StuG 3 40 "Nahverteidigungswaffe "
« on: 20-10-2009, 23:10:34 »
AFAIK, the Nahverteidigungswaffe  was an expensive weapon. And by far, not applied to All Stug 3's. Yet all stugs have them in Normandy.

Yet why in FH2, do all StuG's have this weapon?

You mean the remote MG or the non-boxy mantlet?  Becuase I too want to see 'proper' StuGs without them.

Because the dev's had to decide whether to have this or the AVRE. And since FH2 is so German biassed the answer was clear.

Or could you provide some sources? I have always had difficulties finding info about the nahverteidigungswaffe.

Oh, after googling the word, I now find that its some smoke launcher.  That you can't even use in the mod, so I think that your argument is invalid really.

"Nahverteidigungswaffe" or "Nahverteidigungsgerät" was, at its simplest, a rotating firing port mounted on the commander's hatch, through which the crew could fire a frag grenade with a flare pistol. Unfortunately, holes in armour work both ways, so the port was often welded shut, and the effectiveness of firing a single very small grenade essentially blind was questionable anyway, especially if the enemy had 'zooks or PIATs. Equally random was the habit of mounting remotely detonated S-Mines on the outside of the tank - to know when to detonate them would have required the crew to see the attacking infantry, and if you can see them, you should either shoot at them or drive away...

tl;dr: practically useless IRL and not worth the effort to implement in-game.

Its the remote MG. I thought the Nahverteidigungswaffe ment this weapon.

Yet this weapon was not common, yet all stug's in FH2 have them

I like the remote MG, imo the stug is not alive long enough on the BF to get too picky about this gun-mount... now the spotter side, i.e. the other turret in the stug, I'm not sure everyone gets it - it's for spotting.  Hundreds of times I've had players get into the support turret...

then they get out and run off

Interesting, since all the 1944 batch StuG's sent in Finland had the base for the remote controlled MG34 and holes for the nahverteidigungswaffe. This equipment was manufactured in a different factory and due some delay the StuG's were sent to Finland without them. When the StuG's arrived the holes were plugged and, like in earlier StuG's, Russian DT LMG's were installed.

Edit: Interesting fact; Since these StuG's did not have the loader's shield, it was made from, among other things, the lower hull armour of captured or destroyed BT-7 tanks.

Actually there's something a bit wrong with that spotting turret: its default state is stationnary. I only discovered by chance a few days ago that right clicking allowed this position to rotate.
If you haven't discovered this yet, the spotting turret is ... useless.  ;D

Am I the only one who thinks it is odd that the MG on the Stug is aimed using the zoomed in binocular sights but the commander/spotter position spots (calls for arty?) with a simple crosshair and no zoom?  I do like the zoom from aiming the MG with the binoculars but it just seems kind of backwards to me.

Yeh, I on occasion get confused due to the sights. I mean you'd think crosshair = MG and Bincos = spotter, but there ya go.

id rather have a stug G, the kind without the boar's head mantlet and with the open top gunner, they just look better in my opinion.
