Off-Topic / Re: Third WW2 Series From Spielberg and Hank
« on: 22-01-2013, 13:01:01 »
Of course, one must happy with this news, BoB was more or less the best WW2 production ever for most people. The Pacific was somewhat disappointing compared to BoB, but still very interesting and good. So yeah, I'm expecting that this will be quality stuff as well.

Regarding the theme, in order to ensure ratings and financing, as well as general interest. The US always has to be the primary focal point. That is never gonna change.
So it's the airwar then, and after this the only things left are the naval and secret service stories (please BBC do a good series on the secret service in WW2 - ratings will go through the roof). They will be looking at Memphis Belle hopefully, can't remember any other good modern airwar movies.

Time to read the book, and indeed hope that they manage to write in a story on a German pilot for example and his life in Germany to make it a bit less one-sided.

On another note, where is this movie: http://digitaljournal.com/article/330867

General Discussion / Re: Maps that you love to hate?
« on: 15-01-2013, 18:01:45 »
Maps that you love to hate.. It's a shame that we hate some maps, they are designed with beauty. Especially since the 64+ era it has become clear that some maps just aren't that much fun without 80+ players, especially since often there are only 40 players or something on it.

Maps I chose were:
- Gazala
- Olympus
- Mareth Line
- El Alamein
- Cobra

Why these? Just like some label Brest or Tunis fragfests (which they are from 50 players and onwards). The above maps need a lot of players to make it interesting, otherwise they tend to take hours. And because they tend to take up a lot of time and make player numbers drop often (when they start after 23.00h), these maps become tedious and overplayed. Especially because they are quite old.

Maps that really needed to be played more are these ones:
- Falaise (always good action)
- Hyacinth (Olympus is on every 3 hours, and yet I haven't played the EPIC Hyacinth since months)
- Purple Heart Lane (awesome)
- Sidi Razegh (I know lot's of people hate it for some reasons, but I just love the epic dashes across the airfield).

Bottom line: please remove Olympus and get Hyacinth in there!

Somehow this picture went viral here in Leiden, Netherlands. 22 year old student. I think it was because of the nice bike :)

You actually got injured by playing too much FH2?

So how longs this self-imposed ban of this favorite capten of mine gonna last?

About 10 years ago my username was still [GFAQS] AbuzerNL and I rocked BF42 around the clock. I played the desert mod a bit, and the Vietnam mod, both were nice but I also noticed this 'authentic' WW2 mod. I found it a bit weird in the first instance, since bf42 was already a ww2 themed game ( ;D).
The ww1 mod actually looked more interesting to me (bf1918? That never really got off the ground).

But I tried FH 0.5 or 0.7 and was instantly hooked. The community was nice and the game was really really good. I remember when it merged with the pacific mod, and boy there were so much maps to play on.
Fast forward to 2007, I just got around to buy a new pc before FH2 was released (such a long wait) and I am now enjoying FH on a weekly bases. Of course I miss some players from back in the day, I can't remember most of their names even. And I miss some players nowadays as well (has anybody seen Beatrix NL lately? Or VonSmall?)

Today, I enjoy the community and the board a lot. Like someone said before: nice, tech savy, people with a knack for history, warfare and WW2. Just like myself.

But I'm bothered by the low playercount at times and the schism between the regular (almost never played servers) and 762 server. Also the maps now become a bit boring at times, I can't enjoy Gazala or Totalize with 40 people anymore.  :-\
I guess that stuff gets to you after you play a game for 5 years (or 10 if you count my early FH days)

Last word goes out to the devs and players that keep this community and game going. Thanks for giving this important part of my leisure life. (Close second to alcohol)

Good for the people that found a job in one or 2 shots! That's how it was for me before the crisis.

Also, I notice that most of my friends who graduated in technical stuff didn't have any difficulties finding something. On the other hand, I majored in Public Administration, so with the govn cutbacks that's now a difficult sector to get into. I find that with most alpha studies this applies. Also, university/college masters and bachelors now makes you seriously overqualified for jobs such as project assistant.

Since this is a nice international forum with a good deal of young people, demographics alone dictate that a good portion of us is looking for a job.

The least thing we could do is support each other with tips and tricks in this process! Or at least good jokes  :)

Oh, as a side-project, I opened up a small little website, just to get the hang of managing one of these. www.DutchReview.com

No harm there Dukat, the article was written more from an entertaining point of view than a debating/serious criticism perspective.

Also, it's one of the very first steps of this young website (dutchreview.com that is). So if anyone would be kind enough to like/facebook/tweet/link/comment it, you would be most welcome.

And yeah NTH is right, the US election dominates European tv as well, especially the Dutch. And although we generally look down on the US election process, the last couple of years ours isn't much better and its more or less a fact that election trends in the US occur a few years later in the Netherlands (why hello nasty negative campaigning  :-* )

Loving the new episodes of Boardwalk empire now  ;D

I enjoyed myself with 2 seasons of the Borgias, I like its setting.

Jeeh, even with this server around all the time, player numbers are low all around. I guess the novelty of it is gone.

Still epic times when it is filled, all play tonight!

General Discussion / Re: My Grandfather.. a true war hero
« on: 04-09-2012, 13:09:50 »
Any chance of that photo being your grandfather or one of his brothers in training in 1939? Sand, trees and equipment make it look like the Grebbeberg or something.

Interesting find you had there Slayer, my grandfather was shipped off to Indonesia as well. It's really weird sometimes to think about, nowadays Indonesia is this huge nation and the Netherlands so tiny. And then to think we shipped of hundreds of thousands of young boys almost immediately after WW2 to re-occupy that territory, different times back then.

My grandfather was just like your father a young man in WW2, escaping forced labor by hiding in the attic and stuff. Shipped off as a captain to Indonesia, the man was a nerdy accountant for crying out loud! He never talked much about his experiences there, but he remained plagued by nightmares long after his return.
I´m still hoping to find such a diary of him like you did Slayer, and turn it around in a book-project.

If you really want the picture identified, try emailing it to the NIOD and the National Archives, I had some contacts there and both institutes are staffed with war-trivia liking nerds who have loads of spare time to research the hell out of that picture (and also make a good target for governmental cutbacks  ;) )
