.. a layout like this; it would be a great map

I like Mersa because it is one of the maps that Battlefield is made for. Freedom to attack the town town with tanks, planes and Infantry from any direction and then fighting inside the town. Town is not too close and not too open so tanks and Infantry are both useful. The first phase is interesting because you can never be sure where the enemy is coming from.

Your suggestion would make this map play more like Siege or Fall of Tobruk, PHL, PdH ... and we already have that.

Why always force the player to attack from one direction only (leads mostly to meatgrinder), when he could just drive his tank on the south ridges and kill some defenders ?

It's not, lack of freedom is the reason why I leave server when Falaise pocket starts to load. Lack of freedom is also why Bad company 2 is not as good/fun as Battlefield 2 in means of gameplay.

Pretty much the same, we all agree on top 5 vote results (Anctoville, Mersa Matruh, Op. Aberdeen, Supercharge) with the exception of Tunis for me. I picked Hyacinth out of random. Rarely played it anyways.

However I quite agreed with Bardia, it is too simplistic although fun.
Regarding Op. Luettich, yes i hate it too, because of the layout of what could have been a very big epic map (considering the real battle). It is as bad as Aberdeen (for being unrealistically symmetrical and simplistic)

meh! points in bold:

Most people here hated Mersa Matruh, some hate Op Goodwood, Aberdeen, Cobra and every other maps that tries to represent a city or town with a few blocks of dead buildings. Matruh might be realistic, but the gameplay easily kills it. I get bored waiting in the wrong end with AT guns, only to find out that the Germans flanked from the side. The suckiest thing is moving through the blocks of bland buildings. Now Fall of Tobruk is one brilliant town map, unlike the hated Brest, or Anctoville town maps, we move through a life town.

Lebisey simply don't end up there because they are hardly dead buildings. We are able to fight from building-to-building, so keep this is mind when doing Stalingrad.

Goodwood, Aberdeen, Cobra, Luettich have this common thing I called "pointless towns" Instead of getting epic CQB fights there, you are practically trapped in the narrow streets where buildings around you serve as an explosion pad if the tanks can't find you just by randomly shooting the walls with HE shells. And then in Cobra and Goodwood, the most important town, where all the fun should be, is located way off the heat points (realistic, but meh)

The reason is mostly because of map balance

Anctoville has the same amount of tanks for the germans as allied
Mersa is pretty much a german win
Op aberdeen, well this is where the allies constant win
Supercharge, well The allies dont get enough punch to go trough.

Ticket bleed is another thing why these maps are not so popular.

Before Anctoville was a really good and fun map IMO but after it was "fixed" it went down on my list. Now it's just one more small infantry map, before it had more cool tanks and bigger fighting area.

Mersa
Ramelle
Bardia
Brest
Port en Bessin

The problem with mersa is taht you cant get out of the german base, because of the minefield. you have one way in there and if the 6 pounder camps there you cant get through (i mean that southern spawnpost, east of the airfiled). Its only fun in the stukas. - but as already said, when you have good stuka pilots its a win for germans and allies have no chance.

Ramelle is simply ridicolous with the tigers.

Bardia is boring and if you know how to drive the matilda the Italians are screwed.

Brest is 2/3 win for the allies, if you dont stop them at the market they camp the germans base. and why the hell is there a sherman 76? a regular sherman would fit better.

Port en Bessin ... dont know, i dont like it, especially that you have to grab a faust first and then you can counter the sherman.

generally i can say that i think most NA maps arent fun because of the tank "balance", i seldom play them so i dont even know their name and couldnt vote them xD.

The Italians were screwed when the Allies drove Matildas into Bardia back in the War so, i dont know why you all get annoyed with it D:

Olympos, Totalize and Cobra are too big. It sucks to have to drive/run for  5 minutes just to get killed, time after time. I also choose Goodwood, though right now i dont even really remember that map, i just imagine i thought it were one of the lesser intresting maps. I also chose the last extra answer cause i dont really want any maps to disappear+ making a wrong poll should have results.

Im surprised why so many dislike Bardia, i think its a very cool and varied map.

Perhaps, but too big maps and too much freedom leads to boredom.. Im rather busy than bored when I play a shooter game... also; leaving too much up to the players is a bad idea, better have a focused design (but not too restrict)

This is a sloppy made Matrix I did in 3minutes, but you get the idea: It basically shows how games and maps need to choose which side of the spectrum they want to be...

