F|H Campaign #13 – Scrim #2

Operation Suvurov

By the end of the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, the Wehrmacht had lost all hope of regaining the initiative on the Eastern Front. Losses were considerable and the whole army was less effective than before, as many of its experienced soldiers had fallen during the previous two years of fighting. This left the Wehrmacht capable of only reacting to Soviet moves.

On the Soviet side, Stalin was determined to pursue the liberation of occupied territories from German control, a course of action that had started at the end of 1942 with Operation Uranus, which led to the liberation of Stalingrad. The Battle of the Dnieper was to achieve the liberation of the Ukraine and push the southern part of the front towards the west. However, in order to weaken the German defenses even further, the Smolensk operation was staged simultaneously, in a move that would also draw German reserves north, thereby weakening the German defense on the southern part of the front. Both operations were a part of the same strategic offensive plan, aiming to recover as much Soviet territory from German control as possible

Thirty years later, Marshal Vasilevsky (Chief of the General Staff in 1943) wrote in his memoirs:

This plan, enormous both in regard of its daring and of forces committed to it, was executed through several operations: the Smolensk operation, the Donbass [Operation], the left-bank Ukraine operation.

The first batlle will be TODAY at 19hGMT

F|H Campaign #13 – Battle #1

Breakout from Borisoz

After tenacious fighting, the 52nd Panzer Grenadier Regiment drove the Russians from Borisov and established a bridgehead across the Berezina. The Russians, under direct orders from General Yeremenko, were to crush the bridgehead. The only available forces were an assortment of men and equipment from the local Armoured Forces Training College. At approximately the same time, the 18th Panzer Division was ordered to aggressively expand their bridgehead. These two attacking formations met head-on outside Borisov.

Aftermath: Due to the presence of the Training School, the Russians had more than the usual number of cadre for 1941 and were able to inflict heavy losses on the Germans. The Panzer Grenadiers kept pushing forward despite their losses, however, and with the timely arrival of some much needed air support, succeeded in eliminating the Russian armour. The Germans were able to expand their bridgehead but at a far heavier price than they had expected to pay.

The German invasion of the Soviet Union is about to take place and one key point is Leningrad. The thrust to Leningrad will take place 129 years on the day when the Russians finally defeated Napoleon's forces in the Russian War of 1812. What will YOU do? Will you accomplish what Napolean couldn't and destroy Communism for the Fatherland or will you repeat what your forefathers accomplished and rid the Motherland of the forgien invaders?

The map that will decide battle 1 will be a 4 flag large one. Axis assailt troops will encounter a heavey Russian defence. Kv1, T34 and some lighter Russian vehicles will counter Stuka and light German tanks. The map is a large one, where flanking is easaly possible, wich is in favor of the smarter team. Teamwork, leadership and defence will be the key to win this map.

F|H Campaign #13 – Battle #5

Staritsa

Battle#5: The Dead of Winter, Northwest of Staritsa, December 29th, 1941

The German army was frozen in place. Bitter cold and deep snow made the thinly-clad Wehrmacht dig in and fight first for warmth, then the Russians. The Siberians were well equipped for war in the snow, but the Soviet High Command still threw them piecemeal at the German strongpoints.

The much heralded Soviet winter counter-offensive was in fact a series of small-unit actions amongst the white and evergreen of the Russian winter. The raid on the crossroads northwest of Staritsa was just one of many.

Aftermath: To protect the critical crossroads, the Germans had cut a maze of trenchworks through the snow. If not in comfort, at least in cover, sentries peered into snowy distance. Deep silence. Then, the sound of tank engines. The white, boxy shapes of T-34s with their snowmen-like supporting troops emerged fromt he east heading straight for the crossroads. The Germans were momentarily stunned until their emplaced Panzers took the advancing tanks under fire.

The German infantry ran from one fire position to another. The Siberians advanced in line abreast, some clinging to the sides of the slewing T-34s. Within minutes it was over. The panzers had been destroyed by Russian infantry assault and a number of German troops had died. However, all the attacking T-34s were smoking and there no moving Siberians to be seen. The Germans were to learn that this by no means meant they were all dead. But, the Russians had been thrown back for another day.

F|H Campaign #13 – Battle #6

Piepsk

BBattle 6: No retreat, Southwest of Moscow, January 14th, 1942

TDespite a heavy beating, the Soviet army was still holding the field, and in some areas, giving better than they got. However, the German ranks were thinning out as their manpower resources were called upon time and again to fight just one more battle. Very often, an entire section of the line would be held by occupying the main village in that area with remnants of a battle weary company.

Now, with winter having set in and the Soviets launching their counter-offensive, possession of these small towns became crucial as they were often the only shelter for miles around. Piepsk was one such village garrisoned elements of the 72nd Infantry Regiment. Knowing that the German defenses were sparse, remnants of the Russian 169th Rifle Regiment were set to attack and overwhelm the hardpressed defenders at dawn.

Aftermath: The Russians, despite overwhelming numbers, were unable to gain surprise and the first Russian attack was cut down by accurate long range machinegun fire. Rather than regroup, the Russians committed troops piecemeal throughout the day against the town. The Russians were able to eventually gain a small foothold in the town, but were totally at a loss to support it, and after taking 70casualties, lost heart and faded back into the surrounding countryside.

F|H Campaign #13 – Battle #15

Storm of Steel

Storm of Steel, Near Maloarkhangelsk, Kursk, Russia, 5th July, 1943

The opening of Operation Citadel came as no surprise since both sides had been building up their forces for weeks. The first task facing the German assault was to break through the heavily defended Soviet lines. The Soviet positions, containing six defensive belts, were strong and deep. In front of each belt of strong points were vast mine-fields averaging 5,000 mines per mile of front. The strongholds themselves contained anti-tank guns and ditches, pillboxes and entrenchments. At the road junction of Maloarkhangelsk, the experienced Wurttemburg Regiments of the 216th Division were hurled against the Soviet wall with the objective of cracking these formidable defences. To aid their breakthrough attempt, the Wurttemburgers were reinforced with assault guns and the new Ferdinand tanks, as well as with flamethrowing engineers. In the morning hours of the 5th, the Ferdinands began to rumble forwards in a storm of steel.

Aftermath: In order to blaze a trail for their tanks and infantry, the Germans employed a special vehicle known as the B-IV. Akin to the Bren Carriers, they were driven to the edges of minefields where they would set off a 1,000 pound charge, blowing large gaps through the minefields. The German forces ground forward, the the Soviet infantry, trained for weeks in anti-tank tactics, refused to panic. From their camouflaged foxholes, the Russians allowed the panzers to pass and stopped the German infantry. By evening, the Germans realised that despite their initial success against stubbornly defended positions, there would be no penetration in this defensive zone.

F|H Campaign #13 – Battle #16 (Final Battle)

Operation Citadel

Hill 253.5, 40 miles north of Kursk, July 9th, 1943

Operation Citadel had begun, but instead of the desired lightning breakthough, the fighting had taken on the characteristics of World War I trench warfare. In four days of grueling combat the XLI Panzer Corps had managed to penetrate the defenses of the Soviet 13th Army to a depth of only about five miles. The Corps, now being slowly forced onto the defensive by increasing enemy pressure, needed to secure a strong position on which to anchor its left flank and free its mobile elements;such a spot was the commanding height of Hill 253.5 near the village of Ponyri, where some of the most intensive fighting of the entire Eastern campaign was taking place. One July 9th the Germans stormed and captured Hill 239.8 and to exploit this success an assault on Hill 253.5 was ordered.
