren't in you're squad! I always dream to warn our tanker that hostile tank is behind him. Is it possible to make it or is it restricted by PR devs?

It's probably possible but since FH 2 isn't known as being a very talkative community (and some people's attitude that "hearing kids talk about random stuff" ruins their immersion  ::)) it isn't likely to be worked on...
This sentence is intentionally left unfinished...

Sure is possible. Mumble itself is not made by PR, though I don't know who's behind the PR version of it.

However, I highly doubt this would get so big role in FH2.

1. Only few people would use it if people are not forced to use it. This was so in PR before servers started to enforce it. And yep, I don't like to force people for it.

2. FH2 is simply so much different with it's gameplay. In PR you might have 10 minutes of same firefight with some random guys, so communicating with them is vital. In FH2 on the other hand, you might stay with random people for 40 seconds to cap flag and then you are off again, likely without the random guys. (random as in people not in your squad)

So yes, it would be cool, but on the other hand I just can't see it ever happening. Tournaments could have great use for mumble, unless they already use it?

before we need that, we need to get people join up squads.
There they could talk if they would want- but too often I see 50 or even more % not in squads.

I don't understand why some people hate it when i talk about random stuff, when the situation allows it ofcourse.

So if it's possible to introduce in FH2 without problems, I hope I'll be able to use it on the tournaments soon, cause I don't care about public playing at this moment...

oooh i remeber the solid golden times people said across the server=OOOH SHUT UP THETA AND ANGRYBEAVER

In wich beaver simple said=Get fokked!

as for mumble, it has potential, but i hate it how they FORCE you to use it on PR.
-i am fairly sure that if they took porn off the internet, there would only be one website left and it would be called bring back the porn "Perry cox, Scrubs.

Tbh i use my headset only if i can talk to someone.
I hate talking to a totally quiet squad. When others are active in voice chat i sometimes use it as well though.

Playing with a squad that uses voip is always more fun and makes it, especially as SL, easier to keep your squadmates together, because they know: oh he's not just a running spawnpoint, he even organizes things.

The more people using it, the more will think about using it as well. The consequence is better teamplay which is one of the greatest gameplay improvements.

I will definately use voip a lot more often in the future !

btw @hslan admins: On hslan the Ts3 ip gets displayed, i never used it but my feeling tells me, that nobody uses it. Am i right with that or are there people actually using it ?

Yep, pretty sure no one uses it. I sometimes see some random people there but not on FH2 channels.

We actually gang up on TS most of the time. (using Warumdarum's or another community's TS3).
For me Mumble is just like TS, sure it has this nice feature of recognising people who are close to you, but imho most of the time I want to talk to people no matter where they are at the moment on the map. :)

My personal experience also tells me that if I open up a squad and use voip to actively lead it, then people usually tend to respond. If no one takes the initiative then no one will use VoIP, that's just the nature of online gaming.

Well Mumble gives to the opportunity to talk to the guy near you who is not in your squad and on TS... But yeah, if it isn't forced to use, nobody will use it...

If we get a great coder, it may be possible to start it up, have a FH2 tutorial to help set it up, and ofcourse code it to work - then yes, it would be awesome and totally transport gameplay.

But you can't do anything with the fact that, generally, only 2 or 3 people in any squad use VOIP at all, although more may have mics on.

And only like 2 squads in a faction of 5 - 7 squads will use VOIP at all.

So y'know - we need to look at the culture. If it is setup to start up and ppl have it active, even not speaking, you will still hear ppl around you.

Alternatively, beef up the commo-rose + optional VOIP, and you're good to go - And its more truer to FH2 philosophy.

So Mumble support in "TO DO" list?

You using external mode launching tool "FH2.exe" so you can modify the source or use plugin.
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Games

Many Battlefield 2 mods already have mumble support, some even have special build of mumble (like Project Reality). Some servers require mumble to play :)
People often change squad or make new if they are in same area and want to cooperate. But its time waste.

About philosophy.
in mumble you can talk to 30-50m around you - its more realistic than talk to all squad no matter where they are :)