•   The more focused and (“enforced” if you will), the game mode is, the more emphasis you put on the action that makes you win the game mode. The more open and free we make the game mode, the less emphasis you put on the game mode, and more is left up to the players.

don't agree? make your own matrix if you want: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e285/Natty_Wallo/MATRIX.jpg

Here's my vote  :)

Operation Hyacinth
Tunis
Siege of Giarrabub
Battle of Sfakia
Ramelle Neuville

Operation hyacinth - Forgive me if I sound bitter here, I'm just passionate about FH :) but I'm always dissappointed when I see this loading up. You see,the first time I heard that awesome loading music I started to imagine all the cool sabotage shenanigans I was about to get up to. Like lightning raids in jeeps and chevys on the airfields and crawling on your belly to stab some poor sentry so you can plant that satchel on the train, But it never happens because it's just bloody conquest! And it's always just chaos on this map! The brits can only come from the west so bugger using the jeeps with all that AT camping and I always find the 3 flags in the town a complete and utter bastard to cap it all just makes me want to quit so hyacinth can just bugger off and die! :P

Tunis - This map is just the worst meatgrinder in the mod. If Zap brannigan was ever a commander in the British army this is how he would conduct the assault of Tunis. By sending wave after wave of his own men till their bodies blocked the barrels of the german's guns :P That's how it feels when I play, there's just too much dying involved to capture a flag and it gets very repetative. Also I'd like to add I've very rarely seen brits make it all the way to the german HQ so no I would not miss Tunis if it went.

Siege of Giarrabub - Remember the release video for 2.15? The bit where you see the Aussies assaulting the Fortress with the Italians manning the wall trying to repulse them and then they start to use the grapple hooks to climb over? Well I do because when I saw it with that music playing in the background I thought "FUCK YES! that looks so fucking cool!" But it never plays like that! :'( It's just Italians mingling inside waiting for you to come in and then it just turns into awhackamole game of chase the flag cap garrhhhhh >:( Sorry I think I'm biased against it because I always seem to have the misfortune of joining a server and it's another map that I love, but just as I join it's end of round and the map changes to this..............

Battle Sfakia - This one isn't an awful map it's just personally not my kind of map. When I first saw it loading I had visions of the germans assaulting down the hills and completely crushing the brits. I dunno maybe my personal expectations were too high, but this kind of win is actually very hard to achieve and it's another one of those maps where you can end up flag chasing so for that reason it made my list.

Ramelle Neuville - I struggled to come up with a fifth, so I've opted for this one because I feel this could be a great map but is ruined by one thing. It looks like someone has thrown a bucket of flags at the map, they are just far, far too many. I honestly think it would be a lot better with a lot less flags to attack/defend in the town. Right now it can play a lot like a Normandy Tunis just my 2cents.

Have to show my support for mersa  8) I really like it and I generally prefer the big open maps too. I like maps that have a bit of everything I think that is what battlefield is best at  :)

Bardia - boring, looks like Vanilla, not much fun when playing

Lebisey - it looks great and has everything you need, but I still don't feel good when playing it, the gameplay is just weird  somehow

Operation Aberdeen - seriously, what's the purpose of this desert with some house thrown into the middle? Balance is screwed, no cover at all and it looks ugly

Operation Hyacinth - imo it's a nice map since it's a night map, but I never really get play it, so I wouldn't miss it

Mount Olympus - Looks good, but gameplay gets boring after 5 minutes, I just can't make any kills on this map so it could go imo

Oh and about freedom and stuff, that's what I always liked about FH2, you could choose from which direction you attack. The linear and "planned" gameplay always disturbed me, you feel like being forced to act in a specific way. Africa maps get extra points for the freedom in them. :)

Voted for:

- Mersa Matruh (5x)
- Operation Aberdeen
- Gazala
- Alam Halfa
- Supercharge

Thus these got luckily away:

- Siege of Tobruk
- Unreal Tunisment
- Mareth Line
- Invasion of Crete
- Mount Olympus

Basically all those maps with either lack of cover or horribly long walking distances. Or both. Not to forget: they just play badly.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom
