Trailer http://www.fz.se/filmer/20100302/civilization-5-announcement-trailer/
Pictures http://www.fz.se/spel/sid-meiers-civilization-5
So, another Civilization game once again. Same story for me, I keep telling myself I don't want it. Saying I've played the previous games and I know what it's about.
Still, halfway through the this teaser I'm sold. I'm a whore for Civilization.
Just started up Civilization IV: Beyond the sword...
For I am thy whore, sweet Civilization.
-
looks better than 4, but i hope the combat system has improved a lot more than that
-
@Rawhide
Same! I fucking love Civ4, I loved Civ3, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna love Civ5.
-
Ive played civilization since civ1 on amiga 500, 20 years ago. That and FH is the only games i need. Totally gonna try Civ5 , no need to even see the trailer :)
-
I never got into 3. We played 4 with my friend but it was too boring. I'm not going to even download this game ::).
-
*orgasm*

Yeah, Civilization was to boring for me. Could never finish a game, except in Civilization Revolution :-\

I held out for the AGA version. ;D
But yeah I love Civ games. When I am not dicking about with something FH related on here I am usually playing Civ4 with friends over LAN. Hell even my wife likes the game. Though I spend most of my game bailing her out of some messy war she got herself into.
Some little news tidbits.

I like Civ4's menu song... "Baba yetu, yetu uliey" Or something like that. Christian songs sung in swahili FTW
-

Its a great song. I have it in my media player.
BTW if anyone ever wants to play some multi-player some night I am down with that!
-
I think it'll be awesome, not just because it's the newest episode in the series but mainly because I really thought Civilization 4: Beyond the sword was a good long step in the right direction with more espionage and events
Hope these parts will develop more and more and take a even bigger part in Civilization V

Amen brother. ^^ I'm a fool for Civ.
Love the games.

Dont need trailers to know that i will buy it. ;D
Though the game i would really really like to be remade is...

Goodbye normal sleep pattern (again).
Played 1 on PC well into late 90's. Got sidetracked and got hooked onto Master of Orion 1 & 2, and then came Steel Panthers 2 and its freeware mods/remakes (Win)SPWW2, (Win)SPMBT and SPWAW. Got a new PC in 2005, walked past a bargain bin and picked up 2. Didn't impress me much. Skipped 3 altogether, until one fateful day a friend of mine started talking how cool it would be to play 4 online. Bought it, along with the add-ons (though Beyond the Sword would have been enough as it contains all the gameplay changes from Warlords). The online play never came to pass except for one match, but the offline part... if possible, I was hooked even worse than on 1. Fortunately I had the sense not to install the Fall from Heaven mod, remembering my Age of Wonders binge from the turn of the millennium. But anyway, still going through the withdrawal symptoms which only FH2 can keep at bay, and now they are pushing part 5? The horror, the horror.
I wonder if they have finally fixed the bug in the Spy mission "Spread culture", namely that it never worked the way it was supposed to (even though it was supposedly fixed in the last update)?
-
When I was 5 I met civ2 I never builded more than 2 cities because going trough all the technology was fun enough for me. With civ 3 I already had more brains to see that I had to build more than 2 cities but with civ4 I finnally got the hang of it hopefully civ 5 will be even better ;D
-
Hexagonal tiles?
Hexagonal tiles!!!
I'm sold, even though I never have the patience anyway.
-
After reading the changes, I'm a bit more interested, but still :-\
-
Civ series were never for people with an interest spine of a goldfish. I started with civ2, skipped civ3 as I don't recognize it as a part of civ, loved 4th edition and will probably check out the numero cinque.

Some news regarding CIV5
"This is the year of Civ" - Sid Meier
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/this-is-the-year-of-civilization-says-meier
"But looking further out, there's so much energy and dynamism in this industry... Every day there's something new, and that's a big part of being excited about being in games," he added.
According to Meier, new platforms such as Facebook and Xbox Live have opened up new gaps in the market. "It's a really cool time to be a game designer. We've certainly seen the indie games movement put a lot of new energy into gaming," he said. "The whole big budget thing has gone away and that's opened up a whole lot of new opportunities."
-
What do you guys think of the new non-stacked units feature? I think (unless they've changed it) that you can now only have 1 unit per hex so you have to lay out your battle lines properly with missile troops being able to shoot over the front hex/rank. Intriguing but I don't think the Civ terrain is big enough to try and simulate battles like this.
-
They're going in the right direction I must say but I'm as well quite uncertain how it will work with the CIV layout
Anyhow, can't believe how good CIV5 looks from the screenshots
-
Box art uncovered!
OK but not that beautiful but still very 'CIV'
-
I'd be sold if they had put in some sort of Total War battle system. As for now, Civ games have always bored me. Same with games like Anno1404, great game at the start, but without some proper action it will eventually get bored and I couldn't possibly end a game.
I'll check it out, but it'll take a lot to get me into it. :-X
-
Yeah, well. Civilization is a drug.
Once you get hooked you are fucked :D
Remember the Civaholics video they released before the release of Civilization IV?
Check this out!

