Phosphor grenades & mortar shells
« on: 29-04-2011, 08:04:28 »
I think that there shouldn't be any problems with developing it for the devs. It would look simply awesome when battlefield simply changes into hell.  :)

I'm sorry but I don't even know what you're suggesting. Please be more specific. What about mortar shells? What about Phosphorous grenades? We already have the No. 77 smoke grenade, which is a WP grenade.

Sorry, I dont know whats the appropriate name in English for such grenades. I mean fire grenades and mortar shells. They would make lots of flames. Do you understand me now?

There were no "napalm" or "incendiary" shells like you're talking about.  There were as bombs (mostly used in strategic bombing, and by the US in the pacific), but not artillery shells that I know of, at least, not ones that make copious flame.

So these type of shells which are in CoH never existed in WWII? If yes, sb had nice imagination with creating this game...

However, there were such  grenades - yesterday I heard sth like that on History Channel.

Well, they take war veterans to this programme or maybe typical grandpas and tell them what they must say??  ::)

And I thought that weapons in CoH based on WWII, or maybe on Star Wars movie? Because maybe theres sth about I don't know...  ::)

Edit:
Quick searching through the net and found this:

No. 76 Special Incendiary Grenade

Brandwurfgranate S-843A - look at the shells. I found on Polish site that there were also grenades with the same name. I can give link if you want.

Those are not giant flame weapons though.  He's looking for a shell that causes massive amounts of flames.  Those shells are designed to create fires, not to be a fire in their own right.  They generally act like a giant sparkler, shooting out lots of sparks and such meant to catch light to dry brush, wooden structures, etc.  All things that can't really be done ingame.

Now smoke shells for mortars, those have been suggested numerous times, and the devs have shown interest, but never given a really clear answer on if they'll put them in or not.

If I were to guess, he is talking about something like white phosphorus mortar rounds.

Quote
At the start of the Normandy campaign, 20% of American 81 mm mortar rounds were white phosphorus. At least five American Medal of Honor citations mention their recipients using white phosphorus grenades to clear enemy positions, and in the 1944 liberation of Cherbourg alone, a single U.S. mortar battalion, the 87th, fired 11,899 white phosphorus rounds into the city. The U.S. Army and Marines used white phosphorus shells in 107-mm (4.2 inch) mortars. White phosphorus was widely credited by Allied soldiers for breaking up German infantry attacks and creating havoc among enemy troop concentrations during the latter part of the war.

Mind you, I am not saying this make sense or would be actually feasible to implement in game.

32_cm_Nebelwerfer_41

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/28/32_cm_Nebelwerfer_41

The 28/32 cm NbW 41 was a six-barreled rocket launcher mounted on a two-wheeled carriage. Two stabilizer arms and a spade under the towing ring served to steady the carriage while firing. It used used two different rockets. The open metal frames of the launcher were sized to fit the 32 centimetres (13 in) rocket, but adapter rails were provided to allow the 28 centimetres (11 in) rockets to fit. The 28 cm Wurfkörper Spreng (Explosive missile) rocket weighed 82 kilograms (180 lb) and had a 50 kilograms (110 lb) high-explosive warhead. The 32 cm Wurfkörper Flamm (Incendiary missile) was normally filled with 50 litres (13 US gal) (45 kilograms (99 lb)) of incendiary oil (Flammöl), but could carry poison gases or decontamination fluids. The oil could cover 200 square metres (2,200 sq ft)

A bit overkill for FH2 map sizes.
