I hear you... the worst were the custom desert maps, had names like sand dune which told you you should expect the most effort of the mapper being the choice of vehicles, otherwise it was a flat plane with nothing more than the enemy
Some custom maps were pretty impressive, such as the semi-fictitious Reichsbahn - Don't know how it played online, but I tried it once with a friend who was so much a hater of FH since I begun playing it so much over contemporary games...
Well, the scenario goes, we were crossing a bridge after capping the enemy's flank, effectively stopping all heavy tanks from joining the frey. We were backtrackig to cap a bunker in the middle of an open field, from which an MG and a Stug were terrorizing our guys @ the next flag... Enemy infantry begunn spawning right outside the bunker with fausts and were taking shots at me... He was on foot, I in a tank....Well, it wasn't long before even he was shouting, enemy 11 o'clock... :-)
Real Badseed's maps weren't bad either, minimalist, but lovely
Truth is, save for the limit of the engine, FH might have been the most moddable game of all time and later maps and mods had increasingly advanced features that seemed impossible in earlier times... Heck, FH1 could have all that FH2 currently has... But might have been 30GB and taken 3hours to load
The biggest thing I miss in it though, was the towed-88... So, so wish it were somehow in FH2