Ach Sander, you just lack the Civ spirit. ;)
For me this is going to be the game of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ive played civilization since civ1 on amiga 500, 20 years ago...
Ditto...ah, the good old Amiga days, back when you had to wait for the intro movie to play through while the world was generating... :)
I'm looking forward to Civ V, it'll be interesting to see how the hex-tiles and new combat system affect gameplay.
...Though the game i would really really like to be remade is...
ALPHA CENTAURI
Well they gave Colonization a graphical spit 'n polish and re-released it, so why not?
-
Civ 4 is fun, I still remember playing as Romans and pwn people with my Unique Unit. They just don't believe their eyes when they have only like 2 archers defending their towns against my horde.
Apart from that serious balance issue with Romans, I don't particularly hated the Civ 4 combat system, you just need to bring some catapults/trebuchets to win. It is more a trouble fighting an AI, sometimes.
I am not very optimistic on hexagonal tiles, I think squares fits better in human brains. (it is impossible to construct a stuff with simple shape with merely hexagons.

That's the Civ spirit, what the graph fails to mention is that the red portion is watching the PC / other players take their turns.

Demo announced! It'll be out at some point in September before the game itself is released (24th Sept).

Coming already. Damn im not finished evolving my skills in Civ4 yet.
Hell, I'm not even finished with my skills in CIV2!
-
hehe i can barely remember civ2 ;D Though i do remember i had hell of a good time with it
I guess i think civ3 is the best one yet made. Civ4 have its drawbacks
-
GT reviews it and they like it good!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE3M4fQAKPE&feature=player_embedded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE3M4fQAKPE&feature=player_embedded)
The whole new way of watching and connecting with other Civ's leaders looks great, more feeling into it now
EDIT: And demo on the release day (24th!)
Pray to the Gods men that your computers will handle it, thy I know I might have problem (at least after a few hours with a big map and lots of units and Civ's)
-
Ok, I was reading local game magazine and they had review of civ5 there. Even tough I never liked civs, new battle system did sound quite good. Whole game actually sounded better than civs ever were. I might actually check this out ;D
-
I heard the demo will come on the US release date which is 3 days earlier than the EU release. So we might be looking at a demo on tuesday! ^^
-
You can Pre-order civ V on Steam for $50 USD

Wow, 50 USD? It's 50€ for us europeans.
50 dollars is 38€, can I somehow buy stuff in dollars instead of euros?
Edit: From steam ofcourse ;)
-
Edit: From steam ofcourse ;)
Not from Steam directly, but you could have an American friend buy it for you and then gift it to you, if you like.
Other than that you can buy in the UK via amazon.co.uk. Thanks to the low Pound you can get some nice bargains.
-
- Civ V on pre-order from Play.com (£24.99).
- Friday 24th booked off work
As long as it arrives in the post on time and is unlocked on Steam at a sensible time then I'm looking forward to a full day of Civ V... :D
-
So, what makes these Civ' games so special?
Should I buy a bunch of copies for my friends for Christmas and spend the holidays playing with them 24/7?
Convince me.
-
Play the demo when it comes out tomorrow. Until then, here's the manual: http://www.civilization5.com/#/community/feature_manual
Civ in a nutshell: build up your civilisation from a nomadic tribe to a globe-spanning modern superpower. 6000 (I think) years of gameplay controlling how you expand, what you focus on, what you research, what you build; all while interacting with the other civs around you. Win by various means: conquest, economic, cultural or launch a spaceship.
As for playing with friends: most of my Civ experience (II through to IV) has been singleplayer though I have played Civ IV multiplayer quite a bit but I've found SP to be more enjoyable as you can set the pace of the game yourself (you don't have to wait for your friend to finish his massively long and complex turn before you all move onto the next one).
-
Civ games are so addicting, its ridiculous.
First night of Civ IV,
Got it at 10PM
Installed by 10,30PM
Played till 3 oclock in the morning

I really hope they improve the multiplayer from Civ IV, as the balance in starting locations was so horrific you basically couldn't play it competitively againist other people. It seemed like practically every game I played had someone starting on an island or similiarly bad position and falling so far behind in tech by the time they got caravels that they got completely steamrolled by players who had been able to trade since the beginning of the game.
It was still a lot of fun to play, but you had to ally and fight the computer players as you couldn't really fight eachother in most games.

