Title: Idea of a map, but so hard to do it.
Post by: Sgt.Collins on 14-11-2011, 14:11:26
Hi evreyone,

I want to create a map of the counter-attack on Foy by the 506th PIR.

I've got some intel:

So it would be my first map and BF2 Editor still crashing when I want to save.

By the way, I've got some questions:

- Is there a free software which allow you to create a map using google maps or any geo data?  ???

- In BF2 Editor, there is no snow in ColorMaps but I've got Bastogne snow types in DetailMaps or something like that.  ???

- I really want to create that map, I've got some really good ideas, but I'm stuck on really stupid things! I'm loosing confidence...   :-[

I'll have some further questions later...

PS: If my english is not really english sometimes, forgive me...

Good to see someone with will to do a map but what would be a purpose of such map? You want to make it just for your self, custom mappack, tournament or what? You're telling us that it will be your first map, wouldn't be better for you to start with something really easy? (I don't want to sound rude, just asking)

If you have problems with editing and editior visit Q&A section:
http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=100.0 (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=100.0)

I also recomend to you to study this:
http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/tutorials/ (http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/tutorials/)

Btw: I dunno if Battle of Foy wasn't contingently spotted on FH2 Test Server what means that this map is already in production and your work is probably going to waste if you wish your map reaching official FH2 standard and make it into release someday in the future...

On the other hand if you just want to give developer a map suggestion you need to search for some more intel, describe your map idea and make a topic about it in the suggestions section

Cheers,
jan_kurator  ;)

PS same with my english!  :P

Hi jan_kurator,

I already done some easy maps, but they are not realistic...

I want to create that map because it's a challenge... It seems so hard, I want to do it!

I didn't know that Foy was in production.

If I can't success, I'll write on Suggestion topic.

Just because a map may or may not be in production does not mean you can't make it. Especially because it is your first map, meaining it will suck anyway (no offense, happens to everyone)

"I already done some easy maps"

It's not his first map. And it's possible to make a good first map anyways.

Hi,

I finally fix BF2 editor. Foy is in progress now, Bois Jacques is finished.

I've got some trouble, it's about the texture...It's my frist snow map, and this is a little bit more complicated with bf_tpaint.

Layer 1> fh snow detail (something like that)
Layer 2> meuse_dirty snow
Layer_3> Bastogne_3

When I use Bf-tpaint and SetLowDetailTexture then Generate Low Detail Texture it gives me some orange snow, and brown other one... I can't get white snow??? How did you do that on Bastogne and Meuse River?

Some pictures of my early work:

I actually just did the t-paint thing with snow.  Hop on the WaW TS3 and I can walk you through it and give you my files.

Copy that, are you available tomorrow evening?

By the way, I've restarted my map (size was too important, and because of the texture)

Now, I've got a white white snow (maybe too white?) and a great forest.

Yeah I got a couple jobs to do but I should be around after 5PM EST.  White snow.....I am guessing you went pure whit with your color....A greyish/blueish tone will balance it out nicely.

Thank you S.Lainer,

But I've changed high.tga, low.tga and steep.tga with HD texture of snow and dirt (for foxholes) from Google and It's beautiful!!

Yes, of course, but I need your help finally...

(http://img4.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_658811BF2Editor2011111601060923.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=658811BF2Editor2011111601060923.jpg)

I love this blue (frozen) snow and a king of brown/white for differents forests.

BUT (there are always BUT), high, low and steep are well when you look at them from far away, but when I get closer, I've gota orange snow. I would like to have the same texture than foxholes (I mean "foxholes" objects).

It starts to annoying me really, really much.

I was looking for Snow Texturing tutorials all night long, and I did'nt find anything...

You got files to help me...What are they?

"I will hunt you up for files" He he, maybe my  TGA's textures... That's all I can give you.

Actually,

- I know how to use Tpaint with my textures.
-I don't know how to make realistic snow textures when you look at the ground ( Detail texture Mod)

Edit: I know now, how to do it, my snow textures were too white again, I'm about to change them!! I understand how it works!

Pics of my new textures (they're maybe too complex..well you'll see):

See? I'm proud of me, I understand how it works, finally!!

I'll have to paint foxholes (of cliff) by myself and it'll be alright.

I saw that a guy made a SNOW_BF2Tpaint,

his link to download it is dead so maybe someone have it and could re-upload it!!

I'm not so proud of my textures in fact...Those are too complex,I want to make the same texture than Bastogne map.

Snow textures are my only problem becuse there is no "snow.dds" in ColorTexture...

Also, I can show you some screenshots of what my map lokks like in the game, and the same points of view in Foy ( the real town):

Ok!

I didn't know that!

This model is include in fh2/staticobject/bulge/foychurch

So if dev's are working on Foy, they'll use it... Even if I noticed some textures problem on the roof...

Please tell me what does it look like...

And, some screens, 4 of the forest south of foy and one showing western farm (the first real "E" company's objective) from Bois Jacques.

First of all: nice project. Keep on working on it very hard.  :)

About the pictures: it's very hard to imagine how it will look at the end.

Try to give screenshots only from ingame, maybe with a quick lightmapping done so the trees look real.

I personally like the forest setting but as the trees don't look right for the moment (that's why quick lightmapping and ingame shot :-) ) it's hard to tell. Try to work on your ground textures and think about to not make it compeltly free.

It shouldn't be a too forced gameplay but still give players a play direction, which usually results as well in places to hide / duck.  :)

Hi Nissi,

Thanks for your comments.

I tried to laucnh a local server to see what does it look like, but BF2 crashed at 44-46%.

Also, at this time, I try to draw fields. To do that, I need fences, I used woodenfence_snow, and farmbarbedwire_fence (north africa!!).But I need a fence made with planks... And those barbed wire fences which can be found on Bastogne next to Bizory.

Last thing, here is the attack plan during the real attack AFAIK.

Do not use africa statics on your bulge map, leads to lag and crashes.

AH.... Ok!

Can I use France stuff?

There is not all objects and building I want in Bulge file. Like I want to make a realistic map with building wich look like real ones, I got to choose some France buildings. I know they maybe won't have snow on teir rooftops.
Title: Re: Idea of a map, but so hard to do it.
Post by: azreal on 19-11-2011, 19:11:31
Yes you can use France statics, since they use the same textures as the Bulge ones.

Ok, thanks...

I got a problem...

I can't test my map in local server. Eveytime I try it, it crashes. (36%/44%/46%)

Topic about map crashes pourcentage says taht I have to delete overgrowth and undergrowth on the secondary terrain, but I don't know what's the secondary terrain.

By the the way, does anybody can explain me where I can find planks fences?
Title: Re: Idea of a map, but so hard to do it.
Post by: Ts4EVER on 19-11-2011, 20:11:27
Secondary terrain is the one that is only there for planes.

The following link is a stick in the fh2 modding area: It shows you some known crash causes of maps, have a look at it and try to eliminate what it could be

http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=14013.0

-------------------------------------

Planked fences: I know there are several vertical plank fences in France/Bulge set. I don't know the name of the static by heart but I can reccomend you in such moments: unzip the level folder of a map where you have seen a static that you can't find. You open the level in the editor and just activate the static there. Then you know the name. :)

All that remains is that you can browse then through your fh2 folder and windows will tell you were your static is hiding.  :D

Maybe this method is too long but I do it usually like this.

------------------------

What I noted was: You work quite close to the map boundary. I would pick a bit a larger map so that one does not get too close to the boundary. Surely it can be worked around with the surrounding terrain but jus make sure that one does not spot the cut between the inbound and outbound area.

Keep on your work, I know how much time it needs.  :)
Title: Re: Idea of a map, but so hard to do it.
Post by: Sgt.Collins on 20-11-2011, 19:11:10
You're right, my map is too little. But I really worked on it, so I don't want to start again.

Planked fences: Ok, thank you, I'll find those.

I already read the topic and it says that I got to delete plants on surrounding terrain. I did it except for Bois Jacques, I don't want to delete overgowth and undergrowth in there. I'm stuck!

Jesus, it's hard to make a good map!!

I also want you to notice that it's my first FH2 map....

Yeah it takes a lot of time and it's hard. Keep on working. :)

Some people say that the first few maps are anyway needed to learn the tools and tricks.

I will use Terragen and 3DEM even if it gives me a weird terrain... Got to manage to do what I want to do with this software.
