Gaming / Re: Traction Wars
« on: 08-08-2015, 21:08:44 »
Booo at 2 years ... how in the world are they financing this project for that long?

And actually that brings up my biggest question about Traction Wars -- how does it plan to make money as a free to play game?

I would gladly pay $20-$30 for a quality WWII FPS ... I see no need to make it F2P. F2P actually makes me less excited because I hate microtransactions.

As Flippy said, it's a "hobby project" in sense. The only thing we pay for is the website, our TS server, some random things, test server (which can also be hosted by one of the developers) and a small license fee here and there. These costs are all split by the developers who want to chip in, some pay a lot, some aren't able to pay anything.

As for, why, it's a portfolio. All the coders, modelers, texture artists, mappers, etc. have ambitions to work in the games industry, they are either studying or already have a good job. So making money off Traction Wars isn't really what they need or want. Why not make a great game for absolutely nothing? It saves us a lot of hassle with licenses at least, we can work on our own pace, etc.

And just to be very very clear about this: Traction Wars will never implement microtransactions. Donations in the future may be an option but no game changing rewards will ever be connected to those. But we still have to go through the legal details of taking donations.

The name should have at least some connection to the game, most people including myself probably originally skipped this because they didn't know it was supposed to be a cool WWII shooter. My first thought when I saw this topic was a game about cars with guns or something, and I didn't bother to check until the topic became popular.

Yes, I'll admit the opinions are divided. I was one of the people insisting on changing the name but the team voted on it and the result was in favour of keeping it. Why? Because a lot of things change about TW, new subject (steampunk > WWII), new engine or platform, etc. And a lot of the fans from the mod days are still with us, a lot of people already knew us as Traction Wars. The consensus was the name was something familiar, something unique.

It doesn't fit but it's different and it's basically our "brand" by now. It's an odd name but it's an odd game as well, in the end it fits.

The same argument could be made about Forgotten Hope, the name is about the German invasions and invincibility during the early months/years of the war. Yet FH2 is mostly about the Allied push into German territory.

It might've been bullshit but that's what they told me. Your story sounds more plausible, though. Still, if it happened it's hilarious.

I loved the comment of the mayor, which makes it all funny. The guy that got wounded was already in a wheelchair so according to the mayor "it doesn't really count that he got wounded, he was already in wheelchair".

Damnit, 2 years? Mount & Blade Bannerlord must come soon to fill up my new games need. (im only anticipating the two)
With M&B's progress it'll be a close race whoever finishes first.

Anyways, this is a pessimistic release date with our current resources. More manpower = quicker release.

I dont drink beer. At all. Where is my poll option?

And years have passed, I still havent learned to drink beer.

"Learned". Some of us refined gentlemen simply don't enjoy this particular kind of beverage.

That being said, I've gotten "used" to beer, mostly through work, and I don't mind drinking Hertog Jan but it's not that I enjoy it or look forward to opening a beer.

I don't know, Turkish, but Erdogan is spewing a lot of bullshit which many Turks seem to take for granted. I haven't met a single Turk that doesn't hate Kurds yet, which is a pretty good achievement from the Turkish government.

Do you mean an independent Kurdistan as a "puppet state built on the blood and bones of many deceased people"? Why would it be a puppet state? Why can't the Kurds have their own country like the Turks?

As for the Armenian Genocide, please, do enlighten me. I've read a lot about it and I understand the reasoning (although I disagree with it), I simply despise the inhumane method.

You have to wonder what percentage of her body is artificial these days. Also, as a fellow Dutchman, Tatjana is also still going strong.

As for Amy above, I'm ok with that.

us yurpeans git hard bout dem kurdis havin land, yerp

All you have witnessed is a few random users on FH's forum supporting an independent Kurdistan and with that limited information you can safely conclude that "Europeans" have a "boner" for this "Kurdistan thingy"?

That's the general impression I am getting from the reddit and here. I have many Kurdish friends who doesn't have a problem being Turkish citizens and speaking Turkish, on the other hand the Europeans are only facing the expatriated whiny Kurds in Europe, which gives them a real real bad impression about what we do here. And our oppression generally goes as far as protecting the teachers and civil servants, building roads and bridges and making sure no warlords pop up to extort the people.

What? Why are we suddenly talking about Turkey? Turkey isn't being torn apart by a civil war or an invading ISIS, that's Syria and Iraq. That's also where the Kurds are fighting a conventional war against their enemies, not  cowardly killing civilians to get their point across.

Yes, the majority of Kurds may very well live under Turkish rule but that doesn't mean Turkey will lose land when an independent Kurdistan rises from the ashes. Probably means they will but, why would the Turks even care? But I forget myself, Turkey has a hard on for having lebensraum.

Stannis shows compromise when he rode North, abandoning his passion for King's Landing.

Varys is another major plot hole, a deemed Targaryen loyalist, yet so adamant to killing the last of the Dragons by "for the realm" excuse at first. He is repeatedly shown trying to pitch the Lion against the Wolf to that Pentosi guy. I think it started to make the TV series seems weaker by days. The season 5 was rather slow and throw in all the climaxes at the end. The finale was so abrupt, unnecessary, and easily predictable.

Nothing beats Season 2 or Season 3. Season 4 was modest, but great. Season 5 is the worst (amongst GoT shows, but overall still a brilliant show) I guess.

The Varys plot hole is solely because in the books he's not what he is in the show and Season 1 is very close to the books. You must remember how adamant he is about killing the girl and that the only thing that saved her is Jorah Mormont, not Varys pretending to kill her.

On hindsight they should've dealt with that in Season 1, but they probably also tried to stick closer to the books in the beginning, that fell apart after Season 2 though. Such a shame because Varys' plan was way cooler than this anti-climatic reveal.

Douchebaggy to attack the Kurds. Absolutely despicable.
PKK / Kurds is like saying Nazi's / Germans to be honest. One is not the other.

I still hope that at the end of this bloody conflict we can see an independent Kurdistan.
There is one, de facto.

And we both know how much that means. Jackshit. Kurds always draw the short straw, Captain.

Wow you europeans have a real boner for this kurdistan thingy.

General Discussion / Re: Conspiracies Thread Mk II

I'd say there is definitely interest towards battle of France within the dev team, however right now theres other priorities (finishing next patch and getting EF sorted) that are blocking any real development of that period of the war.

While it would be an interesting setting with all new army and equipment, plus early war german stuff that we havent really had much of in the past except for early NA maps and Mt.Olympus. I'd see that there's only one thing that would make the whole "front" slightly dull is the fact that its still france, the country we've been fighting in for years now. So while the maps would more or less be historically correct and so on, but you'd still see the same statics that you've seen since first normandy release. That could potentially kill the "feel" of playing something new to some people.

However, I hope that we'll get there eventually. It is an interesting time period with plenty of brutal battles that could be made into maps. Man power is what we require in all forms of development.

I personally hope that's where FH2 ends, exactly where FH started. Even one or two maps of France 1940 would be enough, both as a final 'earliest' theatre and a homage to the roots of FH.

But first the long push to Russia and that other weird country.