Stayed up many a night till 2AM playing this with friends via LAN. That hurts come 6AM. I remember a couple years back playing this until 7AM with my wife in a game that got out of control. Of course that is about the time my kid wakes up so there was no rest. My only hope is that our computers are to shitty to run this.
-
;D
Probably going to buy this off o' steam, I liked Cid Meier's Pirates and used to watch my cousin play civ 2, so why not hop onto the civ train now?
-
But to truely enjoy and grasp if they made it any better go and grab Civ IV now!
Play it till Civ V is there and enjoy! ^^
-
Downloading the demo as we speak... 8mins left!
-
Link please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
FOUND IT! DAMN IT WASN'T ON THE MAIN PAGE AT STEAM! ^^

IVE PLAYED THE DEMO AND ITS AWSOME!
-
8min remaining and I'm eating my table atm.... damnit my evening is MADE! ^^
-
Estimated download time 2 hours?! Argh, damned be the slowness of the internet. I don't have time for this shit, I have school tomorrow and I still have to watch Top Gear. God damn it.

Just finished the demo. Will buy it!

Who cares. The game rocks! ^^

IVE PLAYED THE DEMO AND ITS AWSOME!
Ditto!
It's Civ but sufficiently different to buy V (having already owned II, III, IV and all their expansion packs...) - I love it.
-
I'll wait for the "Complete Edition" thank you, with all the myriad DLC's and store-chain exclusive civs included at a reasonable price, and lots of removed features re-introduced.
-

Downloading the demo tonight. If I like I will buy. My greatest E-guilt is that I never bought IV or its expansions. I did buy Civilization AGA (AMIGA), Civ II (Playstation), and Civ III (IBM PC). If I buy Civ IV I think that will atone for my sins.
BTW: Anyone run the demo yet on a shit system? Don't know how my 6800's will like this newest one yet.
-
friend of mine did run it on medium with gf 9600gso I think
-
If anyone wants to play Civ IV with me, I'll make a game- Pass will be FH2.
-
Beyond the Sword? I can't go back to old Civ IV.
-
Beyond the Sword? I can't go back to old Civ IV.
BtS patcher isn't working for me, sorry. :-\ Just regular Civ IV. Still pretty damn fun.
Well, screw it. It's been 20 minutes and nobody's joined.
-
No luck for me, the demo crashes immediately after double clicking on the icon.
-
Did you choose the correct installation? It comes with two sets. One for DirectX9 and one for DX10/11.
I just finished my 3rd go and finally managed to take a city state on warlord. Goddamn those Genuans are hard to take, even after you kill all units. Me likes. The positive thing is even if you have a Level 2 frontier city it has a basic defense against barbarian hordes compared to Civ IV where you were fucked if they came before you had a chance to build any defence. ^^
-
Been playing civ 5 since 8 o clock yesterday morning its 3 am tomorrow T.T
-

So true, it's definitely addictive.

Tried demo, didn't convince me to buy it. It's actually weird why I don't like this game. I like strategy games alot in general and total wars for example, are one of my favourite games ever. Civ just doesn't work for me :/

See there are two schools here. I on my part can't enjoy Total War for long. Civ is more my type of Strategy.
Anyhow TW is realtime and Civ is turnbased, so not really comparable.

Actually, TW is turn based also, and usually I just auto resolve battles, unless it is really tight and I suspect I lose if I auto resolve ;).
I still try to give this another go...
-
ajappat: tiny map, quick speed and 3 AI = not the real civ experience. You'll want at least 10 AI ( I always went with 18) on at least a large map, with marathon (or whatever it's called these days) speed. Then you get the real civ experience.
-
Played the demo and kind of liked it. Will probably buy it when it gets bit cheaper.
-
No luck for me, the demo crashes immediately after double clicking on the icon.
Same thing for me. I guess I won't be getting this game either :-\

-
I know this is old news by now but...
DEMO!!!!1111
-
Best movie intro ever.
-
Just had the weirdest spawn ever in all my years of civ. int civ 5 i spawn on an island surrounded completely by mountains i had a total of 3 cities until i discovered flight only to learn over half of the other civs where already wiped of the face of the planet. Weirdest and funnest game ever.
-
Haha, thats brilliant ;D
-
Oh god Civ 5 is pure evil... I was sick today and since being stuck at home left me alone with my PC and the shiny Civ5 box there was just so much I could do... and so I fired it up around 10am when I felt better, clicked the first end of turn button und then... well just now I started to feel hungry and so I looked at the watch and... oh my, I lost 7 hours to the game and didn't notice it.
Anyhow I love liberating city states and sponsoring wars by contributing units and money. ^^
-
Oh no, Civ 5 released today -> brother bought it -> I didn't know it was Steam game (no, seriously didn't) -> can be installed on one pc only (well ok, on one steam account) -> I have to buy myself a own copy -> not buying
Seriously, this game realllllly dissapointed me :( Maybe because I didn't read enough about it, this information must be old as heck but I just realised this.... Well I'll just spend my moneys one something else, nuff said.
-
And it's just not possible to borrow your brother's Steam account every now and then? I mean, it looks like you were going to play with the same copy anyway?
-
Yeah ville, just install your brothers steam account on your pc, then install the game and run it in offline mode. That way both of you can play at the same time.
-

Meh, I guess he will never give out his steam id and password :P
-
Well your loss. :)
It's an awesome new part of the series.
-
It was on Amazon for 25 quids. Bought it.
-
For the financially challenged, I salute skidrow. (60€ on my bank account and I'm still supposed to eat for a few weeks)
Already made my first mod: Marathon speed now has the same production times as Standard, but research takes a bit longer.
-
Still waiting for it in the mail. :(

Similar for me - except I took the day off as holiday and I had to go and fetch the packet from the Post Office as the letter box in my front door was too small to fit it through when the postman tried delivering it yesterday... Spent 7hrs playing continuously - just a standard-size continents map on Warlord difficulty. So good! Just had a break for L4D and The Wire with my wife when she got home from work and returning to Civ now...
-
Ok 20 to 12AM. I'm prying myself loose from the game now. ^^
But I must say Civ V has the best unit to date in any Civ game: The Giant Death Robot!
Muhahahahahahahahah....MUHAHAHAHAHAHAH.....MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA *coughs*
-
Out of his mind.
Remember boys and girls: Take breaks whilst playing.
-
No luck still. Read pages and pages on forums of bug related issues and no solution worked. The demo still crashes right after double clicking on the icon.
Lots of people seem to have the same problem.
Shame, it was the only game I was really anticipating over the past years.
-
sid meier i hate you i hate you i hate you hate you i hate you. where did those 20 hours go you bugger!

What operating system are you using? Upon clicking the Demo in Steam two windows should pop up after each other. One where steam asks you whether you want the DX9 version or the DX10/11 and then again a window from civ 5 asking the exact same thing but in reversed order. Could it be that the game tries to launch itself without asking on your PC?
-
My preorder is coming late...
I CANT LIVE ANY MORE! :-[
-
Time literately caught up with this concept. This just doesn't cut the cheese anymore, but should be fun for the fans :)
-
I wouldn't say it's just for fans. I believe there is a market out there with enough people who don't need games that play as if they are on ecstasy.
-
@ N24Reporter:
I'm using Windows XP. I only have the option of selecting DX9. An error message appears after I launched the game but the intro keeps on playing if I don't click ok on the error window. It then turns to a black screen after the intro is finished.
I tried updating the video drivers and changing the account name, since many reported that having accentuated characters in it (é, è, ö, ä...) caused the crash.
-
Time literately caught up with this concept.
I don't think time can literally catch up to something :P
The game is fun, save for a few weird things, like early buildings taking a really long time to build even in developed cities, even though the same doesn't hold for wonders. I don't care what your set up is, but a wonder should never take fewer turns to build than a granary.
I've been having some technical difficulties with it also, though. I had to completely reinstall steam after I first downloaded it because immediately after I tried to start it for the first time all my games started to give that "this game is unavailable" error.
-
I tried updating the video drivers and changing the account name, since many reported that having accentuated characters in it (é, è, ö, ä...) caused the crash.
Sounds like a reasonable start. What does the error window say?
-
It's the typical "Program has encountered a problem and needs to be shut down" message.
I'm puzzled as to what to do since 2k forums have so many topics on related bugs and so many crazy solutions that worked for some but not for me.
-
Hmm sorry, I'm at a loss here as well.
Could it be your Graphic's drivers being outdated?
-
Played some MP tonight and all i can say is that im dissapoint. I couldnt see the save button so i had to press Ctrl+S to save the game and even worse was that MP doesnt have animations of the leaders nor movement so it seemed like they would be teleporting from place to place :-\
-

Wait, you wanted to save a running multiplayer game or at the end? Doesn't it offer you that choice once you quit it?
The missing movement animations is odd, did you check your settings, there is a button where you can switch them off to save time.

