Techniques for dealing with and occupying armor?
« on: 30-12-2011, 03:12:35 »
Simple, a thread which begs to give tactics, techniques, and various methods of ridding and using armor.

My basic personal tactics:
Always shoot the the flattest part/side/rear. For example, the gears and togs in the tracks on the side of a tank, or the side armor on a Panther. The problem with killing panthers is the sides are the only real vulnerable spot, as the rear is slanted as is the front and everywhere except the sides.

If you see a mineflag, never follow that route or run over the mineflag. This should be pretty obvious, is detailed in the FH2 training videos, and in general is common sense. I however find that many people like to runover mines even when warned of with flags.

Always keep AP loaded (in tanks)
This way, you are prepared to engage anything. If a tank pops out of nowhere, you can nail him. If infantry come out, most tanks (excluding Stug) have a ready coaxial machine gun. If you load the special rounds (HEAT/HVAP, unless default round) you'll waste 1 of 3 rounds already next time you see something.

Don't expose your flanks
Simple, just don't. Its obvious because your flanks allow you to be instantly killed.

Opinions of the above and your tactics below. I know the above are obvious, but I feel that however obvious the mine flag one was needed. I hope you guys can think of far, FAR better tactics.

Some 'indirect' infantry tips I guess, but anyway:

- When an enemy tank is capping or covering a flag throw smoke at him (if you have it of course). That'll at least make him nervous and move from his comfort position, making him more vulnerable.

- Always spot a tank if you can, especially the heavier ones that take some teamwork to get rid off (Mathilda, Tiger, etc.). When it's quiet on the chat I usually type down the coordinates (and yell 'tank spotted') if my current class can't spot properly.

- Try to remember where the pick-up AT kits are, especially on maps like Port Au Bessin, where you don't have spawnable AT kits. Tanks can dominate flags if nobody is actively trying to get rid off it.

- If ground attack planes are present, try to get in touch with whoever is flying at that time. Usually it's only one or two guys per level that are hogging the planes (not a bad thing in case of a good pilot) and you can directly ask them to take out a spotted tank.
FH2 is the game, DarklyDreamingDexter is the name.

mud buddha gave some great things. Trowing smoke (Or shooting smoke) against tanks is a pretty good tactic. On Bardia i just kept trowing smoke grenades at enemy matildas in wich a platoon buddy went in with the mines

If infantry come out, most tanks (excluding Stug) have a ready coaxial machine gun.

* - stug III G (late) and the stug IV both have a coax mg
* - Jagdpanzer IV, Hetzer and Jagdpanther also have no mg

some tips for assault guns:

most people forget that you can hide them perfectly. get into a good position (behind bushes, in front of a building so your silhouette isnt spotted as easily) and pick out the enemy vehicles.

pick out the long barrel shermans/ hellcats first.

as awesome reaper already stated you should prefer to load AP shells in normal tanks. if you dont have a coax mg its hard to decide whether to take HE or AP shells. when in doubt load AP.
indicators you should load HE instead:

- the kill messages show that a lot of hostile tanks have been taken out (the name of the player who killed your guys in a tank is shown as a killed victim). always keep track of the kill messages if you can!
- you are not on a map like operation cobra with a lot of tanks (always load AP on cobra)
- a lot of hostile tanks have been spotten on a total different location of the map.
- know the numbers of enemy vehicles on the map (you can roughly estimate it) and when there is a reasonable amount of losses for them you can load HE for a minute.

also you should know where the routes of enemy tanks are (for example the long barrel shermans on cobra spawn on the hill near farm, hellcats often rush over the field next to the lake, stugs spawn at the farm and camp there).

Those things are hard to spot, really, i drove into man of them because i couldn't spot them in time.
They are pretty dark, and when you are driving a tank you are looking out for enemy, not some flags on the ground.

Smoke is your friend, it is probably one of the best way to harass an enemy tank.

If I tank and get smoked I'll fall back (and probably shoot HE/MG angrily into smoke if no enemy tanks are around). The last thing I want is to have someone installed landmines/explosives around me before the smoke subsides.

So yeah, do throw the smoke, but don't stay in the smoke if the enemy tank retreated. He'll likely be really angry about that!

Before in the days of desert wars, the way to kill a tank is to put landmines around him and hope he moves. Sometimes he just stool still - but yeah, jump around him or even shoot at him and try to make him notice you... he'll move in anger :D (and proceed to heaven) So yes, jumping around a tank COULD distract him. But if you don't have follow-up measures (escape/tank killers) it is a pretty risky business.

Btw, what weapon he notice you to carry also would have great effects on his mind: I personally don't fear people running around with SMG since they carry nothing but simple bullets. But if you just show your rifle and run around me I'll be freaked out and want to take you out since you have a chance carrying explosives/landmines/panzerfaust. So if you are a SMG guy... well. Don't do that run-around thing.

Handheld AT are pretty much the most effective way of taking out an enemy armour. I rarely die from mines/explosives in a tank due to those combat experience in the early FH2 versions. But handheld AT is something even the best tanker (I am certainly not best, but experienced) cannot avoid without infantry cover. That's why people like anubis love heavier tanks as they could take a hit from infantry AT.