Just had the weirdest spawn ever in all my years of civ. int civ 5 i spawn on an island surrounded completely by mountains i had a total of 3 cities until i discovered flight only to learn over half of the other civs where already wiped of the face of the planet. Weirdest and funnest game ever.
Things like that make CIV so damn amazing, every time you start a new game you never know what's gonna happen
-

So true.
I love the little stories that might unfold during gaming. I for example had a really peaceful run only having to fend off Arctic pirates which attacked my trade routes with cruisers now and then, but still enjoyed giving the city states my covert support by supplying them with weapons while the British tried really hard to expand against them. (to bad that you can't gift A-Bombs and Planes....^^ )
-
I wouldn't say it's just for fans. I believe there is a market out there with enough people who don't need games that play as if they are on ecstasy.
Hey, I play Silent Hunter as well! I ain't no graphics whore :P
I just think a couple of factions and basicly more of the same is not enough anymore, but I guess if it plays like a CIV2 in HD all is well. Most of the current buyers probably weren't even born then.
-
Played the demo until it told me it was over, thank god it did. I would have never stopped if that had been the full game.
Ramses and me were like: Wazzup bitches, I got the motherfucking chariot with shooting arrows! And then Bismarck and Alexander got pissed because I raped two city-states in one second (Rio and Brussels)
And Copenhagen was being overrun by barbarians, those silly Danes were like: omfg lol wtf thank you Ramses for your über chariots and I was like: no prob I'ma gonna go plunder Germany through Rome, wanna come KKTHXBBQl8r
And then the demo ended
Thank god

A great Angry Joe Review of Civ V. He sums it up quite well. +g+

Haha, great review.
I loved this:
Best Part: When you crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women!

One more turn... Just one more turn...

Tried the demo once more, got a chance to try Darius and his Persia
Bloody England and their Queen started to fuck things up by buying every damn city-state in range
I made friends by acting like a fire department, only difference is that they call me when
they find a barbarian camp :D
EDIT: And also, damn this game runs good! My laptop is anything but fresh and god knows I have had problems with some new games for some time
-
Buy the real game and have even more fun. ^^
Just like Joe. ^^
-
Game is awsome
I dont know how it got such bad reviews on Amazon.
It misses some things like adjusting science rate etc but the rest is solid.
And combat pwns. No more can Knights kill my Helicopter gunships!
-
-gets home, trys out demo for the first time at 3:15 p.m.-
-checks clock-
O fudge, 8p.m.
A definite buy in the near future ^^

I seem to have found an extremely easy way to win at this game(won't work on Pangea maps though)
1)Don't explore any of the ruins you find at the beginning of the game.
2) Get a pikeman or a similar unit that takes a very long time to become obsolete
3) Explore all the ruins with that one unit, leveling it up from the occasional "your troops have found advanced weapons" events.
4)Destroy your enemies with the mechanized infantry you now have in 500 A.D. I haven't tried it with cavalry yet but I assume having tanks would work equally well.
It might not be much fun to kill NPCs in this way, but it's pretty hilarious to make your friend think you're 1500 years ahead of him in tech.
-
I am :| Hi, and I am a proud owner of Civilization 5. I suspect with the coming weeks, that I will have many neardeath experiences due to lack of sustenance while playing this game. Thank you.
-
Got it in the mail finally I like it!

This is theoretically possible but will only work on a low difficulty level where the chances of advanced weapons are way higher and only if you are lucky enough to live quite far off since your AI enemy is hunting those ruins as well.
Cavalry is the end for your mounted warriors branch, so no tanks. Sorry.
-

I specified archipelago/continents specifically due to the fact that otherwise AI will go after your ruins. And although the highest difficulty I've tried it on was Normal, you only need a couple of lucky ruins to get the troops to level up thousands of years worth of upgrades with some units. Pikemen, which are easy to get early game, go to mechanized infantry in only 4 upgrades IIRC, and it's not like ruins are uncommon. Admittedly I've only tried it twice, both times on archipelago, but I don't see why it wouldn't work equally well if you had your own continent.
-
Just saying, I played it on the 5th level and I got in both runs of the game 2 upgrades.
On the other hand playing as Germans I got like 10% of the barbarians joining me where the game spoke of 50%. ^^
-
Civ V supports Steam Cloud, how awesome. I'm using two computers so it's very handy.
-
I've tried playing demo many times now but everytime my game freezes eventually. Today I was extremely lucky and was able to play 64 turns before it happened. Odd thing is it doesn't matter what settings I use, be it lowest or highest, the freeze will always come at some point. :(
-
Been in love with this franchise since the original Civ came out. If I may reminisce for a second... I'll never forget showing it to a friend and him and I playing it on laptops for the first time. Eventually I noticed that my shoulders were really starting to ache. I looked at the clock, then turned to my friend:
Me: Hey man.
Friend: Yea
Me: Dude, its like 4 am!
Friend: No, that's not possible...
Haven't bought Civ V yet because, while I meet almost all the min and recommended specs, I only have an nvidia 9600gt. That meets the minimum but not the recommended graphics card.
Has anybody tried running it with that graphics card? I would like to know if it worth playing on my system.

I got a laptop from early 2009 with a GF9300m GS series 256MB and CIV works fine, doesnt look perfect but it runs good
-
Finally i have it, i just have to finish my last Civ4 game first. I think my computer should be good enough, if not i simply just have to get a new one. Civ5 has to be played.
-
I have an NVidia 8400 and it runs fine
-
So...
CIV5, now in my possession
Farewell cruel world
-
My first nuke (and last) launched was on England, Elizabeth was being a bitch and kept storing troops right next to my border.
-
Not to double post, but how the crap do I assemble the rocket? All the pieces are near my capital and yet it doesn't give me some sort of special option when trying to put them in the city
-
My name is Darius I of Persia
I have laid all of Russia and Egypt below my feet
City-states such as Genoa, Belgrad, Edinburgh and Dublin have all been annexed by the mighty Persian empire
Now I turn my eyes to the west, there's one continent left. Filled with Germans, Chinese and Africans who will all become a subject of the Persian Empire
And now some things that's just funny and typical CIV stuff that happened so far during this round
- Robert E. Lee is the best General in the whole Persian Army
- Persian Immortals and catapults surrounding Moscow and St.Petersburg with Catharine begging for mercy
- Had one a ship with a Persian Scout sent out to sea looking for Helsinki, haven't found it yet got some more places to check and the year is soon 1700 AD
Another thing that I love with CIV5
- The return of the advisors. I loved these guys in CIV2, after that it has just been some tips here and there but now they are back in style helping out if you want them to
- The HUD, everything is easy to find, the only thing I can't find is the Civilopedia
But what happened to the spies and espionage from CIV4:BTS? Is it possible later in the game or removed completley ?
-
Removed.
and I nuked the hell out of Persia last game, China too :v
-
HI, i believe you need to launch them into space first
-
Not to double post, but how the crap do I assemble the rocket? All the pieces are near my capital and yet it doesn't give me some sort of special option when trying to put them in the city
They need to be in your capital (which should also contain the Apollo Program). They are civilian units so there can't be a worker in the city at the same time and you can only have one SS section in the city at one time. One the SS section is in the capital one of its action buttons will be 'construct space ship' or something - this will add the section to the spaceship.
-
I think you don't need the Apollo Program to be in your capital, but the launchpad will always be constructed in your capital, which is a bit odd. ^^
-
Im really eager to try Civ5, but my last Civ4 campaign is so über so i just have to finish it first. Its better than ive ever managed, the year is only 1300 AD and i have 1000 points more than the 2nd best (single player). Everyone hates me, but no one dare to mess with the mighty Chinese 8)
-
...the only thing I can't find is the Civilopedia
But what happened to the spies and espionage from CIV4:BTS? Is it possible later in the game or removed completley ?
Press F1 or click on 'HELP' up in the top right of the screen.
They're saving the cloak 'n dagger stuff for the expansions/DLC, I'll bet... ;)
Bought it, installed it (and Steam :(), and started playing. Things were moving along nicely early on, but something seemed off. A short while later (the turn before Stonehenge was completed in my capital to be exact), I end my turn and the first message I see next turn is "Stonehenge has been built in a distant land."...
FFFUUU-...
Typical bloody Civ...and all's well. :)
-
Hehe at least now you get an 'achievement' when the PC does that to you 10 times in a row. (see the attachment)...I already got it (as did 75% of all Civ players). All is well. ;D
-
'Booby prize' is more like it.
Good to know I'm not the only victim of the computer "cheating"... ;D
-
Baaah, damn this game
Got work in 6 hours and was going to bed since about 3 hours ago!
Still in my first "round" with mighty Persia
Just conquered Germany, it was a blast. German landknechts and longsword men tried to stop my advance but Persian Spitfire's and B52 bombers did a good job and later Persian paratroopers and infantry moved in, starting with Munich.
I really like the AI in CIV5 compared to the previous CIV games
After a bit into the war with Germany Bismarck actually understood that he could not win the war in a straight fight and pulled back and tried to slow down my advance so he could negotiate a cease-fire.
So, the year is 1969. The Persian empire is the greatest and now there's only Askia left on his continent.
He's not stronger then me but he'll put up a fight
Here's my general (think it was Akbar) and my invasion fleet, the year is 1925 and for 1 - 2 years now the Germans has stopped my previous invasions (mainly due to too small armies from my part)
Besides, am I the only one to miss this?
Downloadable content
Besides the 18 civilizations available in the standard retail version, additional civilizations will be available as downloadable content (DLC). So far Babylonia under Nebuchadnezzar II has been announced as a bonus civilization included in the Steam and Direct2Drive Digital Deluxe Editions. Additionally, several DLC map packs were offered as a pre-order bonus from various retailers: Steam, "Cradle of Civilization: Mesopotamia"; Amazon.com, "Cradle of Civilization: Asia"; Gamestop and Play.com, "Cradle of Civilization: The Mediterranean"; and Walmart, "Cradle of Civilization: The Americas." Both scenarios and standalone maps will be offered as future DLC, with the first "Double Civilization and Scenario Pack" tentatively scheduled for a late 2010 release.
-
Why would anyone buy any DLC's when the mods are going to be over 9000% better.
-
I really like the AI in CIV5 compared to the previous CIV games
Sorry but the AI is dumb compared to older Civ games. Granted now it is more aggressive, but the diplomacy is something you can wipe your bottom with. ^^
-
I think the disc edition (at least the one sold in Finnish stores) comes with three of those "Cradle" DLC's - America, Asia and Mediterranean. But those don't contain any extra civs, do they, they're just scenarios which I never played in any Civ?
Still waiting for the Civ V Complete (and reintroduction of religion, spies, corporations, etc.) before I bother to invest.
-
So my game as Darius has ended, domination victory.
Chieftain was a bit too easy but I still had a great time all the way
My mighty Persia was at war almost the entire time
Some of the best moments
- Robert E. Lee having some seriously awesome moments over and over and always coming out on top
leading Immortals towards the German shores
- Dropping The Bomb, twice. You hear a plane, you see a plane, everything goes white. And what's left is what my Persian tanks will mop up
Next up, Rome on a higher level of difficulty
-
Are the maps bigger or smaller than those in Civ IV? I think the ones in IV are too small, but that's just me.
-
Are the maps bigger or smaller than those in Civ IV? I think the ones in IV are too small, but that's just me.
I actually thought about that earlier, I played a small map with about 4 or 5 AI CIV's and I gotta say, small is big in CIV5. Can't even imagine how my laptop would handle medium or large or even huge!
EDIT: Oh, and damn those paratroopers can do some serious damage. Had one unit of those who cut through a whole civilization almost by itself!
-
They can go pretty big, however the large ones lag a lot, at least on multiplayer. My computer is pretty powerful, but the game I tried on a really big map(multiplayer, but against someone I knew who also has a powerful computer) was unplayable by 1800 A.D. simply because of how bad it was lagging at the beginning of every turn.
Granted, I haven't played it in a while though, due to how broken multiplayer was in general when it came out, so maybe some of this has been fixed by patches. Also, the combat is a lot more fun so a big map is not as necessary as it was in the previous games, as Rawhide said.
-
About to round off my second session of CIV5, year is 1900 and I'm Caesar.
I go to war too often, gotta aim for diplomatic victory or something like that
Been at war since 300 AD...
-
Yeah the bigger maps are fairly resource hungry.
First game I played was on a small map and it ran smooth as silk (running in DX11 mode at 1600x1200).
The game I'm playing atm is on a large map and when it jumps (read: jerks) to a unit on the other side of the map, the land is grey and you can watch it ground textures load in... ::)
I would've thought a HD5770 (1Gb) would be more than enough to run a strategy game like Civ.
And getting back to this:
Hehe at least now you get an 'achievement' when the PC does that to you 10 times in a row. (see the attachment)...I already got it (as did 75% of all Civ players). All is well. ;D
I got this so-called "achievement" before I even finished the first game, a game during which I only attempted to build 4 or 5 wonders... ::)
Maybe the guy who comes up with these "achievements" needs a holiday...I mean, what next?
- The 3...2...1...We have liftoff! Award
Successfully install and launch the game.
Go Steam... :P

There's a good-looking patch on its way!

AI victory emphasis improvements (more efficient end-game when focusing on Science and Diplo victories).
AI should colonize other continents regularly.
AI will emphasize production of an Ocean going explorer unit when the time comes.
Adjust Napoleon to make him more likely to go for culture.
More aggressive second wave expansion (mostly off shore) after initial empire building and consolidation has occurred.
Optimization when finding routes (pathfinder improvement).
Multiple tweaks and bug fixes.
AI will now build ranged and mobile units more in line with the flavor settings.
Multiple defensive AI tweaks.
Gameplay
Cities heal more quickly.
Only allow one upgrade per unit from a goody hut.
UI
Tweaked the single-player score list to hide the civs of unmet ai players.
Diplomacy

Added info tooltip for an AI leader’s mood. Lists things that are making an AI player happy/upset.

New custom leader responses (Serious Expansion Warning, Aggressive Military, Luxury Exchange, Borders Exchange, Gift Request).
Modding

Sounds good!
You guys got a good view on the current mod status for CIV5, anything you guys are keeping an eye on or anything you just gotta try?
-
Now im soon done with my 4th session of Civ5. I guess i have come to some conclutions. Most things are improved to the better, except the combat system. It makes a new way of strategy, but more like a boardgame strategy not representing real combat on a global scale. Sometimes it turns out to be very ineffective with units blocking eachother and to take a city may take several turns longer just cause of that.
The ranged units is a very good improvement. That you actually weaken the unit with artillery, not just erase their fortification bonus. I guess the cooperation between land units, ranged units and planes is alot better. You need them all, alot more than in Civ 4.
Ive won conquering victory, diplomatical victory and now im trying cultural victory. Though no war no fun. I guess i usually will go for military victory in the future.
Golden age is also alot more relevant in this game. You may get unlimited golden ages i think, compared to 1 or maybe 2 ( i think ) in civ4. The city states, natural wonders, and the new sea-transport system and all of it is alot better than civ4 imo. And best of all, no religion :)
-
Anyone got Gods & Kings yet?
-
Yes here.
I have it, but unluckily I only managed to play it for about an hour till now.
All in all this review summarizes my feelings for the add-on quite well.
http://www.destructoid.com/review-civilization-v-gods-and-kings-227210.phtml
To sum it up: Many nice things and worth a buy, but unfortunately it doesn't return Civ V to Civ IV's roots.
-
I've all but given up on V, the battle mechanics and hex map are great, but that's about it.
It seems that if you're not out to crush everyone with your military, you have no hope of winning.
Although I'll probably will get G&K just to try and breathe some life back into it.
FWIW, I reinstalled IV on the weekend, and played it for a couple of hours...it felt so right. :)
-
It seems that if you're not out to crush everyone with your military, you have no hope of winning.
Most of my victories have been non military :/
I've yet to purchase the expansion, but it looks promising indeed.
-
Really? I must be doing something wrong... :)
-
Any Eternal War fans here?
-
You mean this?: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117862-The-Eternal-War-Ten-Years-of-a-Single-Civ-2-Game
I'm surprised he hasn't given up considering he's been stuck in a vicious cycle for 1700 years.
-
BTW: The Demo of G&Ks is out on steam.
-
G&K is an definite improvement, but the AI still leaves a lot to be desired.
Overall, I think Civ IV is still better than V.
-
The worst thing is that I want to agree with Cannonfodder on this one but I still can't find arguments.
Still, I think CIV2 is the best. Followed by CIV3 and then CIV4.
Retro <3
-
It's just your mind that's painting things in a good way... I've recently found my old Civ 2 box and was appalled by the game-play and gfx. ^^
-
I ought to get back into Civ. Fun game.
